Peter Dinklage in Bungie's Destiny - That wizard came from the moon

I am worried about Destiny. A lot of people have a lot of faith in this game but I am genuinely worried about the quality and long-term prospects. Supporting the game for 10 years? WoW, I believed it even back in 04, but this.

To truly make a 1000 hour journey you need so much more than just a good good game. Plus we haven't seen the competitive side, we haven't seen the raid side. We don't even know how serious the social and community side of it will be.

Planetside 2 is a really well made game. It's massive, it has great support, good graphics but people just didn't stay.

There's no way they support Destiny for 10 years. Maybe the BRAND, but the game they're shipping this fall? Nope.

I feel like it's bad because of a combination of acting/directing and just terrible dialogue.

I mean how do you say "if you see anything floating, kill it" well?

Bungie has always had this problem a little bit. Remember "Where are we going sir?" "To war!" Lol.

Given the quality of the lines people are quoting in here, Dinklage was probably just staring down at his script in embarrassment.
Then he needs to be like Kiefer Sutherland in the 24 game:

In fact we did have one instance when Kiefer looked at an in-game line, then looked at us and said "There's no way those words are coming out of my mouth!" -- Needless to say we soon rewrote that particular line.

xD

I think he's absolutely awful, and am honestly surprised Bungie stick with it.

Though, considering how hilariously terrible his accent is in Game of Thrones, I find his performance to be pretty par the course, to be honest.

I like it. Comes across as an advanced but emotionally limited AI construct and adds to the otherworldly, almost dreamlike atmosphere the game has.

Yeah, he isn't very good. Utter lack of conviction and a script that means he has nothing to work with. Even in the hands of an experienced VO artist, that script would be a challenge. Shame really.

But he doesn't sound like an AI, He sounds like a bored Peter Dinklage reading his lines off a script.

What does an AI sound like?

Seriously there is no precedent for what an average AI sounds like. Only various ideas of execution (most using filters). They didn't use a filter here. It's fine. I feel like the the negative reaction to his voice is really just silly expectations.

I think the thing is that he just sounds like a bored human rather than an unemotional machine. Give it a light filter or something to make it more clear it is the little robot buddy and not some guy on a headset and I think it'll be fine.

They could use a filter, sure. But there's nothing wrong with not using one. Brent Spiner didn't have a filter on his voice for his depiction of Data and no one ever complained about him sounding bored, rather than robotic. That was likely due to the fact that he was in front of a camera and visible to the audience, so his physical acting contributed to it but it's not objectively ineffective even without physical acting to help it out.

Yeah, hilariously terrible. Love that hyperbole.

Clearly this is the direction Bungie wants from the character or they would have changed it.

He's an informational AI.

What the fuck do you want...

People hate on it for no reason other than being Bungie. It's a goddamn AI with a monotonous voice, but since it's Bungie and a high profile actor, it's automatically shit, even though it's obviously supposed to be like that. AI and soulless voice is so normal in games I dont get it why it's a problem now.

It's bad. Like he isn't being directed whats so ever and he is just reading his lines with no emotion. Sounds like a audio book read.
Not all audio books are like that, listen to anything by Stephen fry, George guidel, Jim dale

Anyway, I think the voice is fine, as well as the pvp

He sounds bored, and from what I've seen of the script they gave him, I can't blame him.

Not sure how you're supposed to offer an engaging delivery for "wizards from the moon."

I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be emotionless because he's a robot in the game.

I would say it's a problem with the directing/character and not with the actor himself.

You said it better than I did. It's sort of a soothing mellow atmospheric tone.

I don't know, maybe a robotic filter would make people more comfortable with the performance.

Nah

I would bet my left nut many of the people posting in this thread are fans of Halo/Bungie.

There's a difference between soulless and uninterested, sadly. I feel his performance leans towards the latter more often than not. There are moments where he's bringing something interesting to the role, but ultimately? He sounds bored.

I thought he sounded disinterested much of the time, almost like a rehearsal script. Not terrible, especially not if this is first voice acting bit, but he's no Jen Taylor.

When he mentions flying wizards he sounds like he's thinking "What is this shit?"

He's an informational AI.

What the fuck do you want...

