EDIT: Actually, people who've went to see it should answer this question. But they did mention the game sound effects were in the movie.

Being visuals from a concert, I wouldn't be surprised if those were temporal sprites or even crop outs. Check Zabka's post to see more of Paul Robertson's work. Dude is a 2D legend.Jibril said:and low quality sprites.
Animation looks great though

Yeah, it's a real travesty a game based on a comic with tons of references to NES, SNES, and Genesis games doesn't have stunning hand-drawn HD graphics.Jibril said:and low quality sprites.

I think this is the perfect direction to take with a Scott Pilgrim game.
Jibril said:You know, was thinking this as well. But would have preferred only some elements of the game to be in that format. Imagine if the entire comic looked like that, following the same logic
Though, as someone's already mentioned above, the game might take a turn for high quality sprites.

Volume 6. Movie. Game. *brain as'plodes*
Yeah, but a comic isn't a video game. Comics almost have to be dynamic. This is a video game. I think it makes perfect sense that a video game based on a comic based on old video games should look like that. Hell, the back of one of the volumes is all isometric sprites. If O'Malley made a SP game himself, I guarantee you he'd use 8/16-bit looking sprites.Jibril said:Imagine if the entire comic looked like that, following the same logic![]()

...The sound effect words are indeed littered throughout the film, but often rather subtly, at least as opposed to the giant THRAK!s of the fight scenes.
Now, I know relatively nothing of the comic series. The film itself is more colorful than the trailer leads one to believe. What I loved, besides the very obvious Edgar Wright style humor strewn throughout, is that the entire film operates on video game logic. I assume the series is like this as well. The fight scenes are insanely over the top and drawn out until Scott wins, the enemy turns into a heap of coins he casually collects, then appears as if he is just a little tired after the whole ordeal. The film is like a 7 tiered video game boss fight. A lot of wonderful video game touches, such as the opening universal logo being entirely pixelated and the standard theme being programmed with NES-like sound. Also, at one point Scott needs to escape an uncomfortable social situation and retreats to the bathroom where the soothing Legend of Zelda title screen music plays. He pees and a "pee-life bar" slowly diminishes. But what I love is that you can see the reflection of the bar in the bathroom mirror. Simple, silly, but wonderful.
The film also understands how hipster-aimed the story and characters are and attempts to have fun with the fact. Brandon Routh is a telekinetic vegan who attended vegan academy. "How do you have these powers?" asks Scott. "I'm Vegan. We're better than everyone else". Again, simple and silly, but works wonderfully in context.

I read somewhere, possibly even here on GAF, that there are animated segments in the movie. Is that true? (Feel free to spoiler tag the answer or even PM me if you'd like)
