Strange thing about Edge Of Nowhere.I usually abhor sneaking, in games, and will take the guns blazing route every time. In VR ,and Edge Of Nowhere I'm captivated by it. weird.

If anybody is interested in a visually stunning game with some simple yet decent gameplay, I recommend Polynomial 2. It's all space, shapes and lights, and you can import your own music into it. It's in early access, have only played about 30 minutes but it was worth it to me for around 10 bucks. And of course if you don't like it you can always refund on Steam.

So now that all the excitement of launch has died down.. is the oculus worth it? Thinking about snagging one soon, but not really sure if there are games to support it.

To the poster above, I pondered this also but I've no will power so just ordered! Should be here next week!

What are the best sites and YouTube channels that focus on OR and VR in general?

Also, what are the unmissable games?

honestly, nope. I've had one now for close to 3? months and have played maybe 10 hours total, I'd rather play 1 hour of Overwatch or Battlefront than 15 minutes inside my Oculus. Its fun as a short experience, but not a single game so far has made me glad I bought it.

I'm also the kind of guy who is totally sold on something just based on a single thing. I am 100% glad i bought a PS4 because I got to play The Last of Us on it, if I never buy another game on PS4 I'd have zero regrets. Forza Horizon 2 made my xbox one worth it.

So far nothing like that on oculus. Elite Dangerous is fun and watching porn in VR is cool but neither are enough to make me think the purchase has been worth it so far.

It's totally worth it (assuming you've got the expendable income for it). I've been spending hours every day in the last week playing Elite Dangerous with the Rift, and it's a transcending experience. It's not something that replaces traditional gaming on a screen, as the poster above me seems to expect it to be, but something that you do in addition to it. Since I got the Rift a few months ago, I've been using it off and on. Some times I've been playing nothing but traditional gaming on my monitor, and other times I don't do anything but VR on my computer. It's all about what you're in the mood for, and there's just nothing else that can provide an experience like VR can right now.

I think it depends on the kind of games you can get into. Elite Dangerous has me hooked right now and I can't imagine playing it without VR.

My friend who put hundreds of hours into it is hooked on it as well all over again due to VR and says the same about the immersion.

My game time is limited, but I've barely played anyhing non-VR since getting mine. I'm currently working on a wheel/cockpit like setup for racing.

Worth it. My kids can't get enough. I have been slowly moving through my library for a month now. Every experience is completely different so far. Stand outs to me are, VR time machine, The Climb, Edge of Nowhere, and all the freebie experiences are absolutely worth checking out.

I also spend way too much time in EveVR, and Gun Jack.

Everyone should at least try it out imo.

Find someone local who has one or best buy trial/whatever, it's up to the individual. I did the KS for DK1, bought a DK2, and got a free CV, I play Project Cars regularly in CV1 and it's brilliant, my favourite is Euro Truck Sim or American Truck Sim, however I have such a steam backlog that I need to mix my time. It's a large outlay on something you may not like or have much gaming time vs backlog, so try before you buy.

It also depends on your hardware, I'm using a 980Ti and very old Xeon 5650, both OC'd to max and I get great performance but YMMV.

Silly question... I have a g sync monitor plugged in via the display port.. when my Rift arrives do I keep this in and just plug the Rift into my HDMI port on back of PC?

What do people that have HDMI monitors do?

I'm going to try that too.

I read on reddit that's the best way to go

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

I don't think I've played a "flat" game since I got my Rift except for a couple of hours of SWTOR when the last story patch came out if that tells you anything.

Thanks for the responses y'all. Going to go to a near by best buy and test it out for myself! Also going to be a child and ask for it for my birthday

Tested. Works perfectly.

Oh man. It took me all night to set everything up... but it's real guys. This shit is real.

Oh man.

And lucky's tale seems pretty fun. I'm a suckered for 3D platformers though

Great news thanks, mine arrives on Monday! Why did it take so long?

What other games have you tried?

Excited!!

Good luck! It's definitely for people who want to be on the bleeding edge and experience the evolution as it's happening. It's not really at the place where it is strong enough to thrive in and of itself. PC ethics aside, Oculus is funding or helping to fund a ton of games which is laying the bedrock that's needed.

I stopped trying to interest people in VR. It's such a new experience. It's like living in 1920's and trying to explain someone the television experience. I had this little box and miniature people came out and performed in it. "you mean like a puppet show!" "I dont think i'd like that". blah blah.

VR has been the first consumer product in a long time that's given me satisfaction, as in I have nothing else going on, I'm really happy to go home and use it. The experiences are so broad the only thing comparative would be, imagine you own your own amusement park, that's always sitting there waiting for you to ride any ride. Some of them suck and I never ride, some of them are medium fun, a handful are flatout amazing..That's as close to a sensation I can relate to it. The closest product I can recall providing that, in the past, would be my first PC back in the mid- 80's.

My first impression.

Keep in mind, it was around 11 PM last night when I finally got my system all set up.

1 - Installation is surprisingly easy. I was expecting this to be a pain in the ass. It's not. I think it was harder setting up my Wii for the first time than it was setting this up. The instructions are very clear and elegant. Good work Oculus.

2 - VR is real. You really do disappear into the world. The effect is instantaneous. This is going to be dangerous. People who are already anti-social WILL disappear from this world.

3 - The only game I own right now is Lucky's Tale. I'm planning on getting Edge of Nowhere soon too. For me, the "wow" moment was the first time I had Lucky move towards me (I was going to say the screen... but that isn't exacty the right way of putting it. As the camera moved backwards, I felt like I was actually sliding. It was concerning at first. I had to talk myself out of it.

