First of all, I voted for Captain Toad.

Second of all, there's no double standards at play at all. The rule is, we say, "Can I play this?" and if they say yes and let us play it, it's eligible. If they say no, it's not eligible. I was able to play Bloodborne, I was not able to play Xenoblade. Pretty straightforward. Reasonable people can disagree on the merits of that rule, but it's applied universally.

The 29 judging publications for the 2014 Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 are proud to announce this year's nominees, comprised of 47 products on display at E3 2014. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, July 1.

Looks like Evolve is going to clean up once again.
Multiplayer-only games are the way to go to get to the Western media's hearts.
Which multiplayer-only game shall take home the prize in 2015? How long until we see Titanfall 2?

Also, Electronic Arts is the greatest sports gaming publisher of all time. Just ask the journalists they pay to play their games. They'll tell you how great they are.

no platformer category ?

is Evolve this year's Titanfall?

I don't want to say it, but it seems like Evolve is the next "media darling" much like Titanfall was. I'm not going to say whether the game is deserving of it or not, but seeing the media hype train spinning up for it is a little disconcerting.

Was Arkham Knight that strong of a showing?

I loved Asylum, have mixed feelings of City and origins....

Knight looks beautiful, but all we saw was the batmobile acting like a tank.

Also, surprised by middle earth.

Evolve is gonna end up exactly like Titanfall, a multiplayer shooter that wins all the awards that is most likely very fun and ends up not having a lot of longevity and people don't bother after a week.

It sounds like a solid game, people at PAX says it plays like a solid game. However evolve only won Game informers best of E3.

Rainbow Six is the one thats winning everywhere.

Also, I think these are fair since now critics are actually voting for games they actually played, rather than what they saw someone else play.

Seems pretty evenly split between Destiny and Evolve.

Although I'm not surprised to see how well Evolve has been received. It's a new game from the guys behind the magnificent Left 4 Dead...

Shadow of Mordor getting some love, excellent. Strangely coming out of a post-E3 catch up on all the live demos, Far Cry 4 has miraculously risen to my most anticipated of 2014.

I really hate how they do these things. If a game shows up in the "Best of Show" category, then it only makes sense that either it or another game that showed up in that category should win in whatever other category they're in, i.e.: It doesn't make sense for Destiny, Splatoon, or Sunset Overdrive to win in the "Best Original Game" category as Evolve and No Man's Sky are in that same category and are in "Best of Show". Unless they're saying that the winning game in the "Best Original Game" category is the most original game. Though in that case, they're then also going to be saying that the "Best Action Game" is the game that has the most action... ? And "Best Console Game" having games that appear on PC and "Best PC Game" having games that appear on consoles is also kinda annoying.

EDIT: What I'm basically saying is here's hoping Shadow of Mordor wins so I can further have hope for it.

Game critics judging trailers/non-gameplay? I guess you can call yourself anything in this medium. I hope no one's claimed the title of videogame pope.

Original game means "Best new IP".

No Zelda U? Or do they not nominate early game teasers?
edit: looks like unplayable games are not qualified.

Come on, might as well call it "Best shooter bang bang game" Bayonetta should be in this list.

Oh so this is the judge's week thing that happened right?

Don't think Evolve would be so well received across the board.

Is this judges week stuff? If so, any big announcements that came later (like at the conferences) will be missing.

4 out of 5 games in the Best Original Game category are shooters.

sigh
Still an original game in the eyes of Western media if the tried-and-true shooting mechanics are wrapped up in a new franchise package.
Why would we not want to shoot stuff? Isn't that what gaming's all about?

Wait, Bloodborne was playable to certain people??

I thought it was shown hands-off only?

*hype/hope for early 2015 increases*

Is Evolve that good? I'm not feeling it like I did Titanfall.

Many people that saw it on the show floor liked it, but I take issue with multiplayer games being shown in the even more controlled environment that I think "judge's week" is. It's pretty easy to create a fun environment in such an intimate setting (that's how I imagine it at least) if your game is any good. That's an extra step removed from the average actual player experience.
