Retronauts Podcast Thread

I had never heard this Henry Gilbert guy on a podcast before, but he was great. I hope he comes back soon for another appearance.

He's on the Laser Time network. Bob was on two episodes recently - one about the whole TenApel thing and the argument about whether the negative acts or opinions of an artist should affect the viewer's opinion work and one about WB cartoons.

Gilbert is also on Vidjagame Apocalypse, which is focused on video games, and Cape Crisis about comic books.

They are pretty good except for the bed of music that plays over the whole episode. It is pretty grating.

Retronauts Volume III Episode 5: The History of Video Game Violence

Violence: it’s what’s for dinner. Well, maybe not, but smashing faces and killing dudes has been the primary mode of expression for video games since they gained the ability to depict the human form. And though Retronauts features the scariest demographic, at least in terms of sensationalist media scapegoating — we are three white guys who grew up frolicking in digital geysers of blood and gore, after all — this episode should prove we’re at least well-adjusted enough to have a 90-minute conversation without even a hint of neck-throttling. (We saved that for the after party.)

With this installment on video game violence, I decided to take a look at how each successive scandal thus far displays a society coming to terms with a new form of media, as they did with novels, radio, television, movies, and possibly holo-porn in the not-too-distant future. Of course, this isn’t to say that complaints about video game violence don’t have any merit, but unfortunately, the most vocal outcries tend to stem from a healthy combination of fear and ignorance. That said, we tried to be fair and balanced in the non-ironic sense of the term, even though a lot of this episode is dedicated to laughing at clueless opportunists who sought to blame video games as an easy answer for society’s ills. And yes, we do talk about a certain repugnant figure with the initials “J.T.”

Special thanks go out to GamesRadar’s Henry Gilbert, who did a great job at guesting on both of the episodes he recorded with us. Be sure to check out his comic book podcast Cape Crisis on the always awesome Laser Time network!

Either that or it will be him and whatever local people he can find wherever he ends up moving to recording in a different studio for his weeks.

I bumped into Jeremy at PAX and he didn't go "Ha ha, I don't have to do Wrestlenauts anymore. Later Jerkface". He's still committed to the project and has ideas and plans for what to do after the year is over.

*Really* enjoyed the Wario episode - just catching up on listening now, and that is the best Retronauts since... I think, The Simpsons videogames retrospective, for me...

I liked the violence in games episode - I can't believe how much stuff it made me remember about my childhood that I had tried to forget. My parents never cared for video games, so all the drama about Mortal Kombat and so on just made it more difficult for me to enjoy the hobby.

Anyone else think it was weird that, in the last episode, they pointed out that they had balanced the sound levels better (and Ray admitted that he and Jeremy were speaking closer to their microphones) but in this one Bob was the only one at a normal volume level again?

Bob's story about being profiled after Columbine was amazing, would really like to know more.
surprised there was no mention of Postal in the episode, unless i missed a fleeting remark. There was quite a fuss about it at the time.

they really need to put more audio compression on these podcasts if no one is gonna talk close enough to their mics

Jeremy always sounds like he is in another room with a box on his head, which is kind of annoying because then Bob comes blasting on and I have to constantly adjust the volume while driving. :p

I have wondered this FOREVER.

At the beginning of the famed Survival Horror podcast, Sharkey starts the podcast by saying "WE CAME IN." WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT I MUST KNOW

They started recording the podcast with just Sharkey,Shane and Kohler. Jenn Frank was late. Retro news and the intro were probably done at the end of the recording hours, thus Sharkey said: "We came in...."

I still think I don't understand it. I get that they record nonlinearly, but why would he say "we came in" randomly to start the podcast? He should say something like, "We'll splice it in here," or, "Okay, we come in here." I MUST KNOW THE SECRET

Jenn.

But yeah, this is correct. The start of the podcast is actually the end of the recording. They talk about it at the end of the actual podcast. Full quote is, "Isn't this where... we came in?"

I loved that about the episode. The recording itself started around 16 minutes in when Sharkey says "I'm sure I'll love reliving this again and again and again." It was just edited to be all topsy-turvy.

the survival horror episode and the Sega saturn episodes are my favorite ones. I learned about so many games I hadn't heard of. also: "Flaming grandpa rape" ;)

“In what could be the most John Stossel-heavy Retronauts episode of all time (we hope), your favorite classic gaming buddies and special guest Henry Gilbert (of GamesRadar) take a look at how the media reacted to Nintendo conquering a generation of children in the late ’80s. Sit back, relax, and get ready to hear middle-aged adults growing progressively crankier about how kids can’t stop playing those damned vidya games.”

Have you ever heard of Nintendo?

I really liked this episode, but man, people have been really complaining about it on twitter and on the website. Retronauts has always been about the opinions of the hosts and not 100% unbiased facts, so I'm a little surprised by the reactions. I suppose once you barely touch politics, all bets are off.

Did not know about the Phoenix Wright orchestra album till the music breaks on the violence episode. I also enjoyed the episode. My life has been doubly enriched.

