Sausage Party: Review Thread

The amount of completely cretinous "proves animation isn't just for kids!!" reviews makes me not really buy this out of hand. I'm interested though.

I'm happy to see a major animated film do something different than family entertainment.

Of course, people will get the wrong idea, again, and make animated comedy movies with crude humor instead of realizing it is possible to make a non family animated movie and have it sell, as long as it's done correctly.

That's always how it's been regarding western animation though, and not just in movies. What's sad is that in the early/mid nineties it seemed there was a chance for it to grow with shows like Spawn and Aeon Flux.

Looks like Oscar will be in the cards for Rogen this time around
Let's not get carried away now. It's an especially strong year for animated films even if you discount the crap films like Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets that have made some 700 million dollars domestically.

Zootopia is a gem. Moana is on tap for later this year. The Coraline / ParaNorman crew have a new flick coming out next week. That's stiff competition.

Oscar should have his ceremony every month. There's so many five bag quality movies to award.

I thought the trailer looked awful, but glad the reviews are good. Definitely plan on watching it just because of who wrote it and who's in it.

Is Kubo animated or stop-motion?

Yeah : /

We got a new chance coming up with Samurai Jack renewal/finale. I hope the show does very well and we build off of it.

Stop-motion, which is a form of animation. Animation doesn't just cover 2D and CGI, there's stop motion, shadow puppetry, pinscreen animation, cutout animation, and more.

Whatcha do on it?
If I had to guess, I'd say he was an Animator.

This just feels like it's following the post-Simpsons trend of "LOL, NOT FOR THE KIDDIES" animation, which in my opinion, is boring and a long-dead horse. People are just going to take the wrong lessons from this again, especially in the wake of Family Guy.

Here's the one (and only) Oscar this film will win...

The trailer looked mediocre, but the reviews are giving me hope. I wonder if they are giving it the Chilango treatment for the Mexican dub.

Cool, Rogen is very hit and miss for me. Neighbors was one of the only movies ever that I turned off because it was just too bad. I'm really over his 'now I'm stoned, now I'm doing something disgusting, hilaaaarious' lazy auto pilot comedy. On the other hand, This is the End was genuinely a creative setup and one of the funniest movies in recent times. I thought this movie would be one of the former, but the writer is the same as the latter. Color me intrigued.

I understand that Oscar has mis-stepped with his picks the last couple of years, but I have good word from inside sources that a write-in campaign will bring Oscar gold to Mr. Rogen. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a new franchise in the vein of Bond or Hobbit and we see 20 or 30 more in the next 5 years.

Consider me surprised. The humor in the trailers seemed really lousy. Like, they weren't sure if something would be funny on it's own, so they embellished it with a bunch of swearing as if that's supposed to make it funnier.

But maybe those were just bad trailers. Hardly the first time that's happened.

I remember the interview with Howard Stern, been hyped for this movie since then, and it looks like they nailed it. Can't wait.

I thought it sounded horrible when he was on Stern, but I like what I saw and hope it succeeds. It could be this generation's Heavy Metal.

I'm surprised, trailers made it look like hot garbage, but its Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg film, so...I'll still pass.

Not a fan of their humor.

I've mentioned this in the past on here but I saw this movie at a test screening 4 years ago (maybe longer, can't remember!). It was 30 seconds of finished animation with everything else as animatics / storyboards. It was, literally, the worst thing I'd ever seen in my life. The current version of the movie sounds almost completely different; one heck of a turnaround. As far as I could tell the crowd at the screening savaged the movie (the group I was with certainly did in any event) and it seems like the criticism helped. My test screening experience was so bad I'm not sure I want to check out the finished film but it's certainly got me extremely curious. My memory is so hazy of the test screening I'm not sure how much of a comparison I could do, though!

Great stuff, can't wait to see this in the cinema.

On a side note, anyone know when this is releasing in Ireland/UK?

August 12th release for US but didn't see anything regarding European release.

lol, nice one bruvva!

I was cautious after enjoying the trailers.
Now I'm in.

Also...

when an all-out war on human consumers gives way to a pansexual orgy any pornographer would be proud to have imagined.

This is one of those times where I'm not even upset to be semi-spoiled.
I have to see this...

Rottentomatoes counts reviews of unfinished reels? I guess this isn't a picture going for wow factor with finished visuals but at least keep the RT to reviews of the theatrical cut.

After seeing this Sausage Party, I had in mind a different kind of party, an Oscar Party. The CGI world was not as beautiful as the one Mr Bilbo adventures in, but it made me take an extra look into my pantry when I got home.

I give it five bags of popcorn and one of those red igloo lunchboxes, to keep all of your new refrigerator friends cold on the way home from the movie!

now that official reviews are out. I'll say I liked it. it is a bit gratuitous with one of its final scenes to the point of absurdity.

I saw it back in June during one of those test screenings.

On one hand, I'd love to see western animation branch out of family/kids films.

On the other hand, Hollywood will use this to make 1200 trippy stoner comedies ...

Wow, thought for sure this movie was made by Seth MacFarlane and not Rogen. An animated movie with a title like "Sausage Party" screamed MacFarlane to me...

Anyway, this is surprising.

I'm going to buck the trend here and say that I liked the look of this from the trailers =/

Glad it's getting great reviews

I don't know why, I but have loved almost every Seth Rogen movie ever. I'm amazed at the level he has sustained since what? Knocked Up 9 years ago? What other comedic actor/writer has sustained this level of success?

I've been excited to see this since I heard the concept.

You like the one he has a jewish mother too? Whatever that film is.

My favorites are This is the End and Pineapple Exp (which is not really a Rogen movie)

Im seriously surprised, the premise is stupid, the trailers looked like shit and it reeks of "immature family guy style humor", interesting to see this reception.

Im still not seeing it in theaters tho.

Having to shave the pubes off pita bread to avoid an NC-17 rating is begging for a large audience. I'm seeing it Friday, no doubt.

Are you serious? Now I want the unrated Blu-Ray.

On a side note: I checked my local theater online and so far not seeing a lot of seats/tickets bought yet. I think word of mouth is going to be strong after the first showings if the reviews are any indication.
