Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

So besides the obvious (Sonic games, Phantasy Star 1) what are some good/must have Master System games?

Also were the other Sonic titles (Chaos, Triple Trouble) released for Master System? If so, are the majority of Game Gear releases availible for the Master System as well?
Chaos, yes. Triple Trouble, no, but IIRC some folk at Retro went about making their own port instead.

Did they ever release it in cart form...or are MS repros possible? Also are there any region differences between Master System games? Bombardment of MS questions I know, but still thinking about a power base.

Japanese and Western SMS carts are different shapes so a cartridge adapter or Japanese system would be needed for those, but US and EU carts play on the other regions's system. Some European games do run better in 50hz (PAL), but I don't know of any that actually don't work at all in NTSC, they just run faster.

Also, check out the SMS thread...

I've definitely got Fire Shark on my list now. What do you guys know about Hellfire?
I found Hellfire in my box of loose carts. Will try to give it a whirl after finishing Lightening Force (almost there!) and Fire Shark. Lightening Force simply amazes me. The graphics, music, and gameplay are fantastic! Fire Shark is solid, but doesn't have the same impact. It reminds me a little of Raiden. I like some of the details, like running ground soldiers, and dolphins(?) swimming in the water. The sprite movement is really smooth, too.

You know what, forget the haters, I really enjoy playing Altered Beast. Even if it is a bit simple in its execution, transforming into a beast is really satisfying.

But damn, it's really hard.
I have a soft spot for Altered Beast. It's not very deep or difficult, but I love the sound, music, and graphics. The Genesis version doesn't present much of a challenge, but the arcade version gives me trouble. Because it was the pack-in cart with the Genesis, I played it to death.

this is the kinda crap i get since no one selling Revenge of Shinobi can play it to level 3 for me, haha
Heh, I should play thru my copies and find out if either are original. (I think the last time I played RoS was from the 6-pack cart, which assuredly was the edited version.) I don't know how I managed to get 2 copies, but it happens frequently enough that I buckled down and put them all in a Google docs spreadsheet to refer to when I'm at cons/shows/pawn shops. I did buy RoS when it first came out, and remember fighting Spider-Man, Batman, and Godzilla, but I don't remember what happened to that one. =(

Just ordered these two from eBay:

Pirates! Gold - I played this on Sega Channel back in the day and fell in love with it. Haven't played since then and I know I'll still have a lot of fun with this one.

Shinobi 3 - I was never a fan of the Shinobi games, but since I haven't played this one and a couple of you guys have said it's really good, I decided to pick it up as well. Hope you don't dissapoint me gaf.

The first time I laid my eyes on the Sega Genesis, it was the cover story of Video Games and Computer Entertainment. Since the console wasn't out in NA for another couple months, I wore out that issue from overreading. If any of you are lucky enough to meet @Gamer EIC Andy Eddy, he has some great stories about covering the launch of the Genesis in VG&CE, like how that cover was shot on a porn set because the magazine was owned by Larry Flynt.

seeing Shinobi 3 & Phantasy Star 2-3 on her makes me smile

So besides the obvious (Sonic games, Phantasy Star 1) what are some good/must have Master System games?

for me, there's stuff that i loved that may not hold up like Vigilante, and stuff i believe prolly does like Shinobi, Rastan, Zillion, Golvellius, and Golden Axe Warrior though it's not cheap.

popular choices are also Wonder Boy 3: Dragon's Trap, also Black Falcon put me onto Master of Darkness which is a great Castlevania clone.

Whats funny is I found Vampire a little while ago on Game Gear, and wished there was a better way to play it. I wouldnt be bothered if the GG screen wasnt so strange clarity wise.

Also sounds like the Sonic titles play alot better via Master System, but actually have a slightly better color palette on GG? Anyway, Black Falcon pointed me towards the SMS thread, so i'll probably ask the rest there.

It's the only Shinobi game I've really played, honestly. I like it quite a bit, although I kinda wish I could choose when I want to use my sword instead of shurikens instead of having the game choose for me; I'm more of a sword user, see, so something like Ninja Gaiden is more up my alley. It's still very good, though, if you pretend you don't have the sword and just focus on the shurikens; the game's balanced around those anyway.

Oh, and master the double-jump. Seriously. You will start dying regularly around Stage 6 if you do not master the double-jump.

Awesome. Sounds like you've got your SHMUPS on lock down. I look forward to it. I've been playing a bit of Truxton here and there. I also got Bio-Hazard Battle on the cheap which isn't bad but I don't have the patience to play through them.

Just on Shinobi, I have Revenge of Shinobi and one of my immediate complaints was that there was only one button for attack whether shriuken or sword. Theres a really good lets play on Shinboi III on youtube, but obviously I don't recommend watching it if you want to keep the game fresh. I haven't got Shinboi 3 yet but I will pick it up eventually. I've got to restrain from eBay, but I did get something recently in the mail that I will post tomorrow.

Damn, This thread has been an awesome trip down memory lane.

I decided it was time I should dig around through some boxes in storage and see if I could find some of my old stuff.

I managed to find my Jp Mega Drive collection and a Sega Tap but no luck with the actual Mega Drive itself. I know I have it, just gotta keep looking. I have a loose Sega Nomad in storage as well but I don't think I have any Genesis carts for it.

Also since I have one of the ST50 series Plasma's and they are known for having a absolutely horrible scaler I'm not even gonna bother playing any of these on composite. I went ahead and did the right thing and ordered a XRGB Mini and RGB Jp 21pin cable.

