PS3 Tard pack = No wifi + No HDMI + No MemoryStick /SD/CompactFlash

Ding Ding Ding. I forsee Nintendo and MS handing Sony their ass in the States and Europe. Japan I dunno. ;)

edit: What's even more funny, is that Sony is riding on the gaming division.

Well shit, in Japan... with the DS being so goddamn popular and Nintendo riding high on the DS Lite stuff, I see Nintendo in a VERRRRRRRRRRY good position there. I don't know what kind of HDTV penetration is going on in Japan, but jesus... Wii will be many times cheaper than the PS3 and the games'll be cheaper too. Sony has just handed Nintendo the Japanese market for all intents and purposes. I guess they didn't learn shit from PSP, huh?

If you or your friend have a tard pack, you can transfer saves using the PSP as a memory card reader!!!!

Brillant!

Just think of them as expensive VMUs. Sega always twelve steps ahead of the competition!!!!

edit- oh yeah, no wifi. Fission mailed :(

For some reason a 360 is looking so much better after that conference.

Its obvious Sony is exceedingly confidence they have gamers wrapped around their little finger. We'll see what happens.

Only 1 HDMI port on the $600 version - did multi-monitor support quietly die?

Of course it did. As did the gigbit ethernet switch (haha). Didn't the thing have like 5 ethernet ports originally? Come on. Why do you people buy Sony's shit? It only took some critical thinking to realize that some of that stuff made no sense. They never intended to include most of it, but they wanted to steal some of Microsoft's thunder.

how? no wifi to interact with the psp in the $500 version.

You'd have to hook it up via USB.

500 bucks for people who don't want full res blu ray movies and no memory card slot and no wifi PSP support.

600 bucks for people who want a PS3.

Not quite. 500 bucks for no hdmi, which means 1080p not possible on movies that require it. Definately wont be able to watch 100% of movies in 1080p, no memor card readers, no wireless(could get it via add on).

600 bucks for everything. Apart from second controller and game.

it seems to me that sony is scrambling right now. they've got the largest corporation in the world breathing down their neck in north america and europe, and they are getting their ass handed to them in japan by nintendo (in the portable market).

their decisions seem unfocused... microsoft has two sku's, so we will too! nintendo's doing motion sensor's in the remote? we will too!!! (after all, they can't afford a 'ds' situation in japan on the home console front).

in my opinion, it's only a matter of time (3 years, 5 years, 10 years... maybe longer) before microsoft owns the home console market in north america and europe. they've got money to fucking burn. and they won't stop until the've won.

also, sony's presentation was lackluster. their launch is gonna be unimpressive. the 360's line-up at the launch of the ps3 is gonna blow sony's console's library out of the water. and it's gonna do it $100 cheaper--maybe more if microsoft does a price drop. i did not see anything in sony's conference that competed with gears of war. i really think microsoft is gonna have a better e3 showing than anyone expected.

and i definitely can't wait for nintendo's conference. i hope they show some great titles that really capitalize on the wii's abilities. and i hope they make mention of sony's thievery. christ, you could tell kutaragi was uncomfortable revealing the controller. hahahaha

Sony to become 3rd party at E3 07?

I'll admitt I laughed out loud at this one.

This is seriously disastrous. I keep telling myself it's a joke, but that conference was just....well, a disaster. It's like in two hours time I can now realistically see a video game landscape without Sony at the top.

And the fuck is that "HD era only when Sony is there". Who the fuck will buy a PS3 AND a HDTV seriously.
Further prooves the HD era is only in some years from here. Only teckies and gaming geeks doesn't form an HD era that's for sure.

Sony is making some colossal mistakes.

First, they should not bother having two different package deals. I didn't think it was a good idea with X-Box 360, and I don't think it's a good idea here either. In fact, Sony's idea is worse off--at least with X-Box 360, you could buy all the other add-ons separately.

There's no way to buy an HDMI output for the 20 GB system. That's a big problem if you were planning on jumping into "full high-definition."

I suppose you could purchase Memory Stick, CompactFlash, and SD card readers for the 20 GB system, if you really wanted them. I'm still not sure if these are really necessary, especially in the case of CF/SD. I'm more concerned about not being able to use PS1/PS2 memory cards, for those of us who have large PS1/PS2 game libraries and lots of saved game data.

