PAX East 2014 Thread | April 11-13, 2014 | It's Finally Spring

RV2jyy2.jpg

PAX East Official Site

PAX East 2014 marks the fifth year of the Penny Arcade eXpo on the East Coast in Boston, MA. This year also marks 10 years of PAX, with the first PAX Prime being held in 2004.

The important questions:
When? April 11 - April 13, 2014

Show Hours: (Different from last year!)
Friday: 10AM - 12AM
Saturday: 10AM - 12AM
Sunday: 10AM - 7PM

Expo Hall Hours:
Friday: 10AM - 6PM
Saturday: 10AM - 6PM
Sunday: 10AM - 6PM

Where? Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, 415 Summer St, Boston, MA 02210

(clickable)

How do I get there?
The closest public transit station is the World Trade Center Silver Line station. You can also walk down Summer St. from South Station.

Can I still get a badge?
PAX Badges sell like hotcakes :( You're going to have to get yours secondhand. Inevitably some gaffers will have extra passes so keep an eye on the thread.

What are the panels gonna be?
Here's a schedule of all of the panels: http://east.paxsite.com/schedule

What companies are gonna be there?
The exhibitor list is TBA when there's a official link; however there's a list in Guidebook right now.

Any Twitter handles I should follow?
http://twitter.com/Official_PAX
http://twitter.com/PAX_lines

Is there way I can get all this info on my phone?
Download Guidebook! http://guidebook.com/ - keep track of all the panels you want to go to on your phone, and whatever other convention minigames there will be. Maps of the convention center included!

Anything else about PAX I should keep in mind?
  • The BCEC runs shuttles into Chinatown and South Boston during lunch hours; personally I think it's a much better option than eating the food in the convention center.
  • Don't settle for ridiculously long lines unless you're really really really sure you want to play that game
  • Indie Megabooth is STACKED this year.
  • I'll probably add more to this when I can think of things
  • Have fun!

Is there a GAF meetup?
You betcha. This year's meetup is at The Whiskey Priest, 150 Northern Ave, Boston, MA 02210 at Friday 7PM. Here's a quick and easy and clickable map for you:

Come a little early, come late, bring friends, just have a good time. One thing though, bring identification. You will get carded. Welcome to Boston. If somehow we can't get in, keep checking the thread for updates or PM me for info. We got late night public transit on the weekends for at least a year now in Boston, so drink up!

But I can't do Friday :(
Just in luck! There will be a second meetup! Details forthcoming.

What if I don't want to drink with Gaffers?
Well if you want to be one of those people... here's a Google Map with a list of PAX parties. I didn't make it so I don't know how complete it is.

So who from GAF is coming?
Here's a list thanks to Jipan. The list is in no way exhaustive.

----

Keep in mind, there will be bag checks

PAX ‏@Official_PAX Apr 3
For those wondering, yes, the bag checks are for safety and security. The building is requiring it, as they have the right to do so.

PAX ‏@Official_PAX Apr 3
And yes, the check is for weapons and dangerous goods only. We don't care about food, etc.

PAX ‏@Official_PAX Apr 6
@LiamMurph18 8 AM is when we let people start lining up inside. If you want to avoid the huge crowds, just show at 11a - noon

MBTA news and notes

Update: Reminder: April 5-6, 12-13, 26-27: Shuttle buses replacing Red Line service between Harvard Square and Alewife Stations from start to end of service.

Due to the Floating Slab Project, buses will replace Red Line trains between Harvard Square and Alewife Stations in both directions from start to end of service during the following weekends:

- Saturday, April 5, through Sunday, April 6
- Saturday, April 12, through Sunday, April 13
- Saturday, April 26, through Sunday, April 27

Regular Red Line train service will resume at the start of service the following Monday. All shuttle bus stops are accessible for persons with disabilities.

Shuttling the following stops:
Alewife Station
Davis Station
Porter Square Station
Harvard Square Station

Beginning March 22, 2014, Government Center Station will be closed for two years while crews work to reconstruct the station into a fully accessible, safer, modern, more comfortable facility.

How Will This Affect My Commute?
During the station closure beginning on March 22, 2014, both Blue and Green Line trains will pass through Government Center Station but will not stop there.

For customers who desire to travel outside the system or use Hubway during the months when Hubway is in operation, the distance between State and Downtown Crossing as well as State and Park Street is minimal. It should be noted, however, that customers who exit and re-enter the system will be charged again if they do not have an unlimited weekly or monthly pass.

During Government Center's closure, Green Line trains will pass through Government Center Station but not stop there. The last downtown stop will generally be the following for each branch:

• B-Branch (Boston College) will end at Park Street
• C-Branch (Cleveland Circle) will end at North Station
• D-Branch (Riverside) will end at Park Street during rush hours and North Station at other times
• E-Branch will end at Lechmere

Additionally, Bowdoin Station will extend its operating hours and be open during all hours of service for the duration of Government Center's closure.

I'll keep updating until the day of; tell me if I missed anything or if I should highlight anything

Great job ActStriker!

Worth noting that if you absolutely positively don't want to wait, or the shuttle lines are too long, Chinatown isn't that far a walk from the BCEC, and there's a TON of decent places to eat in the area.

