I'd wager different devs have different priorities
Probably by the end of the gen the usual pattern will be
Most third party- Xbox sex runs at better framerates and resolutions/ severity of the difference depends on who you ask, ps5 has shorter load time, severity again depends on who you ask.
Third party games that make exceptional use of the ps5 ssd speed, better assets streaming reduces lod transitions and makes for a more stable appearance, severity again depends on who you ask.
third party games that make better use of the xbox cpu/gpu, ps5 might be missing effects- again severity will depend on who you ask.
all competent games will look great as far as I'm concerned, though I personally have no plan to buy them for at least a few years so there is time to shake out at least some of the hardware flaws.

But the architecture over the Jaguar cannot be understated.
Pretty much, it is why I don't get why people want or would want to settle for 30FPS when the console(s) are able to push past 60.
OT: Have hand it to Microsoft and I always felt this way, they have a interesting way to find hidden gems, be it Bastion, Ori, Cuphead, The Last Night and alike.

The only reason the SSD is the main focus of conversation is because it's the main (if not only) advantage of the PS5. If the console designs were flipped between Sony and Microsoft, no one would shut up about the TFLOPS and the velocity architecture instead.

I get it. Sony loves to do exotic things with their console. The cell on the PS3, the super fast SSD on the PS5. Just remember how Sony hyped the cell and how that turned out. I'm not saying the exact same thing will happen again. What I am saying is, that skepticism on PR talk is healthy.

I'd reckon it comes down to what you're trying to achieve as a developer? And what kind of game you're making, no?

Oh i have no agenda. Dig through my post history. You post shit like you're getting paid to do it. If you're not you're missing out. Your agenda though is crystal clear. Keep up the good fight.
Paid for what? I literally quoted from the article without any commentary. And sometimes commentary is given to explain your points. You trying to pass a normal news post about an interview as console wars and accusing me of being paid sounds more like an agenda to me.

A CPU spends many of its time decompressing data from the drive to the RAM. Do you really think that the SX has the advantage here because of a 8.6% boost?

Anyways. It’s been a harsh generation for coders this one. I can totally understand the guy. We came from processors that run circles around their equivalent counterparts in PC (as stated from a dev here, in GAF) to deal with the cheapest CPUs Sony and MS could find. Now they don’t have something fancy as with the PS360 era, but at least is a proper PC CPU.

Seeing the performance in a iPad Pro I was betting in someone being forward thinking and jump to an ARM desktop class processor but maybe not everyone is Apple, which is more than a year ahead of the competition. Next (next) gen will surely be about ARMs and then backwards compatibility will be an issue again.

Oof some of this shit has become unbearable now. I wish I could fast forward to this time next year so I could already be playing some of my games of choice on this hardware and skip all this bullshit.

It’s beyond tiring now,

I didn't accuse you of anything your persecution complex is kicking in. I stated if you're not being paid you should be. If anything it was an insinuation not an accusation hit up dictionary.com for the difference.

And that's what we call damage control
Why would a 3rd party damage control it?

The only thing I could see them being upset about is everyone calling it cutscenes, when it was in game graphics, and I would be insulted as well.

Lol if all the shit they gave MS for not showing gameplay and all they showed was actual gameplay.

My guess is I would be able to have fun with and be impressed by both consoles.
I am willing to eat crow on that...

It is a change of pace from when you are taking Xbox PR and building posts around them highlighting all of the key marketing speach keywords one by one.

Seriously though, in this case the developer said something correct and non controversial you are right. It is also clear the way it was framed in the thread title that it was meant to put down the importance of the faster SSD which the actual full quote inside the post did not actual back up.

Why would a 3rd party damage control it?
Not sure, what is the excuse they normally use to hand wave away when a small third party says something positive about PS5’s strengths over XSX? Paid for or clueless or lacking final devkits for both?

I don't see how an extra 100Mhz on the CPU cores is better than over double SSD speed(not to mention latency).
XSX like Xbox One is also running under a full virtualisation layer (taking a small percent of performance, but giving great flexibility when thinking of backwards and forward compatibility of games and OS software features).

However in CPU bounded scenarios the XO over-performs the PS4. So whatever their solution is, it’s more efficient than the Sony OS. Hence their stability updates, I guess.

Which Xbox though? The One S with yet another CPU frequency bump or the very original clockspeed that in few games people thought there was a CPU difference in (sometimes mid attributed, did not really make a trend).

Still, stability updates probably include lots of internal developer facing SDK changes which I would want them to shout out about more publicly yeah.

Of course. Either CPU is a MASSIVE upgrade over a Jaguar.

Why should the SSD be of particular interest to smaller budget games?

He’s not wrong, these CPU’s are more than a generational leap, like several generational leaps compared to the obsolete Jaguars. Fast SSD’s are great and important but I think all of this super crazy fast SSD madness has kind of made everyone forget how crazy and good these CPU’s will be next gen and how they will improve our gaming experience and give developers a lot more stuff to play with.
You are both wrong! The truth is both the CPU jump AND SSD (compared to having old mechanical drives) are equal in the generation jump that we'll see. It'll would have been stupid to have one without the other.

