Damn, dude. You're trying way too hard.

Trying what too hard? I've said this exact same thing about Speed Racer before even a shred of information came out about Scott Pilgrim. To compare the two is frankly insulting to Scott Pilgrim.

Speed Racer as a cartoon was terrible. Speed Racer as a movie was an affront to humanity, damning all who watched it. It's not a message that evolved out of defense of Scott Pilgrim either: check the Speed Racer thread. I've been shitting on that garbage film since day one. It was one of the worst movies I've seen in the past ten years (Norbit and THE HAPPENING are the only two that are worse), and I've seen thousands. It's not a moment of pride to discuss it, it is what it is.

Scott Pilgrim, on the other hand, IS brilliant. Some people try to discredit it (it's not WATCHMEN hurr hurr), but they are attempting two entirely different things. It's one of the only comics or books I've ever seen actually nail the references without seeming forced or awkward; it's a love letter to everything that is I love. It's no wonder it clicks so well. It's fucking amazingly well written.

So when I hear someone raise an objection about how I can possibly like Scott Pilgrim but not Speed Racer, it's more than a little bullshit. They're comparable in no sense of the word.

If the line 'HE'S HEATING UP' isn't in this movie (preferably the original voice sample) I will be very disappointed.

I agree that Speed Racer is overrated, but come the fuck on. Its a good movie. I'm looking forward to Scott Pilgrim like you wouldn't believe, but how we want from being hyped to trashing Speed Racer is beyond me.

It's Amirox. Anything he doesn't love he ultra-hates.

I fucking loved the Speed Racer movie, and i fucking loved Speed Racer with a passion when i was a kid. Its a kids movie, the cartoon/anime was for kids, as a kid movie, it fucking works and i love it.

Now, Scott Pilgrim is a totally different deal and i dont even know why people are comparing them, sure they look alike in a wacky with colorful visuals and "PLOP" "WHUD" "WHIP" "CRACK" way, but thats where it ends im guessing.

False as always. Generalizations are fun!

Darksiders I thought was merely decent, to list a recent example. I think many films are only ok (I thought Crazy Heart was just average, to list a recent example in film).

Speed Racer was not in these categories. When I spend money on something, though, I earn the right to trash it if it wastes my time.

And for the purposes of teaching people HOW TO FOLLOW CONVERSATIONS 1.0...

...we went from A to B because of this comment, completely uninitiated by me:

I don't see how you can cum powerfully over this, yet be the biggest Speed Racer hater on this forum

I didn't mention Speed Racer or anything. That is how we went from A to B. Comments this retarded demand responses.

OK sorry about that. But can you please explain to me why Speed Racer is so horrible.

:/ I've done so in many other threads but that honestly would derail this thread way more than it already is. I just wanted to respond to this idea that somehow liking Scott Pilgrim is at massive odds with hating Speed Racer.

Not avoiding but being topical. Question was still Scott Pilgrim related, but running off on a purely Speed Racer tangent would not be.

Speed Racer is fucking awesome, but let us not discuss it in this thread about Scott Pilgrim, which is not really comparable to this film except that it has very stylized visuals; even then, I would say that this is more like a lighthearted Sin City or 300 in terms of visuals in the sense that it is trying to evoke the art style of the comic on which it is based, whereas Speed Racer featured visuals that were not really based on anything (though the movie is probably the biggest eyegasm of the last decade in terms of its visuals).

it's high fidelity for nerds born in the 80s

did you grow up playing video games? do you like women and relationships?
As a card-carrying nerd born in the 80s who enjoys both games and relationships (with women!) I would like to subscribe to your newsletter, sir. Thank you; you've done a better job explaining this phenomenon to me than just about anyone.

The first book is kinda lame, the next ones are much better. It's really about funny, awesome characters with great personalities. That's easily the best part of the comic. The action stuff I never cared for. And the trailer shows nothing of this. And Michael Cera fucking sucks dong. So it's an issue there, with the trailer.

Like I said before, I would much rather have an animated movie...
Agree a thousand times over about Cera. First book is kind of weak, then? Certainly seemed that way. OK, I will now spend the rest of my day hovering over the Amazon Prime 1-click button (...or working).

PS: I adore Speed Racer and feel people should excommunicate those that don't from their lives.

Having watched the trailer 19 and a half times (at the time of typing) and read dozens of early reviews, I believe Edgar Wright is on to something big here. You guys bitching about the relevancy of Speed Racer in a Scott Pilgrim thread should really watch the trailer several more times.

i think the only comparison people are making with Speed Racer is that it looks like an amazingly original piece of work with awesome visuals. that and maybe the underdog thing, since SP isnt really a big name. i cant wait until a slower trailer though so i can see whats going on. looks amazing.

just saw the trailer and it doesn't even begin to carry the kind of awesome gravity the movie has. understandable why people who don't know SP and have only seen the trailer would think this is all a bit silly.

i take it you have seen the film? do you think the trailer is an accurate representation of Cera's Pilgrim?

yes i've seen it

no, that's my least favorite part of the trailer. the bit where he says "tear them apart" is the only representative part. in the movie he's goofy at times, confident at others, believable when you see him be a "ladies man".

michael cera is not george michael. he is Scott Pilgrim. believe.

Very important question:

Does he introduce Wallace as his "totally gay roommate"?

Holy shit! I only just realised that it actually is Anne in the trailer. :lol
I'll be much less subtle next time. I'm actually finishing up an AD marathon so it's fresh in my mind :D

I've been so afraid this wouldn't be very good, mainly because of Cera. But fuck... This actually looks AWESOME. Michael has to fuck up majorly to ruin this. Good going, Edgar Wright

I just wish people that haven't read the comics would stop saying "THIS LOOKS DUMB." and the like. You're basing your opinions off a short trailer rather than five fairly thick comics. Enough already.

And whoever said "No More Heroes: The Wonder Years", you're not far off. Though personally I'd say it's closer to The Adventures of Pete & Pete in that weird, surreal shit happens constantly and nobody questions any of it. It's just about being a 20-something instead of about being a kid.

Right, so only people who have read all the comics and were creaming their shorts before even seeing a frame of the finished film are qualified to judge. Gotcha.

Seeing as this is a thread about the trailer, I don't see a problem with judging the trailer based on the trailer.

the problem is that those people will be judging the film itself with the same attitude. also without knowing what is going on in the comics, judging even the trailer is difficult. theres a lot of things in there that may make the casual person say "wtf is that stupid shit"

I rather do wish they didn't release this trailer 4 month prior to it's release as it's managed to render me stupendously excited. To the extent that I've no idea how I'll be able to cope with my enthusiasm over such a long period of time; throughout which I'll have to traverse through the monotony of everyday life.

I also do wish that the video we've seen featured Kim Pine. Keeping in mind that she's one of my favourite characters in the material this splendid looking piece is derived from. Also baring the praise bestowed upon the characters portrayal by critics, thanks to her accuracy to the source material.

ah now i understand what you were saying. i dont know man, while it has gotten my hype way up, i would be more upset if i didnt see this trailer. been waiting a while now and i love it. i cant wait until a proper trailer with appearances from Kim and Envy. i want to see Knives' anime eyes as well.

No, I'm saying it's obnoxious to judge any movie on a fucking trailer, especially if it's based on something else. But thanks for putting words in my mouth.