Then you've got the lack of built-in Wi-Fi on the low-end machine. Again, you could probably purchase this separately, as you would do on X-Box 360 anyway. The issue here is that by not having Wi-Fi as standard on every system, they could be playing right into Nintendo's hands here. As far as I know, Nintendo will have Wi-Fi standard on the Wii (unless they pull a bonehead move and remove it from some/all of the systems), and will probably utilize that feature in conjunction with the DS. When Sony announced Wi-Fi standard on the PS3 last year, I imagined all the great things they could do in conjunction with PSP...but if it's not truly standard, then it may never be utilized to the extent that Nintendo will likely do with their system.

I suppose we could hope that Sony changes things before release. After all, Wi-Fi was once supposed to be optional on PSP, but pressure from developers forced them to make it standard on every PSP (which was a good move). I really hope that Sony hasn't set everything in stone yet. Even if they don't adjust the already high pricing, the least they should do is ensure that the features of the base console unit (apart from the hard drive) are absolutely equal. This means they might have to eat a bigger loss on the 20 GB unit, but at this point I don't see much choice if they expect to do well with this system.

It's almost like what they came into the gaming industry for is gone. PS1 was a marvel, and PS2 was a continuation of that. Now what you're left with is whatever they feel like providing. It's like the old Nintendo. And if they're going to follow the old Nintendo, they're going to follow the same fate.

Copying your competitors DRIVES attention to them. It doesnt take attention AWAY from Nintendo & MS. Everytime the new PS3 controller is brought up and somebody says Sony copied Nintendo, Nintendo will continue to come up in conversation. Unofficial marketing is what you would say.

What do you think the jokes and remarks tomorrow are going to be about? Sony. Sony had their chance. They were first. But when you screw up, you cant go do another press conference and hope for the best. What they did was throw a curveball that theyre going to regret tomorrow. Idealogically, they threw 2 curveballs they're going to regret: A)Their competitors who no doubt saw this and are changing up things(hint Reggie) and B)most of the consumers, aka casual gamers, who will wake up tomorrow, gawk at this price and what is offered and think "What ever happened to Sega?"

It's moronic.

Except they've gotten both of those fundamental points extremely and hilariously wrong.

Two SKUs - at least if you bought the lower 360 SKU you could a la carte the features you weren't getting. With the PS3, you can't.

Motion sensor - The point of it being in the Wii is to attract a casual gamer. That's why the Wiimote looks like it does. For PS3 there is absolutely no attempt being made to make it a feature that will attract non-gamers because the controller looks like the same one that nongamers are still not using anyway.

also, sony's presentation was lackluster. their launch is gonna be unimpressive.

Well, I don't know about anyone else... but I haven't thought that Sony has "won" an E3 in years. If ever. It hasn't stopped them from being #1.

Rumble + Wiimote would be awesome, as a large explosion would cause your aim to go off [Though this is usually done in software anyhow :P]

The half-arsed-ness of the PS3 remote is just weird.

so, tomorrow MS will announce a 60 gig drive to go on sale soon for 100 dollars..20 gig drives will be gone....hd dvd player will launch for 199 most likely. hmm

$700 dollars for a ps3 1 game and maybe a controller...now do you guys no why I said after e3 you'll know why MS is cranking up production. Now if only Halo 3 launches this xmas. muhahahahahaha

the question about blue ray movies without hdmi. The studios agreed not to require hdmi on the first titles when hd dvd and blu ray launch. However, they are supposed to encode the movies later in the yr. They will down sample to normal dvd resolution unless shown throw hdmi. But they dont have to encode them, they could leave them open. Mega pirating if they do though.

Don't foget 1080p no matter the source will not pass through component, no 1080p games either.

Actually no. Because the machine would be seen as overly expensive and they would just fail more and faster.

But instead they released two versions of the platform. One crippled and not upgradable and not able to take advantage of any of the great bright new future Sony is talking about and the other one expensive. The low end is missing all sorts of features at the hardware level and can't play BlueRay movies at 1080p. Hell can it even show the GT4 demo that they were showing running at 1080p? They spent so much time talking about 1080p and trying to push that as if it were a killer feature - IT ISN'T! If you can make better games at 720p and upscale them, fuck do it.

The $499 unit is a disaster at the hardware level itself! I mean if it doesn't have the ports in it, what are you going to do - get an upgrade break out box for the console? Sony self destructed on the stage from the mostly boring content, missing titles, outright theft of Nintendo's and Microsoft's real innovations, absurdly high price, and hidden gimping of the low end version. Sony has in my eyes done all they can to hand over a significant portion of the market to Microsoft.

