NPD shows Xbox 360 #1 selling console in Sept, 438K units and Gears 3 #1 title with over 2M units sold-through.

Didn't he says 360 was double Wii?
I don't even understand how that would happen...
He used to consistently underestimate 360 and overestimate PS3. Although recently his PS3 numbers have been more realistic.

Holy Crap at Gears. Good for Epic and Co. Love that game.

430k for the 360 is nice as well. Amazing how long they have been number 1 for.

Sony PR for later:
SCEA
NPD’s September report saw double-digit growth for both PS3 software (52%) and hardware (20%), as increasing brand awareness continues to fuel interest with consumers. First-party software sales remained strong this month, with boosts from blockbuster titles like Resistance 3. The lower PS3 console price point and the upcoming release of exciting titles – Uncharted 3, Everybody Dance and Ratchet and Clank – will continue PlayStation’s momentum into the holiday season.
-- Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA

great games = hardware sales that is what nintendo is saying for YEARS and it has always been true.
Ms first party does not release a lot of games but if they do 99% is awesome enough for people to buy hardware with it.

For me the bigger question is what price cut is doing for Sony and why it didn't seem to be a game changer last month? Maybe it shows its full effect this month?

PS3 sales grew 20% YoY or MoM?
20% MoM would actually not be growth at all.
5-week month vs. 4-week month would have an increase of 25% just if sales held steady over the previous month.

So for Sony's sake, let's hope it's YoY.

Wow, that's a lot for the PS3. Why did it get a boost in sales?

It's the first full month after a price cut.
In the last two weeks of August they sold 70-80k and this was a 5 weeks month.
Maybe people understimated the impact of the price drop a little bit too much and too soon ;)

wouldn't 20% MoM be a decline (per week)?

But I bet it is YoY otherwise they wouldn't boast about it.

At least they'll make out better than Nintendo did. My predictions are coming close to reality, so 3DS is likely going to see a big weekly drop.

Surprised the drop to 250 really helped Sony.

Have had plenty of friends get a ps3 for 200-220 through sales on amazon or 300 with 100 $ gift card at mainstream places like walmart/target. Figured anyone knowing about the small price drop would be savy enough to have gotten one even cheaper.

lol at Sony's "brand awareness."

One day people will finally get familiar with the Sony and Playstation names. One day!

Wow at Gears 3. Nice work Epic. Hopefully it continues to sell through the holidays.

it's just a guess :)
either is MoM +20% (260K) or YoY +20% ( 374K )

we'll see

Or maybe we won't.

Anybody familiar with their previous PRs can tell us if they typically cite MoM or YoY when they talk about growth?

Last NPD Sony said they were supply constrained so maybe we are finally seeing the effect of price cut.

Is "brand awareness" of the "PlayStation family" increasing?
If they've had a weekly decrease in sales in September despite the launch of Resistance 3 and their new ad campaign? Probably not.

At least they're set up nicely for month-over-month increases through the holiday season.

370K+ should have resulted in a lot more pomp and circumstance in Sony's PR blurb.
