PS3 3.30 System Software Update (3D, trophy sorting, taunting Dragona)

GeekyDad said:
Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but I updated the firmware, and now neither of my controllers will communicate with the system. Each controller just blinks for a couple of minutes and shuts off. Can't even turn on the system with my controllers. Anyone experience this?

Tried connecting via the USB charging cable to sync?

Edit: Late as usual. doh.

How so? Which sites had issues?

Youtube standard version didn't work after they upgraded their site. I had to obt to XL version which sucked. I've just Dled this new firmware update and youtube is working again indeed. So glad...When they mentioned trophy sorting, I thought you get to delete some trophies as well, like the ones you only tried and have 0% on...that's annoying but getting some sort of sorting is better than nothing I guess :/

Happened to me too. It's easily solved. Just turn on the PS3 with the button then plug in your controller with a USB cable and turn it on separately. You can unplug it after the PS3 has booted up.

Thanks, man!

Is this "Join Session" menu available in the "no game launched full XMB" or only in the in-game XMB when I'm running the same game as the friend ? Is there a special icon on the friend list that shows the friend is "joinable" ?

No. It isn't part of the full XMB. It isn't even part of the in-game XMB. YOU HAVE TO HAVE MW2 IN (and yes, I knew of this, but it isn't the same as full-XMB option) and then fumble into the XMB to the user profile to see "Join Session" pop-up to see if they're open in slots.

The XMB->Triangle->Join Session is cumbersome, but it should be across all games and there should be a notification for the option to be used in the friends list.

As much as I love the XMB, the options it uses for PSN are cumbersome and clunky. :/

(And there is a reason people bitch and go "LOOK AT XBL! DO IT LIKE THAT!" It's because XBL does it right. PS4 really needs to have most of the BASICS (Join Session in Progress, Non-shitty Cross-Game Invites, Mandatory [Text/Voice] chat...) before even thinking of cross-game voice chat or anything else of the sort.)

It's really low res/blown up and extremely ugly. I hate going to my trophies cause I have to look at it.

Blame Activision, not Sony.

magicaltrevor said:

Yes, it's there. But it's a "hack" AFAIK, there is no official option in the firmwares for join session in progress.

Besides, it's implemented kinda badly, there is no icon to let you know if you can join in progress, you have to go into the "gamercard" of the person you want to maybe join and see if the option pops-up. :lol

Ok, I gotta say I really like how smoothly the trophies load now. Just made a trophy comparison with buddy online and they popped up instantaneously in alphabetical order. Very nice!

Dragona, this is not coming from me, so don't ban me if this is false information. :lol

On Gizmodo, a commenter says this update will not wipe Linux if you haven't installed the Linux-wiping update.

@Rosa Golijan:

Incase you care or find this interesting:

This specific update won't wipe your old Linux.

My house make is running linux on his ps3 and just updated.
He's still got linux running.

However, it then asked if he wanted to install the previous update to which he declined.
Had he installed that one, linux would be gone.

this thread is really bad because >50% of the posts are literally "let us do what the 360 does".
I wouldn't be surprised if that chorus rises as more people move from 360 to owning both. When I first got my launch PS3 I had a really hard time adjusting to the fact that all the community integration I'd taken for granted was gone. It felt like a step backwards. Nowadays I'm less fussed but only because I've forgotten about the community niceties as I've played my 360 less. I think the grumbles are genuine and I hope if enough people voice them then Sony will figure out that a lot of people want to own a PS3 that "does what the 360 does".

I'm pretty sure that all of those features will be in the OS when when the PS4 launches...

By the way: What's wrong with the current cross-game invites? They work just the same as on Xbox Live. The only difference is - and this is mainly the reason why they feel 'clunky' - that you cannot immediately go to them when the notification appears.

Also: Why aren't there any sound effects to choose from? Trophy-notifications are accompanied by a nice little sound effect, so why can't there be optional sound effects for when you receive a message/invite? Would be very useful if I'm working on my computer, but have my PS3 on in the living room.

Whoops, sorry for the doublepost.

Kind of sucks that there aren't any 3D games to test it with. Wipeout and SSD aren't ready?
Cos it is not out yet, even Sony said so on the OP link, this firmware prepare for it.

I dunno how long, I don't care since I don't think I will get 3DTV that soon.

Got a little nervous during the install portion last night. My controller suddenly lost connectivity, and it wouldnt restore. I would hit the PS button, and all 4 lights would just blink endlessly.

The install finished, and the system rebooted. At the menu when i hit to PS Button, again all 4 lights flashed endlessly...hooked up the cable and it was fine. Unhooked it, and it immediately lost its sync. I powered off the PS3. Turned it on with the power button on the Slim and after it booted up, i hit the PS button and it still wouldnt sync! I then used the cable again, hit the button and it turned on, unplugged the cable and it was fine.

Did anyone else have weird issues like that after updating?

I'd say ban for idiot commentor on Gizmodo anyway, but~

I doubt anyone, even Dragona, that is staying on 3.15 due to the OtherOS issue is going to be ballsy enough to try what a "my friend that works at Sony's grandpa's mother says..."

Have you ever used X-box Live?

The cross-game invites work better because a) The invite has a "join" message on it (most of the cross-game invite supported titles on PSN DO NOT have this option and you have to boot the game to even accept the invite) b) the MESSAGES NOTIFY YOU OF WHAT THEY ARE. "BIOHAZARD 5" does NOT tell me that a player wants to play with me in that game unless I check the message (now that it's been like this for a year or two, it's a "Oh, it's a game message" but for people NEW to the service it's BAD) c) A+B = BAD. X-box Live's way of doing it is less cumbersome and clunky. And yes, they should add the "current active message on the PSN HUD should be the current PS Button option for quick access" but they won't.

