Rockstar/Take2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City’ remains at No3 thanks to the release last week of PS3/PC versions (-31%) and Nintendo climb one place to No4 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-3%). This week’s big new entry at No5 is Capcom’s internally developed ‘Monster Hunter Tri’ on Wii, the most successful version of this franchise so far in terms of launch sales / position on the All Formats Chart. ‘Monster Hunter’ was first seen in the UK on PS2 in May 2005 and this was followed by 3 PSP versions (Monster Hunter Freedom, 2006 / Freedom 2, 2007 / Freedom Unite, 2009). The only other new entry this week is Namco Bandai’s ‘Dead to Rights: Retribution’ at No22, developed by UK studio Volatile Games (a division of Blitz Games). This is a first next gen outing for the franchise - ‘Dead to Rights’ was first seen in 2003 on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and PC (developed by Namco).

I don't know what to think about MH3 but to not seeing it bomb completely, as being said by one poster above, is already something satisfying.

Good going for Tri - it got solid advertising and promotion and it seems to have paid off. Hopefully it will stick around for a bit.

Now to see how it performs in the US...

I'm still surprised at the Monster Hunter success, then again NoE spend a shitload of marketing money to promote the game.

@ everyone surprised at the sales of MH:Tri wait until next week it will make a big drop.
Why you ask, because A lot of EU foks from the mainland import games from the UK, a lot of wii titles are first way to expensive in there own country or 2 not put up on shelfs at all.
Next week all the importers are done and you will see a big drop I'm afraid.

Well, without wanting to discount that entirely out of hand, why should this particularly affect Tri and not any of the other third party Wii titles that have come out?

I wouldn't be as pessimistic as you, The Dutch Slayer, but I wouldn't be surprised if sales are heavily frontloaded on this one. Still, not too bad for an MH game.

I wonder how well it will do in Wii-heavy countries such as France and the Netherlands, as well as Germany where it seems Monster Hunter has seen more success lately with the portable releases.

There is a shit load of TV adverts for MH Tri in the UK, have been for a few weeks. Tempted to get it myself

Who knew Ninty/Cappy wanted to push MH3 so badly. I wonder if MH3 will do significantly better in the west (500K? between NA & Europe?)

I hope I'm wayyyy off and that this game does have lags and sells big in the EU but looking at the 3rd party software sells in the EU since launch only mario and sonic at the Olympics have done extremely well for itself on the wii.

Kinda nice for MH3. Not that I think 5th place means it sold particularly well, considering the games ahead of it were already out and had decent drops, but it's probably better than expected.

Why is everyone so surprised at MH Tri? I'm surprised it didn't chart higher.

It's had the biggest 'core' game marketing TV campaign I've seen in ages. Every other advert break, another Wii advert for MH Tri.

Well, we don't know Capcom and Nintendo's sales expectations. Not to say they're low, but I'm sure that despite the marketing push they don't necessarily expect it to become anywhere near as huge as it is in Japan. Plus it's a bit unfair to compare it to M&S. Not only is it the best-selling third-party title on the Wii, but it's also SEGA's best-selling title ever, so expecting, or even hoping MH3 will sell even half of that is a bit unreasonable. At least I'd like to think Nintendo and Capcom aren't that unreasonable given the sales of the previous installments here in Europe. Still, it would be could if it did well. The nice side effect would be that "third parties can't sell on the Wii" whiners would shut up for once :p.

Monster Hunter's 5th place is sure pretty good for such a niche game.. But considering the amount of effort put into advertising it.. I don't know, maybe I expected it to chart a little higher.
But then it's a relatively new series for the mainstream audience and it's on the Wii, so I guess it could have some decent legs.
Anyways, I still don't understand why Nintendo decided to put under its wing this game, it's not that it was ever going to sell a shitload of copies to a Western audience.

I rarely seen ads for games (im in Australia) but i've seen a bunch for MH and they are quite long.

It's a pretty good ad but the way they say 'tri' instead of 3 really irks me. I know thats what it is but it just sounds stupid.

This might sound stupid and i am not asking for a port but i get the feeling that if they want to make MH a big franchise in the west than it would be better off on the HD consoles.

For the same reason they want to push DQIX: given the domestic success of both games, they probably think there's something about them that could make them mildly successful here. More cynically, it also acts as a token third-party game to show that Nintendo isn't completely hostile/indifferent towards third-parties and traditional/hardcore games. Should MH become successful enough, it would help solidify it as a Nintendo game, and would thus encourage Capcom to put the following installments on Nintendo consoles.

Still, despite Nintendo's involvement, I don't think they expect it to become a phenomenon just yet. Why? I don't know :lol.

That's the point, they could have chosen a more suitable game for this purpose, a shooter or even a more distinguishing game such as SH Shattered Memories (it worked for Heavy Rain after all), something that could appeal to Western people.
MH just seems "too Japanese" to me, the artsyile, the control scheme, everything.

I'd imagine it's more likely that part of the deal for securing games like Monster Hunter Tri or Samurai Warriors 3 in Japan was that Nintendo would put their muscle behind promotion in the West.

If Nintendo can make Monster Hunter big on the Wii worldwide, they'll secure future installments for Wii / 3DS etc.

Whatever happens, at least we've found the winning formula for third party success on the Wii: Let Nintendo publish your games.

Definitely. Because they actually bother to put some effort into marketing Wii games.

Given its mind blowing success on the PSP in Japan? I don't know:/

That would explain it I guess.

Franchise milking here we come?:D
I don't know if further splitting the fan base and releasing more games on more platforms would a wise idea...

Well done Splinter Cell, very enjoayable game

Also the obligatory look at the legs on Forza 3. :D

Also very happy to see GTA in there a big nana to the idiots who says no one plays it anymore.

Non-extrapolated Weekly Averages (Based on Monthly Top 10s)
Code:
| Title | Jan 2010 | Feb 2010 | Mar 2010 |
------------------------------------------------------
| Wii Fit Plus | 27,750 | 16,500 | 18,600 |
| Wii Sports Resort | 22,500 | 18,250 | 16,800 |
March 2010 is from week 9-13, while April 2010 is from week 14-17.
Wii Fit Plus sales dropped in week 14 (-8%) and week 16 (-3%).

So ~16-17k for MHTri.

I find it *very* amusing that Heavy Rain keeps on trucking. Especially considering the fact that many drama queens were bitching about how that game won't sell at all.

I'm curious about Monster Hunter future, like 3DS version, MH3G plataform, and eventually MH4. I just hope it sells well on the Wii, it fucking deserves.