I don't care about the 'my dad's tougher than your dad' nonsense, but I didn't realise Scorn had decided to go Xbox exclusive.

It always kind of insulting to us as potential customers when creators are willing to take bribes to keep their product off other platforms like that.

? What are you talking about? I’m not saying SSD isn’t important and nor is the article, I’m saying that the CPU upgrade is overshadowed by the SSD hype, but it’s just as important if not a bit more.

Aint no one trying to downplay the SSD, or say it’s not important but let’s not get tunnel vision and forget what else these consoles are packing that are truly beyond a singular generational upgrade.

this GEN is really GUNS BLAZING, this is a true stand-off situation between two Giants in this industry and I wonder How the Switch will win again.

“Everyone is touting the SSD as the next big thing, and yes SSDs will help a lot with loading and moving assets, but the biggest culprit that is creating problems in the current generation is the CPU,” Peklar explained to us. “That’s where the biggest difference compared to current generation will come from.”

Thank you.

Does it really make a huge difference between the 2 console
The CPU is a bit faster on XSX. Both XSX and PS5 CPUs are a massive upgrade over what we got this gen.

But I disagree. The I/O technological jump will benefit both consoles and PC.
Console CPUs are just catching up to PC.

Note, I said I/O, not SSD. Conflating the two is what is not letting some people understand it.

Haha hilarious stuff :messenger_kissing_smiling:

It'll all depend on the GAME whether SSD is more important (because of asset-streaming, like in UE5 games) or raw CPU and/or GPU power. Simple as that.

btw. just wondering, isn't the CPU of the PS5 and the XSEX very close to each other? Like almost to the point where it is ridiculous to base anything on the difference?

When UE5 becomes the norm, PS5 will have a huge advantage concerning asset-streaming (Nanite) and this directly impacts image quality.

CPU and SSD are the biggest upgrades, yes.

But the constant focus on what Studios with ten man teams think about the hardware in next gen consoles is reaching parody levels. They don't have the man numbers, the pedigree, the pipeline or the budget to insert themselves into the conversation around what next gen consoles means for big games.

The CPU is important, so it's a good thing both next gen machines have a good CPU. Yet a CPU is only as good as the devs you have at your disposal to use it......I think now that the CPU's are great on both sides, the SSD is indeed the gamechanger as can be seen in that UE5 demo and perhaps we will see even more impressive use of the SSD's from Sony first party.

PS5 faster I/O SSD sounds more for making development easier.
While SeX all round more powerful hardware allows developers to push better graphics.

Everything is a damage control when it does not match what you want to hear.
I addressed you so I expected a reply. If you warrior as hard as you do expect snide remarks. It goes both ways.
Seems like you wanted a different reply. Too bad you will only hear what I want, not what you want.

Seems like not supporting your plastic box of choice is "PR".
building posts around them highlighting all of the key marketing speach keywords one by one.
Isnt that basically your circlejerk in a nutshell ?
It is also clear the way it was framed in the thread title that it was meant to put down the importance of the faster SSD which the actual full quote inside the post did not actual back up.
Complaining about posts not being framed to highlight your cause is the "PR" you speak of. You are not in any way answerable to how a post should be worded and what counts as "PR".
Not sure, what is the excuse they normally use to hand wave away when a small third party says something positive about PS5’s strengths over XSX? Paid for or clueless or lacking final devkits for both?
Difference being he has the dev kit. No need to use additive conjunctions.
XSX like Xbox One is also running under a full virtualisation layer (taking a small percent of performance, but giving great flexibility when thinking of backwards and forward compatibility of games and OS software features).
This is simply not true, but it is affirmative to your rhetoric and that includes "muh bottlenecks".

The problem i have is that i hear all those things and the reality is: PS4 10800/30 FPS are ported at 4k/30 fps. We all here already have a OneX for that (shure it's not perfect but it's ok).

The narrative does not fit reality... (yet ?). If x or y were so powerfull, it's something we would have seen. Right now those hardwares are a joke in the internet. People are LAUGHING at next gens. And the answer is: more talks about power. They better are, they better show (ps5 has somehow done it) either it's not going to end well.

The only thing remotely interesting about Scorn is the art-style, and that's just a well executed copy of Giger. It seems otherwise a fairly standard UE4-based indie, meaning that these guys aren't working close to the cutting-edge of tech. and as such their expertise is limited to using a single middleware engine.

That they've gone exclusively with Xbox only recently is pretty much a confirmation that their experience with next-gen tech is minimal, so their input on the matter is pretty irrelevant.

So no excuse for shitty AI this gen.
With what could ML do and it's support horsepower is definitely there, but the issue is while devs are going to care and most importantly if more skilled Ai is fun. I don't think we had an issue of Ai, because of lack of power (because how many enemies you fight at one time anyway)...
