Player's that don't use mics in MP centric games ruin them

I had a standalone mic on the ps3. It's just too much trouble since if you're playing with the sound coming from the T.V. it will play back on the mic and is just annoying to everyone else hearing the echo. Or alternatively, you play with no sound which is not ideal. Honestly, the cheap mics that come with the PS4 and Xbox are good enough for just about anything.

Ok, mics are probably not for me then, too antisocial with those around me. Sorry team, I'll try nod or something.

People have become more sheltered and socially awkward due to party chats and social media. The days where everyone had a mic in the general chat is long over . Sad but thats this generation for ya .

Well said. Took the words right out my mouth

I imagine if you are a woman you might want to avoid people finding that out as much as possible before the harassment ensues.

I'm with you OP. I'll mute half of Xbox Live as soon as they start talking, but when people communicate well I appreciate it so much. I mostly play solo and so I can obviously enjoy games even without people talking, but it's always better when they do.

Yeah, I've never played with a woman on XBL without hearing her get harassed multiple times.

So here's what I find odd, for myself anyway. Back when the XBOX 360 was my main console and CoD2 was my main game, I would play MP with randos all the time. In fact, that was part of the fun of playing. Now I feel like I've met a few people I like talking to and pretty much stick to Party Chat with them even if we're playing different games. It is a bit crazy, but I feel like I've met my close circle of online gaming buddies and the rest are there to play with to fill out missing spots. Meh, maybe one day I'll play with new people when my current buddies annoy me.

I totally understand everyone's reasons for not wanting to use voice chat but I find it really depressing that barely anybody communicates in-game anymore. Online MP used to feel like couch multiplayer in the sense that there was constant communication (of every kind) and nobody was shy about it. Obviously that led to a fair bit of toxicity but I would honestly still rather the mixed bag of voice chat over the endless void of silence I hit now. It just doesn't feel like anybody is interested anymore in being part of a social community. It's not surprising. It correlates with the measurable social trend among youths towards non-vocal communication, social anxiety and isolation.

I still miss it, though.

yeah this is pretty much me
overwatch is ok for being a girl on mic (but I'm on australian servers)
dota on the other hand was

You know what kills MP games these days more than no mic chat? Player attitude. Everyone thinks they are the best, everyone thinks everyone else is a fucking "scrub". Everyone thinks like an esports pro, they have to follow a meta, they have to only use leet strats.

Everyone has a "me vs the world" attitude and it's ruining online games. Most communities are impenetrable by newcomers, no one is humble in defeat, every loss is the end of the world and everyone else in the team but you played like shit.

It's all over folks.

Honestly, I would be more inclined to use a mic if I wasn't hearing everything going on at someone's house. Or music blaring in your ear or someone is watching TV too loud in the background. Sure, you can mute those people. But it just becomes a hassle to do it every other match. If it's not friends, I don't bother. There's also the potential for online harassment when things don't go someone's way - which sadly, happens more times than not. We might hit an age where most people act civilized in MP based games someday. Some games are a hit or miss though.

Oh boy, there are so many things wrong with the playerbase that ruins MP games, it's not the lack of communication. It's more about how and what people communicate, which is way too often something toxic. If people weren't complete assholes, others would be much more willing to communicate too. It's not uncommon nowadays that people just mute everyone because of earlier negative experiences.

There's absolutely an advantage in good communication in team based MP titles. But that all goes to waste when there's the first one shouting to their teammate how bad they think they are. Which is why I like to play with friends and use VOIP. I do use pings/voice commands when available even with randoms though.

And voice com isn't only way to play for the team. The dude talking the most can be the contributing least to teams chances on winning.

And if you aren't using push to talk, you are ruining the game too. I hunted everyone down in Division when I heard their mic being constantly on.

I think playing Halo: Reach online was the last time I regularly used a mic. I gave on this current gen and only mic up when I'm in party chat. Dabbling in solo PUBG lately has made me realize how shitty the average random can be on mic, so I don't miss it at all.

It's fairly disappointing. I've noticed this far too frequently on battlegrounds as well. It's great when people communicate I wish I could have added some of them to continue working together but what's the point of working in squads if you aren't going to communicate knowing the whole point of squads is working together. There's a whole mode dedicated to solo work and it feels like a massive waste of time trying to help out and doing the best to give directions and communicate but feeling ignored.

Nah.