To do what Sony has done they should have shown obscenely beautiful BluRay movies, a HomeMedia Server system, just the good games they had to show, play some games ONLINE, etc. What they did on stage just made the price hard to deal with AND at the same time they concealed that the tard pack was more than just a hard drive change difference. The controllers have lost functionality. Everything about the SOny conference just felt like a bait and switch of someone clearly not ready for prime time trying to pretend to be ready. I wouldn't touch those launch units with a 10 foot pole... of if I did, I would be sure to have a warranty.

I actually sincerely feel bad to make it look like crashing what could have been an amazing Sony party, but I have to drop this: Come November, who's going to run to the store to buy a 600 dollar console to play Warhawk.....when right next to it sits a 200 dollar system that has Mario and what's looking like the most killer Zelda game ever created?

It's just unbelievable that they would show 20 minutes of GT HD talking about 1080p when tomorrow Nintendo is almost definitely going to blow the doors off the event with AAA hitters like Zelda and Mario. This is a content-driven industry and Sony just left a lot of people in the dust on the content side. The price was just the straw.

Or better yet, an X360 is sitting there on the shelf to buy.

Exactly, I am big into home theater but I am happy with just DVD. I thought I remembered seeing them say blu ray or HD DVD would downgrade to 480i without HDMI.. thanks for filling in the blanks.

$399 PS3 w/20GB + HDMI + MS/SD/CF = SOLD!

$499 PS3 w/60GB + HDMI + MS/SD/CF + Wi-Fi = SOLD!

Agreed, except I think Wi-Fi needs to be standard fare on all PS3 systems for the reason I stated in my post above.

At this point I'd even (grudgingly) accept $499 PS3 with 20 GB HDD + HDMI +MS/SD/CF + Wi-Fi if that were the sole option. Yeah, the HDD would be the same size as Microsoft's current system (and smaller than PS2's add-on HDD), but at least we wouldn't be saddled with the chaos and confusion of two SKUs.

Besides, if the system is network friendly, then why would we need an additional 40 GB on the console's HDD, anyway? Music, photos, and videos could be stored on a PC's HDD and streamed over to the PS3, and in turn streamed from the PS3 (via Wi-Fi) to the PSP or possibly another Wi-Fi-enabled device.

Exactly what i was thinking. I'd sold too. Sony just crossed the line tonight. It's so fucking stupid.

Wow. I was waiting to see what sony was going to show off for it's PS3 before deciding to buy a 360 or wait for a PS3. But this outing by sony plus the PS3 tard pack makes the decision easy for me. As much as I'll miss not being able to play FFXIII and MGS4, I suppose Blue Dragon and Halo 3 will make up for it.

Fucking hell. I watched that entire clusterfuck of a conference, but it's going from ass to shit over here! :/

I agree with what you say, i'm only saying the price is in fact fucking stupid and it would still be event if there was only the premium PS3 and no tard pack.
Simply put, the more sales you want, the cheaper your machine need to be. Sony didn't build any empire with 500$ price tags and they never will.
Whatever the console is awesome or not, 500$ and up equals "only hardcore gamers are buying".

Sony would have been better with 360 price tag at least if they absolutely want to skus.
Ideal scenario would be the 599 PS3 at 399 or 449.

wow you guys are getting a little overly dramatic here. Yes, the pricing sucks, but make no mistake, every single goddamn unit Sony ships, tard or no tard, will be gone by day 1 and the PS3 will be "THE" hot gift to get this holiday season, just like (if not moreso) the Xbox360 was last year. People pay $200 for cellphones and $400 for ipods by the millions these days. They might lose marketshare but that probably would have happened anyway as MS learned from the mistakes of their first go-round. People acting like this is the nail in Sony's coffin and Nintendo will make some kind of triumphant return to the throne of videogaming need a reality check.

For the many who have decided to buy a 360 over a PS3, I would like to officially welcome you and please ignore my smug grin. I...er...had a bad accident with some raw hospital waste and now it's frozen there like the Joker.

Sony doesn't see that gamers have a viable alternative in the west now. Bye Sony. You can go consult N64-era Nintendo on what you did wrong next generation.

good post.

Sony is following Nintendo's footsteps, in a way

Of course, all the Nintendo did was play games......

I would not go that far. They're very voliatle, especially if Microsoft has a decent conference, with a good amount of high-profile games.
