Neo should connect to a Supplemental Computing Device for improved 4K gaming performance.

And the PS4 SCD would be something like the old GSCube

bM3Btt3.jpg

Edit: (16 parallel PS2s) 16 Emotion Engines - 16 Graphics Synthesizers.

32MB eDRAM on each GS chip (instead of 4MB in PS2) and 128 MB RDRAM system memory per EE. instead of 32MB in a PS2)
- 512 MB eDRAM total. 755 GB/sec aggregate eDRAM bandwidth. 2GB RDRAM system memory, total. This was in 2001.

Would be pretty cool if PS4 Neo could make use of some sort of SCD, like the potential that NX might have (from those patents) but we know it won't happen.

I'm not one of those "give me 60fps or death" gamers. I'd be perfectly happy playing most games at LOCKED 30fps with the visuals cranked way up. Fighting, sports and and other competitive games and I prefer to be 60fps though.

We are not going to get every game at 60fps.

Neither am I, except for select few genre(s) that I indulge on a weekly basis like First Person Shooter Multiplayer/Racing/Fifa

Am I the only one who just wants 1080p/60fps with the same visual fidelity or more as current gen 1080p/30fps games on PS4?

I'd rather they lock it to 30fps and use the rest of the power to improve on everything else.

Eg. Split-screen for all multiplayer games would be amazing.

NEO games can't have separate features from base PS4 games. So the addition of split-screen that isn't already an option won't be happening, unfortunately.

My main want from Neo is how much of a visual and performance-based benefit will VR owners get over the OG PS4? I'm sure a lot, but I just hope that developers really tap into that power to make PSVR shine.

I don't see why VR would be any different than normal games. expect similar improvements. nothing more

Yeah I remember that thread but I'm asking if he's ever leaked something previous to that?

And that thread mentions a 2017 release date and says that God of War and Deep Down would be launch titles, but everything that's happened since then seems contradict that info.

I think he used to provide some sales information on retail games. Nothing big like this though.

I just wanted to make sure. I just hope Sony allows for a huge graphical difference between the two and not hold it back because they don't want to seem like they are giving OG PS4 users a bad deal. VR is my main interest after trying PSVR and I hope they go crazy with it on Neo and PS4.

You still benefit at 1080p of the output is 4K due to downscaling. But I highly doubt anything from the system is going to be native 4k other than Netflix, vudu and movies

Not sure it's actually going to work that way. Most of the games will likely already be 1080p, and then upscaled for 4K TVs. I wouldn't think that it would upscale a 1080p game to 4K, just to downsample it back to 1080p. It would just skip the upscaling altogether if you're outputting to a 1080p screen.

Checkerboard rendering is not upscaling

Utilizing checkerboard rendering to hit 4k will need a base res well above 1080p. I assume that if you're using a 1080p display it'll downscale instead of doing the reconstruction.

I guess we'll find out on the 7th. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to announce the Slim and another, slightly more expensive system that makes it completely obsolete on 1080p screens at the same time. Unless it's just not going to release until sometime next year.

The GSCube! Back when Kutaragi thought that Playstation 2 technology would power all the rendering farms doing CG movies Lol. Crazy Ken indeed :p Still that thing could run Final Fantasy The Spirits Within at interactive frame rates if I remember correctly.

About the Neo I think there are pretty good reasons for them not wanting to break the 399$ barrier, they could have done that with the PSVR considering the price of the competition but they didn't and pretty honestly I don't think the rumored specs of the system are worth more than that price. It's an overclocked PS4,not a next gen console, the extra CUs in the GPU are made possible by the 16nm process but the die area likely isn't any bigger than the current 28nm APU.
BUT if they are trying to reduce the gap with Scorpio, trying to push on the clock frequency and using advanced power supply and heatsink technologies plus other features that we don't yet, I could see and justify a 449$ price. I really don't think they'll go higher than that and if you wait until BF price will be lower anyway.

