Nevermind, I take everything back I said. This is another awesome firmware update that makes gaming even better on the PS3 gaming console. Glad to see Sony is actually trying to improve something to do with gaming on their hardware,

Had a Burnout vid from Gamersyde on my pc, it played (.wmv) just fine. FF and RW were a bit weird though, but I was playing it off my USB stick.

Had a random avi, renamed it .divx and it too worked fine. No problems in any way. Nice, but I'm not sure if I need to rename the file or not.

those little details that aren't really needed...just a note about "I just tried a video and it worked" instead of being specific? good for you.

my wife just finished a 6 hour run of Oblivion GOTY (she hadn't played the game before either...what have I done?) so I haven't had a chance to d/l yet. Maybe tomorrow.

You know what dude? This would be a valid point if you hadn't mentioned that you weren't even going to turn your PS3 on to download it. You just came in here to be an asshole and try to piss on everyone else's parade. I personally am glad for the big media update. They didn't have to add any of this and aside from the electricity to power your electronics it won't cost you a penny. Man up and quit bitching about something good like this.

Your Xbox 360 isn't fairly quiet when not using the DVD drive?

Anyways, I'm downloading the firmware right now. I'll try and make my own observations.

Looks like there is now a Dynamic Range Control option under BD/DVD settings. I assume this addresses the issue of DD tracks sounding less impactful when being converted to LPCM.

I'll do some testing with this option and see what I come up with.

Yeah, I'm not bothering downloading it. I would love this stuff if it was in addition to features that really mattered. Don't want to shit on your parade. Have fun with the porn support if you currently have no other way to stream it to your set.

Not watching Dvix videos from the disc.

Hawt damn the Sannin fight never looked so awesome. Man, I remember the days that i could only do this on a modded xbox. So weird that now it is going to be standard with the 360 and PS3.

I really prefer this over the 360's 2 times updates a year.

Only had one out of seven attempts at playing something fail so far... can't yet figure out why the seventh won't run. So, so far so good.

Damn do I wish this thing could handle subtitle files, though.

I do too, but unfortuneately it seems Sony has listened to the whiney media (1up bitching) and will probably do much less updating next year. This was revealed in a recent interview.

I hope not because then 1up will complain how the updates are so far between each other. I think they were just finding things to complain about.
