PAL Charts - Week 47

This is a pal charts thread though.

you mean UK thread? :D
Because thats only place it is left... right?

In Ireland, Denmark, Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Finland, LBP has had better sales and better legs than Wii Music... in most of those countries, Wii Music did not chart at all, and if it charted, it dropped off right away.

So only where it increased sales was in UK (from 11th to 8th?) and only where it started good was Australia (2nd place)...

It is very definition of sucess.

There are a lot of ridiculous riffs I've seen in internet forums, but I don't think it's been quite some time since I saw one as absurd as the LBP/Wii Music one.

The obvious delight both parties are taking in the suffering of their "enemy" is bizarre. The only defense of this behavior I've seen is that "the other side" had adopted sarcistic mannerisms, so they're simply returning the favor. Which is a nicer way of putting that old puerile adage: "He started it."

p.s. LBP pack launched in many countries, and in some - like France, it is actuall packaged product inside PS3 as an bundle, and it wont counted under these charts. In other countries like Germany and UK, they give out copy of LBP together with standard PS3 as "pack" and in that case they are counted in charts.

Didn't MS say they lead in Germany? And are crushing throughout Europe.

Quite a lot of love actually... 1st on launch, then 5th, but obviously gone now. The first two weeks were its best performance in any country (in terms of charts).

Bundled games should never be a part of unit sales like this. My guess is I know why MS has the highest attachment rate in the industry as well. If bundled games = games sold like this, that will be included in the high MS attachment rate. It seems like you can't buy a 360 without starting out with at least 2 games. Heck, 5 games for the Arcade and Core. ;)

Great looking week for the 360 though regardless. Not bad for the PS3 at all either.

gtj1092 said:
So people bought a console with no games?
1 week of increased hardware sales is only a small piece of a much larger pie.

Isn't the 360 bundled with several of its best games in Germany? There's also the small problem of Gears 2 being completely banned there.
WTF? That shit ain't cool.

Found it and it was over three weeks ago. Surely people don't buy a console and sit on it without buying games for so long especially since they manage to purchase them for a console as expensive as a Ps3 is in Europe. If MS would of said they were outselling them for the past couple weeks I could understand the lack of 360 software in the chart but if 360 is really ahead LTD the german chart really doesn't make sense.

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
Can't really turn the TV on without getting caught by the LBP "my own level-fiancee" and "my own level-fido" ads (the latter is hilariuos!) or the longer version with the bundle mentioned at the end (€399 for a PS3+LBP).

On the other end, I've never even seen ONE WiiMusic ad, though there are demo spots over few electronics-centered malls (MediaWorld and Euronics)... and I did catch a little kid happily playing the thing, folks shopping around didn't seem interested in the slightest though.

I wanted to have a go at it, didn't try the "game" yet, but I have to admit I was to embarassed to do it in public -_-

Btw, talkin' about Italy.

Was there ever an better example on how useless the charts positions are?

There is 1 PSP unit in fucking Top 30, yet PSP software sales are only 20% less than Wii and PS3 thta are chart leaders.

Not swinging this anyway, just saying that hard number are da shit, and everything else is wishful thinking.

They said hardware sales more then the PS3 in Germany, that doesn't mean software sales will show it straight away.

They just said sales, so that the press thinks they were referring to total sales, but it was obviously meant monthly sales (for the month directly after the price cut). Just public relations. In the german software charts the ps3 was alway stronger than the 360. Even when the total installbase of the 360 was bigger than the ps3's. When DMC4 was released, the normal and the collectors edition charted both higher than the normal 360 version. At that point both consoles had a compareble install base.

But with the recent price cut that may change, a lot of people buy a 360 now, even if they would like to have a ps3 more, but it's that huge price difference. The first MS price cut this year had nearly no impact here.

Those Swiss numbers give an interesting sense of scale... their 2008 YTD figures are about 2-3 weeks worth of sales in Japan.

Thanks for the info. :)

No they meant LTD. See my post of above. There was a press release to trumpet them passing Ps3 in Germany.

i live in northern italy and i've been to switzerland recently, looking at prices of videogames and consoles no wonder why they're selling so few of them (i think a not discounted videogame was selling for something like 70/80 euros). even if switz is a rather rich country i think those are really high prices.

That was an interview and quickly translated from German no less. All we have is "overtaken the PS3", it could mean overtaken in sales, LTD, YTD... or any number of PR crap options. :lol

It could possibly be LTD though... because the last stats we had (Up to Jan 2008) were:

Wii - 728,000
360 - 384,000
PS3 - 308,000

There may be more recent, but I haven't seen a post on them.

Switzerland is a rich country, yes, BUT I live now in Sweden, a country said to be less rich, and I remark everyday that Swedes have a higher purchase power. And by quite a margin.

And a videogame for 80 euros ? 120 CHF ? WTF ???

Yes there was no hardware data for Germany since Januar 2007.

But in may Reeves claimed that the ps3 would overtake the 360 in europe till the end of this year, which didn't/won't happen, but he mentioned several countries where this has been the case. Germany was one of them. To overtake them they would need to sell about 20k more in a month. Pricecut was 5 month later, so the ps3 should have a 100k advantage until the second price cut. And you don't sell 100k 360s in just a month and turn the game.

There were certain rumors in may about the actual numbers which said that the ps3 is at 550.00-580.000 and the 360 under 500k.

But well it could be... but if you check all press releases and informations you won't find information where they explicitly say it. Which means it is not the case.

MS is finally doing good and that's deserved.

We can be exact if you like!

2008 YTD - Hardware Units vs 11/10 - 11/16 in Japan:

NDS: 103,902 (1.17 x 1 week sales)
Wii: 62,549 (2.34 x 1 week sales)
PS3: 50,980 (2.92 x 1 week sales)
PSP: 46,435 (1.22 x 1 week sales)
PS2: 20,854 (3.85 x 1 week sales)
360: 19,075 (2.39 x 1 week sales)

NDS combines DSi / DS in Japan in this example.

Population:
Japan: 127.4m
Switzerland: 7.6m

It still doesn't really change what I was talking about in terms of scale because obviously scale involves the country sizes. :p

New games (Wii, PS3, X360) here usually go for 80~100 CHF, discounted and used games go for 30~80 CHF (at least in the German speaking part).

Yeah, we're tiny.

Chart positions won't matter in the slightest when it comes to really small markets like Switzerland. Larger markets will show a big advantage for games charting in the top 10 consistently.

I'm just wondering if these charts are any solidifying proof that people in Europe tend to play more wii games as its pick up and play and they have more lesiure time. Whereas people like myself from the UK like to play more of a mixture and thats why you tend to see more different games in the top 10 or even the top 40.

not really, what do you based your data on? If we check Italian numbers, where we have concrete data, difference between #1/#2 and #10 is Huge... and difference between 8-15 is minimal... Same goes with Japanese data as well. Top 2-3 games sell 3x-4x if not more from 10th game. There is no huge difference between 6th and 16th game (depends on the week of course).

Didnt we have japanese montly data per platform info which was very similar to what we saw in Swiss?

I think only conclusion when it comes to sales data is that without hard numbers, its all bullshit.