I worded it badly but that was the reason I mentioned I highly doubt any of it's going to be in native 4K.

But yes, the game res would have to be above 1080p for it to actually work of course :)

Doesn't really seem like an event for new game announcements.

You're wrong on this, Playstation Meetings have always been about new game announcements as well.
Afterall it would be boring if they showcased the same games we already know about at a higher resolution (which is a difference that people watching a livestream won't even notice) or with slightly better graphics. There will be surprises, not like E3 of course.

isn't the very reason Sony gave as to why they didn't show neo at e3 this year basically because SW that showed the difference it brought ...wasn't ready ?

i assume now that SW IS ready .... so why wouldn't they show it?

And yeh they could show Uncharted4 running on neo ... but ... something new always makes a bigger splash.

Maybe not new games, but I at least expect demonstrations of games in regular mode compared to 'Neo mode'.
That's a given

But is that not the entire point of revealing the Neo? They have to show why it's worth buying. I remember Andrew House or someone saying that they were waiting to reveal it because the games weren't ready, so this sounds like the perfect time.

I just don't see new announcements happening. There's still TGS, PGW and PSX to go.

I think they'll try to leverage a few major released titles and have a major showcase of the big multiplats this fall

They don't have to show previously unannounced games. There's plenty of stuff coming out that we know about and they can fill the meeting with (like Titanfall, Gran Turismo, Last Guardian, Gravity Rush, Call of Duty, 2K, etc)

It makes more sense to show upgrades for games coming out at that same time as the console, rather than games we won't be playing until 2017-2018.

Do we know when to expect Neo to be released, or is it just "2016" or "2017" until this meeting?

ie, should I go ahead and start my UHD Bluray collection or wait?

I think there are more interesting and creative ways to make people hyped about the new system than showing Uncharted 4 for the millionth time but running at 1800p. People watching a livestream won't even notice the difference. It's hard to notice on an actual TV.....
I expect a couple of new big titles to debut directly with Neo graphics :p
We'll see though, the event is coming.

Yes I think there will be both these things, a quick section about old games getting patched and an other focusing on big upcoming titles.
But they know really well that to truly create hype they need a few really convincing demos, big titles where people are amazed at the differences with the current system or maybe new titles showcased for the first time with graphics ahead of what it's expected from the current PS4. This is what Andrew House meant when he said that they wanted to announce it when the software is ready, they want to have convincing arguments.
They won't create any hype by just telling people: here's the same game but running at 1440p or 1800p,sorry if you don't notice the difference right now but we promise you will on your TV, please preorder :p

Should we expect any megaton other than Neo?
Wouldn't really be a Playstation event without something. It's a "Future of Playstation" event, which is what they called the PS4 reveal event. Gotta assume some games will be there but it should be interesting none the less. I want them to announce HBO Now coming to Vue or standalone. State of Playstation originals would be cool too. Boring for most probably but I'd be interested in it.

Really not looking forward to this, honestly. PS4 has been out less than 3 years, it feels like these new Xbox & PS consoles are what the One & 4 should've been. I'm a PC gamer first and foremost but I love a lot of PS franchises so I'll always buy a PS. But unless the Neo is significantly better, and not just in terms of raw power, I'll definitely be skipping it.

As a side note, would be good to see the reveal of From Software's next title, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'm the same way except typically PC/Nintendo, but I'll be buying a Neo for UHD gaming and bluray.

So.....Bloodborne gets revisited by me if there is a Neo patch. So please let there be a Neo patch.

And, does anyone else think that Sony might mitigate the power differential between Neo and Scorpio with a little "secret sauce"? Either another chip or special instruction set for GPU or further specialising the gpu compute funtcions.

This is the #1 thing that will make me buy a Neo. I'm replaying DS3 on PC now and it's fucking glorious in 60FPS. Bloodborne is GOAT, steady 60FPS will make it... better than GOAT? Whatever that is.
