The UMD drive in the original machine is much more expensive to make then throw in a 16 gig of memory in the GO. Everything on the GO is also smaller meaning the parts will be cheaper. On top of that, they don't have to worry about piracy and no need to work with retail which gives them even more profit.
Instead of lowering the price, they decided to jack the price so much higher.
No they won't.JunoTaksumi said:The worst bit about it is that people will still buy it at this price.

Can anyone list this against all the other consoles RRP?
This is the price of a PSP-3000 AND an Xbox 360.Baloonatic said:Pretty sure that everything except the PS3 is cheaper.

Why would they not have incentive to sell them?NinjaFridge said:As has been said many times they are probably jacking the price up so the retailers get more profit on each unit so they have incentive to sell them.

Does Apple incentivize retailers to carry the iPod?
Dabookerman said:I honestly don't think so.. I mean, this isn't a DS. You will see the PSP 3000 at £100 and this at £230. That's a HUGE difference. How much are the memory sticks these days? Cheaper than £130 I bet.

But how do people determine whether they're going to buy or not? Isn't price versus perceived value (in comparison to whatever standards of value each consumer chooses to use) a factor in consumers' choices to purchase? I sure hope so.Opiate said:This is not ripping people off, unless you think anyone who sells a machine for a profit is "ripping people off."
Honestly, the entitlement of gamers is going to be painful to reverse. We not only want but expect companies to bleed millions if not billions to please us.
Sony needs to start making a profit. Whether this is a reasonable price will be decided on how well this product sells, not by how much money they are making on each individual unit sold.

There you go.. is there really any point in getting a Go then?
That's what I remember as well.Linkified said:249.99, Trenton even said that on stage.
Evlar said:In my opinion, compared with its competition for devices that perform some or all of those functions, the price is too high in the US and crazy high in the UK. Apparently a lot of people in this thread agree. And, honestly, I don't think this is an obscure judgment call- the marketing departments at Sony, at least, should have come to a similar conclusion. Which begs the question: If they really want to sell this thing why not offer it cheaper?
Cruzader said:Ok thanx for the minimum wage numbers.
Price is insane.
Even still, it's function-wise, basically the same, it can't be more than double, it's obscene pricing.Tobor said:How is this even remotely relevant? The Go is being billed as a premium PSP. Minimum wagers aren't the target demographic.
This is the young adult professional PSP, while the 3000 remains for the tweenie market.

How much extra do you expect to pay for PS3 Slim?Tobor said:That's subjective. Weight, size, and getting rid of UMD is a huge upgrade IMO. As for the price, yeah, that seems high, but like everyone else has said, you need to wait for confirmation.