Right, like I said: Retronauts has never been completely about facts. Every episode is chock-full of opinions and personal experiences and Bob is free to express his feelings on this or any other topic.

I don't think people are necessarily having a problem with him bashing Stossel and O'Reily, it's just in the clip he posted for everyone to watch, most people aren't seeing what's so bad about it -- and thus not understanding where the venom is coming from with Bob that's being directed at Stossel in the episode. That's the disconnection right now. It's not just 'you guys are being liberal I'm unsubscribing!'

If it didn't make me sound like a complete jerk, I'd point out to Bob that this is an interesting counterpoint to his problems with Penny Arcade in the last few weeks.

If you follow him on Twitter, you have seen that he is upset that some web sites have not given any coverage to the Penny Arcade story last week. He also wrote that story for Gemeological Society about Dough TenApel where he was upset about things TenApel has said about homosexuals.

In both cases, people had publicized opinions that others criticized for various reasons. Granted, they were both conservative, while Bob is much more of a leftist.

Now, Bob is in the same situation. He was on a podcast giving opinions that some people disagree with and is getting some criticism.

I'd say that he is taking it pretty well, but I wonder if it gives him any perspective on how his comments on their opinions is similar to the people criticizing him now.

It does seem unfair that he is getting comments that he has been unfair to Christians in the last two episodes. It is clear to me that the comments are not meant as blanket statements, and he is using "Christian" as shorthand for socially conservative fundamentalists. Although, I guess that it unclear to others.

Personally, I had no problem with the episode. The videogame violence episode was great, and the latest Pocket was fine. I am going to Retronauts for the personalities and weather I agree with them or not, I appreciate them for doing it.

I'm pretty sure there is no way that I could express those thoughts in the Retronauts comments without coming off as sanctimonious and holier-than-thou, and I'm not totally sure that I was successful doing it here.

o reilly deserves any venom he gets, and PA trying to ruin their own brand/reopen wounds is worth talking about, more than Bob taking a few inevitable shots given the subject at hand

Check the comments for the last pocket episode - some people are complaining that Bob was preaching his left-wing political views and being mean to poor John Stossel and Bill O'Reilly.

I do think your post reads very level-headed and reasonable, for what it's worth.

I love this show, but Anamanaguchi is ear torture. I can't skip the intro fast enough.

I like Anamanaguchi but the intro sounds kind of a mailed in effort and is way too upbeat for the type of podcast. The original was one of the best ever, maybe the best ever intro for a podcast.

Other than that and the low volume level of Jeremy everything's been great. I don't mind the political stuff; you'd get little bits of political banter here and there in the old ones as well. I think.

These guys aren't robots, and Libertarians / Bill O'Reilly / John Stossel are easy targets that shouldn't offend too many people. It's like getting upset at someone making fun of the tea party, Al Sharpton or Aaron Sorkin or Anthony Weiner.

Interesting topic, will give this a listen after work.

I always loved the show, but I actually think its getting even better now that they sometimes do take some social and political views into the mix. After all, not even gaming exist in a vakuum, so this is an important part of the context for their personal experiences which was always what this show was about. Looking forward to listen to the new episode!

The Super Off Road talk had me confused. "You couldn't spin the wheel like crazy" and "The home ports were great" Is the complete opposite of reality.

You needed to spin that wheel like crazy to win and the lack of a wheel to spin like crazy is why the home ports were bad. I remember buying Midway Arcade Treasures 2 or whatever it was called on PS2 and being excited because it had Super Off Road and a rom hack version with all new tracks. Only to be completely disappointed because the controls were terrible.

Oh well, we got a Razor Ramon reference. Wrestlenauts foreshaddowing!

Has anyone heard any word on backer rewards? It's kind of been all quiet on that front, I haven't heard back on an inquiry I sent about it. I'm chill, just wondering what's going on there.

There was a Kickstarter upgrade on August 7

Basically, we haven't forgotten that we're on the hook, and in just the past week or two, we've made a renewed effort to get it all done. At the risk of slinging excuses, the launch of the podcast and the almost-immediate trip to the Seattle Retro Gaming Expo threw us off-balance for a little while. So right now, we're pushing forward on producing the relatively easier-to-produce merch (shirts, etc.; thanks again to our friends at Fangamer for giving us a hand there), and doing pre-planning on the more custom stuff (namely the DVD and book projects), which will naturally follow a bit later.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...onauts-your-favorite-classic-gaming-pod/posts

Granted that was on August 7. My guess is that the physical rewards will be very, very late. Jeremy is moving across the country in a week, and according to his twitter, Bob is interviewing for jobs.

Even in that update, there is no mention of the DVD, Retronauts.com articles, book, video segments or custom art. There have been a handful of live streams from Bob and Ray, but not for a while.

They are all really busy people, but it seems like this stuff might have fallen by the wayside for them. I do not regret throwing $20 behind the Kickstarter and would still do it again. But it looks like they might have bitten of more than they could chew.

Not super far into the music episode yet, but I'm enjoying it. The backer guest is doing a really good job of staying involved and being knowledgeable.

Well I'm not losing faith just yet. Hopefully its just delays that all this will introduce.