I don't know what he is. His musings about the state of the world pre-Collapse seem out of place for a purely informational AI. As do his lines delivered in a less-monotone way, like "...It's the Hive!". If he was meant to be an emotionless information delivery machine, the line should have read something like "Hive detected. Be on guard.". The wizard line should have been something like "Detecting Hive wizard. Evidence suggests that moon containment measures have been compromised.", or something. But they're written with more flavor than that, which is unnecessary for that type of AI.

As if it makes it any better if it is intentional. Intentionally terrible dialogue? If that was the intention then whoever came up with that idea needs to be fired.

I agree. All the voiceover from him in the Alpha is very flat. That might be the intent though - something closer to SHODAN than Cortana.

That raises the question as to why you'd you cast a known actor. Maybe you meet the human form as well, like Halsey in Halo Reach.

Maybe it isn't bad acting or direction? Maybe he was just miscast? Idk but it is pretty laughable. And. the crucible announcer...LMFAO. Good lord.

Average. He sounds extremely bored or something. It's not the worst voice I've heard in a game but it certainly doesn't suit the role.

I think it's fine. He's playing a robot and and his tone really matches the more relaxed, chill nature of the soundtrack and the open world exploration.

I haven't played the alpha, just watched some footage as well as the trailers, but this was my impression, too. I think it's an unfortunate situation of pairing a great actor with a lifeless script and maybe a lack of direction, or just asking him to play a more monotone AI voice which would be equally criminal. His delivery sounds average at best.

Just watched some videos of this (haven't played the game). He sounds pretty bad/out of place. No enthusiasm at all. Even if he's meant to be a robot or something it's not good.
But it seems like more of a case of bad casting. Should have gotten someone like Nolan North or something instead, somebody who can do different voices convincingly. Seems like they just hired Dinklage because he's a somewhat big name right now due to GoT.

Bad. He sounds so bored. I imagine this is what recording sessions were like

Dinklage said:
"It's the hive."

Wait, what's the hive again? No, you know what, fuck it. I don't care as long as I'm getting paid.

I feel like it's reasonable to ask, given your response: Have you had a chance to play the alpha yourself? The script for this AI regularly has him expressing emotion, even fairly base emotion like fear and dread.

In sci-fi terms, this entity doesn't make sense with the performance it's been given. The purpose of an AI having any human aspects is so that it can socialize with people. The idea of technology perfectly capable of mimicking human voice for an AI this advanced but have it vocalize with such unnecessarily awkward, unnatural intonation that it would undermine any connection with a living operator is preposterous. It's the equivalent of an Uncanny Valley for vocalization. Considering the state of modern automated voice intonation without the technology of the Destiny universe, this performance (in its current form, at least) comes off little better than ending every sentence with "bleep bloop, I am a robot."

Would you mind pointing out the people making those particular assertions?

doesn't bother me. but it's definitely not a very memorable voice that is going to become iconic for the game.

i doubt bungie would change any of it though, they obviously dug it and it is an actor with a bigger name.

Exactly. If he's supposed to be a robotic, emotionless AI, then go with that and give him lines of dialogue that reflect that. If he's supposed to be more of a higher form, more natural AI, then do a Cortana and have the actor give an expressive, natural performance. Don't just try and sit on the fence and confuse the player with something that doesn't know what it wants to be. Don't try and give him lines like "It's the Hive!" and "Alright, this time... we go wherever we want!" and then defend the flat stilted delivery by claiming he's just supposed to be an emotionless robot. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too.

Okay... now I know he's playing an AI character it makes a lot more sense, perhaps i missed that bit in the game?

I do think there are one or two poorly written lines that don't help the cause, but overall i don't mind it.

People going "he's playing an AI what do you guys want" are wildly missing the point. You can voice an artificial intelligence without sounding like you'd wanna be doing something else, you know.

It's a shit performance.

Why would they spend the money to hire Dinklage if it's just supposed to be a "goddamn AI with a monotonous voice"? You could get anyone around the office to do that for free. They obviously thought Dinklage would bring something other than that, and he didn't.

Right now it does feel off. I'd say it's average. It's off-putting at first, but you get used to it rather quickly. I think it'll be tuned up by the time the final game ships though.

The crucible announcer on the other hand....completely awful. What were they thinking with that one?