It's so much more relaxing having gone every year prior. I don't care about swag anymore. I don't wait in line for 2 hours just to make sure I can get into a talk, i don't get there at 8AM Friday so I can half walk/half run to a specific booth. It's really a lot more enjoyable experience without any stress of making sure you're at a certain place at a certain time.

Except the Bombcast. I line up for that shit 3 hours in advance.

so will the facebook oculus rift still be there to try?
also still bummed no mario kart 8 or Nintendo/ Sony booths

but still, lets do this B^)

They'll have a booth. I assume they're be there to try, but I highly suggest that you bring disinfectant wipes. Apparently, there was an outbreak of pink-eye at Prime due to the Oculus Rift.

Finally grabbed Guidebook and hoooooooooly shit at that Indie Megabooth.

I saw on the expo hall floor map they put Riot next to the escalators in the open again, right next to PAX Merch booth. Gonna be crowded over there.

Riot, Merch, Microsoft, Ubisoft, and NVidia. You're not kidding.

I have a ticket to that Harmonix party Friday, so I may get to the meetup a bit later :p.

Nice OT, looking forward to going again this year.

It's the only real area where it makes sense for Riot as it's fairly open and their booth gets MOBBED.

Great to see the OT up and running. I leave it in better hands. I can't believe it's next week! Spring Break also starts next weekend and I have a ton of homework to do before next Thursday.

To reiterate for newcomers, I'll be an Enforcer on the Show Floor (might switch to Line Entertainment/ or Management if it's boring). Will be working the morning/afternoon shifts starting at 8:30AM and ending at 6:30PM. Will plan on rocking GAF shirts all 3 days. Looking forward to meeting you all.

This week is super intense for me, I have three opening receptions in boston Tonight, Thursday and Friday. So I'll be totally MIA until this weekend. I'll send you that list then, Jipan. We'll also think of something fun to do on Saturday, I'm a bit partial to dancing and making fools of ourselves, but it really depends on what those who are coming that night want to do.

I'll be there!

Haven't been able to make the GAF meetup for the past couple years so that's a priority for me this year.

Kept my plans pretty open actually, anyone have room for a guest at parties? =}

OP you may want to add this to the post, just got the email from the MBTA.

I can feel it, callin on the air tonight.

OH LORD There's 8 days until this mess pops off.

I won't be at the Pokécrawl, but piggybacking off that, is anyone going to the Star Citizen event?

I decided to go to the ASUS event instead since they have fucking The Crystal Method doing a DJ set.

I have a ticket to that Harmonix party Friday, so I may get to the meetup a bit later :p.

Me too. Going to that, then swinging back to the CAH panel to meet up with the Giantbomb fam.

There's no way the Harmonix party can be as crazy as it was last year...but I hope it's as crazy as it was last year. Like...Jeff Green in a dinosaur costume crazy.

Just realized it was the same weekend as The Masters. God Damn! Two of my favorite things on the same weekend. Luckily I live 15 minutes away so I can make a last minute decision with my Sat ticket.
Great OP.

Beginning to feel the hype. Unfortunately I can't hang with GAF because I'm underage (turn 20 the day before PAX), but it is what it is.

Pimpin' mah game!

Swing on by the Indie Megabooth to try out There Came an Echo and hobnob with the GAF elite! (Gold members get to skip the line)

Probably gonna spend most of my time at the indie megabooth, so you're sure to see me and a couple friends there!

Excited to partake in PAX again this year. It's been too long since I've been in Boston.

I would love to attend both Gaf meetups, since they were honestly the best part about my trip in 2011. It depends if I can see my Bostian friend on Thursday night rather than the weekend.

Also, I am hyped to see the Rift. I am sadden my most anticipated panels are all on Sunday, which is the same day I fly back to Tampa. I expect to be more in the city than at the actual convention.

Edit: I may bring my Boston friend to the Gaf meetup. She needs to meet more nerdy people within the city anyway.

I have an extra pass for Friday and an extra pass for Saturday. PM me if you're interested. Originally got those so my wife would come but after we thought more on it, it'd be absolute torture for her. :)

First PAX ever for me. Can't believe it's in a week. It was just nearly 6 months ago when I bought the passes lol.

Anyone going to be in Boston on Thursday? I'm coming in early to take in the sights. Anyone want to tag along?

What should I be excited about?

This is my first year going where there isn't a single game I want to check out I believe.

Well that's the thing, I'd be surprised if you've ever heard of any of most of these games before now. THe indie megabooth is awesome because it exposes you to a ton of really interesting games that are going to be available pretty soon. I got to play Bastion, Outland, Airmech, Guacamelee, Shovel Knight, Dive Kick, Drunken Robot Pornography, Line Rider, and a bunch of other great games for the first time at PAX.

That is usually the case for me. I just like hearing about a few games to keep an eye out for.

I'd say the one to watch right now is GALAK-Z. But the fun of hte megabooth is finding that gem that you had never heard of before. I saw Guacemelee there two years ago before it had a platform and absolutely fell in love with it. Same thing with Shovel Knight last year.