Cons:

1- Still trying to find the proper adjustment. I wear glasses. It can become kind of blurry if it's not situated right. Maybe I should look into contacts lololol

2 - I played with this for about an hour last night. After I was done, I removed the head set and felt slightly disoriented. Not nauseous or anything. But it's weird going from a hyper stylized world back to a real world. Has anyone else experienced this?

As fate would have it, today I'm leaving on a three day camping trip with my parents and nephew. Going to be a long. LONG weekend.

But I'm going to try to get in a good hour or so of VR before that happens.

:)

Thanks for the first impressions, sounds great. I will share mine when it arrives next week. I already have Project Cars so I am excited to try it, even if it's only with a gamepad.

Yes, this is normal. I normally experience about 5-15 minutes of feeling slightly "off" after using the Rift, but there's nothing problematic about it, and I hardly even think about it anymore. It's not the same thing as VR sickness.

I think the Rift will be my first VR device. Anything I should know? Like accessories, versions of the Rift, and whatnot? OT seems pretty comprehensive, but just making sure nothing has changed.

I looked at the Vive and it looked a bit more complex to set up, so I think the Rift looks like a good starting point to try VR out for real.

Just make sure your PC is up to the task. Otherwise it's pretty much plug and play. Glasses suck with it and the VR Lens lab inserts are OK.

Other than the PC to spec (including a couple free USB3 ports), just follow the instructions in the box and download a bunch of demos, start with Dreamdeck, stationary experiences and then sample the more intense stuff. See what games on Steam you may have that have VR options before buying any of the intense stuff on Home, but I prefer to buy, launch, and play from Oculus Home over Steam. Just preference though.

There are few games like Blazerush, Lucky's Tale, and Chronos that are great. Elite Dangerous if that's your thing.

Above all, keep your expectations in check, don't expect too much and you'll have a paradigm shift in your opinion of gaming, but expect "Sci fi level" VR like the Matrix and you'll be a bit let down.

The wait is killing me! On the UPS site it says I will get it Monday, but the Rift is actually in my local depot now!

Do you think they will send it out today or keep to the date they have advised? Tempted to call them and see if I can collect it as I don't fancy sitting in all day just in case they happen to send it.

I'm like a kid at Christmas and I am a 35 year old grown man!

you could get them to "hold the package" and if the depot is open on saturday you may be able to pick it up. but i wouldn't risk it, as UPS customer service is all automated and it could screw things up. safer just to wait til monday

Yep, I've had mine for a few months, and am.glaf I have it. I've had a lot of fun with some games but I am itching to get touch.

It's pretty easy to setup.

You will see SDE but when you're involved in a game your brain doesn't care.

Any racing game with a wheel is really good for immersion.

Had two Rift experiences on the opposite ends of pleasantness.

Do not play The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter VR. I played a whole bunch of VR today and this was the one to give me VR motion sickness for the first time ever.

My Rift now reaches my bed. I used Virtual Desktop to set my desktop essentially at the ceiling above my bed. It was a fantastic little experience. I used the recent Giant Bomb mailbag video as a test and it went great, especially because I've also got a Logitech DiNovo Mini.

Thanks for this! Is Oculus better than PSVR (if you've tried it)? I tried PSVR at Best Buy and it was awesome, so if it's just as good as that, then I'll be content.

My computer should be able to handle it -- I'm in the process of getting a new one with a Z170a mobo, 6700k, and a 1080 so the power should be good but I can't run that test on Oculus' website as the computer isn't here yet.

The Oculus Rift is a more expensive and higher quality headset from all accounts. The PSVR does have some advantages, such as superior comfort when wearing it, but the quality of the experience itself should be far superior on the Rift (and the Vive, for that matter), at least as long as you've got a decent PC.

Is the Rift uncomfortable to wear, or is it just not as comfortable as PSVR? One of the things I did notice was just how comfortable the headset was.

And I'm about to buy it, so is this it and not one of the earlier versions? There only seems to be one version, but I heard Amazon was out of stock so I want to make sure I'm buying the most recent one -- the one available at Best Buy and Oculus:

I am assuming it is possible to play my emulators via the Rift, what is the best way? Is it a good experience?

Launching the emu via Virtual Desktop?

I mean for like SNES, Genesis, etc

Yeah, that's your best option right now. It's not a bad experience but I prefer using a standard monitor due to gsync unless I'm emulating some multi screen Taito thing.

From what I understand, the Rift is less comfortable than the PSVR.

I do not find the Rift to be the most comfortable thing being honest.

I found it reasonably comfortable til my air conditioner broke. Then I just started sweating into the foam and it became a mess.

From what I've gathered in regard to comfort based on feedback I've read is:

PSVR > Rift > Vive

I find the rift comfortable for long Elite Dangerous sessions. You just need to ensure you adjust the side and top straps accordingly.

There is only one commercially available version of the Oculus Rift (often called the CV or CV1 by those of us who've been following the Rift for a while), but if you're buying from third-party sellers, you just have to make sure you're not buying the DK1 (veeeery unlikely at this point) or the DK2.

This is the DK2. You don't want to buy this one.The one you linked to is the correct one.

It's fairly comfortable but by no means weightless. It also gets kinda hot after a while. I usually play it in 30 minute periods. Any more than that and it does start to feel uncomfortable to me. A good enough game would probably let me ignore that though, haha. I also haven't tried the other headsets so I can't really compare.
