Ryse Confirmed 900p, was always 900p...

Using the up scaler for AA? What does this mean? And the frame buffer is 1080p? Isn't that used for the final output? I'm confused.

At what point did console gamers catch the PC gaming itch for res/fps?

Folks are buying graphics cards that alone cost the price of a console bundle that wont give 1080 60fps for games.

Why, because it is not the only performance metric that matters. Resolution is 1 of about 20 video settings for most games.

Looking at the triangle/poly count for Ryse the game still looks crazy good. Crytek are going to bleed the system dry for resources and they are going to make IQ paramount for your experience.

How can you be angry about performance metrics and expect consoles to cost what they do?

I'm worried that If they start compromising the resolution now, they will continue to do so later on during the console life cycle just because of pushing graphics. Just do what you can with 1080p.
Every gen is like this I think. Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube ran at 320 x 240 for instance but we still got plenty of 480p games. Hell, some even went higher (Soul Calibur 2 on Xbox = 720p). Same with PS3/360.

It's only if things get to "PS Vita" level of bad you should start worrying but I don't think the circumstances are the same.

Up scaled, native 900p. Ryse has played on the hardware since E3, and the hardware hasn't got any less powerful.

Some people assumed it was 1080p because it looks good, but 900p does look good.

It was also confirmed to Digital Foundry by some staff at E3, further proof that booth reps don't know anything.

The textures look kinda funky in 900p, but I can't remember turning anything down for it. Do you have any upscaled 900p comparisons?
From that BF4 thread.

PGR3 was sub-hd. PGR4 was not. I think Cyrsis got a bump in resolution from Crysis 2 to 3 too.

CryTek has been a hit and miss developer so far.

Crysis >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Far Cry >>>> Crysis 2 >>>>>> Crysis 3

One masterpiece and a lot of "kinda meh" games. Can you accept that as your legacy, Cervat?

I'm surprised some people can believe a single word from Yerli.

Also, excusatio non petita accusatio manifiesta. Repeating a thousand times that there was no downgrade is suspicious to say the least.

I have a "I can take it or leave it" attitude towards Ryse but what worries me is what it says about CryTek and the future Crysis 4 which I had hoped would be a return to Crysis 1 now that the console concessions shouldn't be so great with next-gen RAM amounts.

PC Tech has just gotten dramatically better in the past 7 years.

There are 6TFLOP GPU's out there now, with 64 ROPS and all that jazz.

Games 2 years from now, on the multiplatform / PC end, will look a ton better though. Now that PC developers can work the law of averages for these consoles and the average PC to be around 2-4GB of GDDR5 instead of 1GB as it is now, we will see PC / Multiplatform teams being able to up their fidelity quite a bit.

Consoles are what they are. Consoles are simply unable to go above the 400-500$ mark and they are limited in their power output. So, they are limited.

Still, games are going to look fantastic. I think people just heard the term " next - gen " and thought the consoles would somehow be able to go toe to toe with the best of the best of the PC world.

Exclusives maybe, but never multiplats. Look at Second Son for example. Show me a PC open world game that looks anywhere close to as brilliant as that game atm.

Here's a better 1080p/900p upscaled comparison from Eurogamer.

900p

1080p
.

There is a noticeable difference, however at least to me, it's fairly subtle and not nearly as bad as that Metro 2033 screenshot.

I don't understand why people care so much though, Ryse looks pretty damn good regardless. I'm primarily a PC gamer and I'm still in awe at how good it looks.

NO COMPROMISE... except 900p.

What is a compromise anyway? Should we take a dump on any game that runs at 30fps? What about games that are 720p? Or games that are 60fps but with frames drop? Do we need to create thread pointing those "flaws"? And if Ryse started has a 360 game I guess it was a 720p game at mad so the fact that it's 900p right now is an upgrade. :p

Don't forget Warface..warface..warface..warface. Also pretty horrible to say the least.

Depends what game, others seem to get a pass for similar 'design decisions'.

If it was always 900p upscaled...then who cares?

The game looks incredible before and after knowing that. It changes nothing....well, outside of my surprise that 900p looks that good on my 1080p screen.

Interesting that the game was always 900p and surprising no-one noticed until it was announced.

Update...

So there's this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1RvxnrqHcw

Shows the difference between the E3 demo and how the game looked in later presentations. No idea as to where the latter comparison picture is from, could be from the stream or direct feed...

Did he just use 1600x900 and no compromise in the same paragraph?

Intresting conversation if it did take place....

"Yes everything we showed at E3 and Gamescom was on kits. From my point of view the development is coming along well and with the optimizations we have put in, I am pretty confident the final game will look better than what we showed at E3. I even had to open the cupboard to prove it to some guys from Guerilla who didn’t believe me. At the demo stations our kits were on top of the cupboard directly connected to the screens, so no way we could have done anything else other than run on kits.”

The methodology in the post which claimed to confirm 1080p native in earlier materials is flawed.

This is a 1080p B/W divide.

This is a 900p B/W divide.

This is a 900p B/W divide upscaled to 1080p. This is a zoom-in on a 50 pixel wide section of that upscaled image.

With one corresponding step per line. Unless I misunderstood something about his process, the methodology from the post being discussed doesn't prove or disprove anything.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say as well. I'm confused.

Yes but if the shaders perform Anti-Aliasing and other effects on the upscaled resolution instead of the 900p then you need to redo your test to see that difference as well.

Two masterpieces. FC was brilliant back in the day, not sure how well it holds up today (will hopefully find out if/when they release FC HD on PS360), but it was one of the best FPS games back in the day.

Crysis tho. Game's on a whole other level. Predator sim if ever there was one.

so nice to get straight honesty from the actual developers. Both Guerrila and Crytek have been honest about their compromises...it's really refreshing.

Am I doing this right???

Far Cry? Terrible terrible game.

Far Cry was immensely graphically impressive for its time and after Crysis it is certainly their second best game.

But those fucking Trigens.....

Pretty much agree with this and Crysis wasn't even that good, Warhead was even worse...

You have to be able to count the step, otherwise you can't do pixel counting. Your image is perfectly anti-aliased while a rendered game is not (even with some form of AA).
Though i don't know if the post AA is applied after the upscale this method of counting become irrelevant.

Yeah, the trigens were terrible. Almost as bad as the aliens in C1.

This seems to be a running theme with Crytek games, they don't know how to end games at all. Crysis 1 with the aliens, FC with the trigens, Ryse with the...?

You know what's hilarious about this part?

Inherently, when you see that note, you immediately think it means that what you're seeing looks worse than how the final product will look -- i.e. that the message is a "we still have to polish some stuff" disclaimer -- but in this case, it's the complete opposite.

Yup exactly. Not only does it cover their asses, but it also gives the impression that the final game will look even better.