I have to say that it does sorta make sense, given that 3.30 has been in testing a lot longer than 3.21 was around and snuck out, it's possible that it's something they added in to 3.21 and (presumably) 3.31, but didn't want to wait longer to ensure it played nice with 3.30's changes so threw out a stopgap patch to kill OtherOS in the short term.

It *should* be safe to test, since you can look to see if 3.30's patch gives the "I'll kill OtherOS, by the way" warning. Having said that, I wouldn't put it past Sony forgetting to put the warning in 3.30...

I'm half-tempted to try it, I'm still on 3.15, not really through protestation, more through laziness; I'm not pushing to keep OtherOS. I'm busy right now, but I might have a go at the weekend.

In that vein I want at least the Alerts system from Home to be brought to the XMB if not full blown message/invite implementation.

Essentially press PS button go to an Alerts section and see all in one place with a quick button to respond/act, rather than browse to messages and read, then go through another process to join.

I suggested it here:

Soooooooooo I just hooked up My BlackBerry on BES.... and started playing around with Voice msgs over BBM...

and it made me wonder...

WHY THE HELL THIS CAN"T BE IMPLEMENTED BY SONY...

I mean.. in BBM with 1-2 clicks of the button you can record a 20 sec(?) audio clip which will be sent to the person... and the file size for that clip is on average for me... 10kb For 10-20 SECONDS OF AUDIO...

SONY WHY CAN I NOT GET THIS FEATURE...

Scenario:
Hey... my friend just came online
===> PS BUTTON
===> Go to friend
===> Press... button
===> Select Voice mail (which it starts recording imediately)
-----(Hit any key to stop recording... option to play it back, send it... or cancel)

That whole process would be soo sweet... I cannot imagine that 10-100 kb of RAM would be that hard to work around for this..

I imagine it's an issue of saving young Johnny from the creative expletives that everyone would send to him.

I'd try it for you guys if my PS3 60gb sold a day later.
My eBay listing said it was FW 3.21 -- and I only updated the day it sold so I could transfer data to my replacement PS3 slim.

Have you ever played Modern Warfare 2 or Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on PS3? I guess not, as with those two games (and DiRT 2) there actually IS a 'Join' button in the message (that, by the way, is titled with the name of the game). When you press this button, it will bypass loading screens automatically and take you straight into the lobby/game. If you are in another game, (or just in the regular XMB), it will alert you that all unsaved progress will be lost and ask you to insert the correct gamedisc. Yes, just like with Xbox Live.

I know... Exciting, isn't it? ;-) I was thrilled when I found out that this feature is finally available on PS3.

The problem is though, as with most new features, that not all game-developers make use of the new functionalities. The Skate 3 demo, for instance, uses the traditional invite system (you have to accept the invites through the in-game menu) eventhough it's an EA game (like BF:BC2) and it came out much later than both MW2 and BF:BC2...

=(

Come on, devs! There is a shiny new feature and most of you don't even touch it.

OR: Sony should just make this shit mandatory instead of an optional feature that's hidden somewhere in the back of the PS3's development-manual, like they did with Trophies

Yes Sony because I'm going to buy a new TV based off of a novelty such as 3D. (I just bought a Samsung "32 720p TV last year...)

You bought a new one for HD, you just said it yourself... this is just the next trend and it's not going to be mainstream for several years, so no one's forcing you to upgrade. This is still the early early early adopter phase.

Really awestruck at all the hate and nitpicking in every PS3 thread (thisisgafdude?) Really bogs down the intelligent discussion with negativity, which breeds more negativity.

Listen to Conan O'Brien... cynicism is not a good quality.

oh I see now, so the Join button appears in game invites, even in the regular XMB. It also shows up in a friend's profile but only when you're running the same game. right ?

Correct. So, to 'cross-game join' a friend you need an invite, but to 'manually join' a friend (without being invited) through the XMB's Friendlist you'd have to be in the same game.

Also: The only game that supports 'joining manually through XMB' right now is Modern Warfare 2. In BF:BC2 you need to do this through a custom 'Play with friends' in-game menu, which was a big dissapointment to me. Another thing MW2 has is proper use of 'Presence Data'. You know, the little text info below a friends' name about what he/she is doing (Like 'Playing Team Deathmatch in Scrapyard'). BF:BC2 does not have this... but it would be really useful to see things like 'Playing Rush on Laguna Presa 3/4', so I know what gametype they're playing and if there's room enough to join a squad.

I suggested both features on the BF:BC2 forum (joining friends through XMB and adding Presence Data), and a DICE developer replied with: "Some of these features are being looked into, but no promises".

whooo!! Trophy organizing! :lol

Seriously though, I bought my 61" 1080p LCD just over 2yrs ago and I'm not upgrading to 3D anytime soon.

It crossed my mind but until your post the significance of I didn't think too much about it..

The system doesn't bypass the loading screens in BC2 though.

I have played both of those games. And it's still a horrible clunky and mismanaged thing. The join button is a game-by-game basis, just like cross-invites.

They need to make it unified. If you're going to use cross-game invites, the "join" button and messages should be better included/thought out.

It's far too late in the game this generation for them to make it mandatory, what with how many different systems (Bio5/MW2,BC2) in place for the same damn thing. :/

Too bad Sony didn't care about putting this features during PS3 launch when they were already available on 360, they'd need to patch all previously released online multiplayer games to make it unified.

They still don' have to. If newer games support it, older games don't have to. The whole 'exit while losing your unsaved data thing' is the same for older as newer games. As long as the new game you are playing supports it, anyone can exit their game to enter yours.