So much bullshit about HDTVs up in here. IF you disregard scanlines, there are sets out there that will give you a "perfect" image. I have a Panasonic Viera plasma set, and I run all my old systems over SCART->Component without any sort of scaler. There's no lag, no fuzziness, no blurring, no audio sync issues, nothing. It looks like a perfect (doubled) image.

I think a lot of this is just people justifying their expenditures on XRGB-style devices by exaggerating how "impossible" it is to get a quality image out of an HDTV. That, or they own shitty LCD HD sets and they're using stuff like S-Video and Composhit instead of RGB SCART.

Unless you need scanlines, you can get a fantastic image from an HDTV without a scaler. It's just an issue of your connection type and your set's built-in processor.

Next up: a bunch of people telling me that I'm blind.
It just depends on what you think of things. I also have a Panasonic Viera plasma and I'd rather not play my old systems on it. I can run my systems using JP21 rgb cables into my xselect-d4, but still I prefer not to use it. I just prefer to play on a CRT, as my plasma doesn't look as good.

I have my Saturn and Mega Drive/MCD connected to my 25" Wega and when I get the cables for it, I'll hook them up to my Sony PVM instead. (only my SFC and FC are hooked up to it at the moment)

Master System could show 32 colors out of a palette of 64. Because of the Game Gear's lower display resolution, it could show 32 colors out of a palette of 4096. The Game Gear also could do stereo sound, while the Master System can't.

congrats on your collection acesmk, you had the yu yu hakusho game which is still amazing

Also, I will make this question again since nobody answered, how are the steam ports of the genesis games? are they good, had trouble on emulation? lag?

Yeah, the GG's color palette is the reason there was no "Mega Game Gear" adapter for Genesis/MD.

However, I always loved my Master Gear Converter. Allowed me to play Phantasy Star 1 on my parents house.

My friend didn't like it that much, because the game didn't load properly for me once, erasing all of his save files... uh oh.. :D

I felt so bad that I returned him the cart and bought one for myself.

...thinking about it now, that didn't really help him much. Oh well, at least I gave his cart back. :D

Shinobi III Enhancement Hack

This adds a no shuriken mode you can turn on or off at the pause menu, among other things. I too prefer to avoid using projectiles in that game. Slashing and kicking things is more fun.

hahaha, that's terrible

Fortunately, I don't think I've ever had a save file get erased or go bad on me (knock on wood).

also, Hardcore Gaming 101's book showed me that if you look around online, you can find an interesting Shiniobi 3 beta with some pretty different stuff from what we saw

shame, that. idve enjoyed it.

man finding a working model 1 sega CD without spending an arm & a leg is a bitch, i really do prefer the look of it though

I missed this post the first time around. What a cool collection! and JP MD box art is so neat!

im a big fan of most genesis box art, but JP MD boxes are undeniably awesome. at any age, i see those things and just want to pop them open & dive in, which is exactly what cover art should do to you.

Yeah, the GG's color palette is the reason there was no "Mega Game Gear" adapter for Genesis/MD.

I doubt that is the real reason. I do not think most of the GG games take beneficts from the expanded palette. Here in Brazil almost all GG games were released also as Master System games, and I doubt the local company (TecToy) would enter in much trouble adapting every release.

Yes, that is the real reason. Otherwise some homebrewer would have successfully done it by now.
Master System conversions have the game code re-written to conform to the Master System's smaller color palette and monaural sound. That's why you can play SMS games on GG but not the other way around.

The closest thing you can do to play GG games on a TV outside of emulation is consolizing a Game Gear using the original hardware like this:

!!! That "Game Gear System" is great/cool! As far as I understood from that Japanese page, that guy assembled it by himself, right? There is no way to buy that kind of machine or to have assembling instructions.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but for most games it's just a physical lock-out like SNES - import games will work fine but they don't fit inside the cartridge slot without physical modification. Some games will need action replay or game genie codes to function properly in other territory consoles though.

This is an interesting question, I've been pondering it myself.

Here's where I'm at:

JP MD:
+ all games I want are available on it, language barrier is superficial for shmups
- more expensive

Genesis:
+ cheaper
- miss out on many shmups

Which SHMUPS are you talking about ?

I played NA SHMUPS as kid (Thunderforce, Arrow Flash, Truxton etc ..) but if there some awesome SHMUPS that never made it here i might consider getting a Mega Drive then .

I also noticed that games are way cheaper for Genesis than SNES :p

Thanks guys for the advices

I know of Gleylancer and Battle Mania 2 as examples that never left Japan. I tried Gleylancer on VC but it really wasn't my cup of tea.

Such a fantastic console.

The Sonic games, the superior Shadowrun game, Street Fighter II, Shinobi series, etc. just one of the best console libraries of all time, and I still think it's better than the SNES.

Awesome, these guys are a good resource for retro gaming.

Just watched the video and looks like a missed quite a lot of SHMUPS for the Genesis.

If i get the NA version of the console is there a specific model i should get ?
I know there was like 3 different models .

Okay, as far as I can tell, here are the JP exclusive MD shmups. I have not included unlicensed games and I have not included "fly into the screen" shmups (like Space Harrier). Xenon 2 looks like hot garbage!

Trouble Shooter Vintage
Eliminate Down
Slap Fight MD
Heavy Unit
Darwin 4081
Curse
Gleylancer
Twin Hawk
Zero Wing
Fire Mustang
Undeadline
Xenon 2
Divine Sealing
Verytex
Bio-Ship Paladin
Dangerous Seed
XDR

Too bad PS2 is missing the Hint book...

Don't worry about the hint book. Mine is missing it too, in fact trying to find a copy with one is a huge pain in the rear. Even when they go on sale separately the price they command is ridiculous.