I cannot, in good faith, recall a time I had a meaningful experience towards the game's objective with a random. If I'm playing with friends, we're on a private chat client.

This is my recollection of all the competitive games I've played that had mics enabled:

-Hearing the game through someone's mic
-Kids screaming or baby crying
-Arguing with parents/friend/spouse.
-Racial/Bigoted bullshit
-"Oh they got me" ad nauseum
-Some variation of "This team fucking sucks I wish you could all get on my level"

I don't know what mythical people you guys are playing with online but you must be communicated to me over gaf from some other universe. COD4 was so bad when they didn't even have an option to mute. Urgh, those were dark times.

I hate using a mic with randoms but still love competitive games. I also have a young child which limits when I can actually be loud and talking anyway. I mostly play ranked games in Rainbow Six Siege, still no mic. I know it diminishes the experience for others but oh well I paid for the game I have a right to enjoy it how I wish. I never used to play ranked for this reason, but then when I actually started playing I realised a lot of people don't use mics. It's not that big of a deal.

Atleast stay out of ranked mode if you have no mic.
I guess it wouldn't really matter in lower ranked games but eventually you'll need communication

No I'm not going to use a mic if I don't want to lol. If competitive queues matter so much to you, why the hell are you playing with pugs in the first place? Fuck outta here. Knowing that some of you rage over this is wonderful.

?? What does 'toxic person' mean to you?
Where are you getting rage from? And I addressed all of your other points in this thread. Also youre happy to know my experience is affected by this? Whats wrong with you?

After being called autistic (why this is used as an insult I can't describe my hate enough for), a f*ggot, the n word, many other slurs on top of many shitty people that don't understand that you can't win every match and start arguing and shittalking people in an unnecessarily aggressive fashion...

I'll keep quiet and you can deal with it, thank you. I don't care if I'm in competitive. Most people are assholes or they're faux nice until you start losing. I'm gonna play, I'm gonna do my best and people can shove it if I don't feel like talking.

And this is just in Overwatch for me. There's lots of games just as bad if not worse.

Are you the kind of person who thinks doing thins "for the lulz" means everything is suddenly acceptable?

Because if so, I'll just add you to my block list now.

While true, you find your willingness to deal with pubbies lessens dramatically when you're trying to play during someone's racist diatribe. I don't blame anyone who doesn't want to interface with it out of principle.

Someone sits alone at the middle school lunch table.

Real players have LAN parties every night with their buddies and just scream at each other from across the room. Who needs mics.

Something I think would be interesting is if you can set matchmaking parameters to "prefer people with mics"

I'm sure I've seen lobbies like this in games. Everyone has a mic and you hear nothing but loud music, mouth breating, and children crying in the background. And noone actually talks about the game.

However I disagree somewhat with the op most mp games honestly are pretty shallow and after a few dozen hours you don't need alot of communication to succeed it's actually more important the people know what they're doing ... Even R6 siege eventually everyone just knows the maps and does pretty much the same things. Battlefield my friends and I would chat but barely ever talked strategy after a few hundred games lol. You just know what to do

This is honestly a non issue for me these days. With my list of friends, friends of friends that always join, and gaming communities almost 100% of my online play time is with acquaintances. It's also been surprisingly easy to find people willing to forgo party chat in favor of in-game chat for games like Friday the 13th, or sea of Thieves.

I've seen threads where Gaffers showed overt racism. I've seen threads where Gaffers showed overt fanboyism. I've seen threads with obvious sexism.

This thread is STILL one of the worst I've seen. Absolutely disgusting and I hope those who are saying they don't talk in chat or refuse to communicate in high stakes team based gameplay go right to hell.

Lol
I like this post.

When I play Overwatch competitive mode, I almost feel guilty if I'm not on mic. Even if it's just to say an empty courtesy like "hey everyone" or "how are you guys today." In the games where I do say a simple courtesy, I notice that the vast majority of those games, people actually play to win. I notice when everyone is silent, you get a lot of attack Torbs, Widowmakers and Hanzos with no one playing healer. But once people speak and are willing to move off of a "main" so someone else can play that character, people actually start trying to win again.

Also, I just had a game tonight where everyone on the team was talking on mic and everyone on the team was encouraging their teammates. It was incredible. Not since running Destiny raids with other Gaffers have I felt such a positive and encouraging atmosphere.

It's going to be quite the change going back to COD's multiplayer where I never got on mic and almost always muted all my teammates.
