Your dissapointment its totally understandable. Although I don't remember he mentioning that the game would have combat as a main topic(or any). The only combat thing I got from the game was s fight scene from one of their videos. And even so I already noticed it wasn't its really focus. Unless I would need to believe the game would have multiple combats parts where you have to defend yourself with your delivery package.
I also notice it would be unconvetional the moment Kojima said it would be a "strand game".

All i ever needed to do to beat any BTs or Bosses was using those same Bloody grenades. And the launch rocket sucks!!!

I was talking about what Kojima said, not you. If you want it or not? Not my point, just stating that the game as far it was showed never clearly had indications of a focused combat(no implies that you ever want that). Calm the heck down, I'm not here trying to prove you're wrong or anything.

Here is my question for some of you guys, what doest it matter if Death Stranding does win? Its not my type of game and winning GOTY is not really going to change that and while games like Sekiro, Astral Chain and Fire Emblem 3Houses might not win GOTY in this VGA still doesn't change the fact those where best experience I had this year.
Its not half-assed, its just pitched at a relatively low level of difficulty because outside of a handful of boss set-pieces combat is always secondary to preserving cargo condition.
If you want to avoid fighting -which you should- there are an extensive range of countermeasures available to do this, from sensor ping cancellation to cutting the BT's umbilicals, on top of all the basic stealth options.
If you do want to fight there are an equally lengthy amount of offensive tools. You can lure, repel and entrap enemies as well as damaging them with grenades and firearms all come in variants offering non-lethal, lethal and hybrid (hematic) ordnance.
The risk/reward aspect is all about trading off mobility/load capacity and defensive tools. You can go around loaded up with body armor and a variety of weapons but that affects what cargo you can carry, the transportation of which is the whole point of the game.
Sorry but you cant bemoan a lack of creativity when you say you slavishly stuck to one type of weapon. Did you try using grenades to make weak-areas and then pepper the BT's with lethal rounds? Grenades and rockets are fine, but they are far from optimal both in terms of damage dealt and performance/weight ratio.
Lastly, and I know I keep harping on about this comparison, but compared to the combat/boss fights in Res Evil 2 remake, Death Stranding is vastly superior as an action game. So if you want to disallow DS from GOTY contention on those grounds, I'd LOVE to hear why RE2R gets a pass.
It matters because it’s one of the most unique fucking gaming experience compared to the majority of shit churned out these nowadays.

1. Combat in RE2 is very engaging, intuitive and fluid. Every gun is at the "ready" with a click of a button ( if i remember you press left or right on the Dpad) you select a gun and you blast! Easy, fluid controls.
Every single great game that has some combat should have 1 or 2 buttons dedicated to the weapons. Equipments should not share the same wheel with guns etc...like it is right now in Death Stranding.
The combat and weapon wheel in DS.... in one word is "clunky", disorganised and serviceable.
1. During combat, you have to click the stick 2 or 3 times to reach the weapons wheel, press circle or triangle ( if i remember correctly) to be able to select a gun or a grenade among the other equipments. This is bad design.
2. The weapons and equipments icons share the same space and colours on the wheel. you have to read sometime to not make a mistake. not intuitive. and graphically it is confusing during battle.
Every encounter in RE2R, including boss fights, boils down to: Run. Shoot. Run. Pick up ammo. Heal when necessary. And maybe click on a point of interest in the world to execute a scripted event. You can walk/run freely, but that's it. You cant even crouch on command, its always scripted. That's an incredibly shallow set of mechanics, its the definition of basic.
Say what you want about the encounters in DS, but they always offer more interest than simply running from corner to corner shooting until your gun is empty. Mr X seems intimidating at first until you realize that there are certain rooms into which he conveniently will never pursue you, and doing anything other than simply running away from him is pointless as you at best will make him take a knee momentarily. There is no reward to counter the risk/cost of engagement, and every encounter is exactly the same.
The key thing is that this limited palette is considered a positive because it fits into the expectations for a "true" survival horror game os, whereas DS gets criticized for not being a combat-centric modern open-world title like MGSV.
What Death Stranding is going for is as distinctly different from a pure third-person action game (e.g. Gears or Control) as RE2R is. But because it doesn't fit into a pre-existing template its getting looked-at differently.
I do agree with Sakurai's comments that some aspects of the UI are unwieldy (the press-hold, tap alternatives are clunky) but to a degree its understandable because you can do, and need to do so much in the inventory screens when transferring cargo between multiple local destination points. That being said, once you really get to grips with all the capabilities, its extremely useful and well thought-out.
Its just that its good at doing different stuff to what we're accustomed to.
