Skate outsells Tony Hawk 2:1

I want Skate II to be as great an improvement as THPS2 (which is regarded by many to be the best of the series) was over the original.

If they can do that, then we have the contender for the best skating game ever. If we're looking at a series that starts with SKATE '09, then we're sunk.

I can't believe Tony Hawk games still sell..

Me neither. THPS2 and Underground were worth it because they genuinely pushed the series forward. The rest are more or less copy-and-paste affairs, and judging by those sales I think consumers are starting to cotton on to Activision's tactics.

Skate was good but got really boring really fast. Not enough FOCUS in the game. A great start for new series though.

Indeed. And make sure I can get off my skateboard in the next one.

GO EA!

Seriously, they've been on the ball this generation.

I don't think the entire generation, but certainly the last half-year.

I'm not sure if it's EA getting better, or just other companies (Activision and Ubisoft particularly) getting worse, but they do seem less evil these days.

I'd say just as evil, but much better. That is to say, while they're still trying to buy out the entire games industry, at least they're being more innovative with their game designs.

Nice! It's great to see skate get the appreciation it truly deserves. It's by far the best skateboarding game ever made. It's still my favorite game for my 360. I still play it nearly every day.
Bullshit. Tony Hawk games get allot of crap (and rightfully so) but theres a reason they have been rehashed so many times. Hell the reason most people hate the games is because they played them too much. It would be interesting to get the opinon of someone who was playing both games for the 1st time.

THPS2 is the actual best skateboarding game of all time.

I guess the Hawk franchise will have to skate dispiritedly around some fenced-in housing estate until they unlock the Sales and Respect features.

Yep. There's no way on earth Skate is better than THPS2. No way.

I really wish they'd just do a remake of that game, in HD and 60fps, for Live and PSN.

dude I'll give you a hundred bucks and take you out to Benihana's if you slide that seventy-five foot handrail D: :p :d D: :p D:

I'll give you six hundred tries, I'll be back next week :d D: :p D:

laaaate

It's okay, I liked Proving Ground MORE THAN twice as much as I liked Skate.

:P

Seriously, though, they are not comparable games. Tony Hawk is about arcade style exagerations, weras skate seem to be going for simulation.

As I've said before, if I wanted to deal with the difficulties of real life skateboarding, I'd go out and skateboard in real life. I don't care about realistic interactions with the curb, and when you taking away my jump button, that's when I get stabby.

Skate died for me the second I realised you couldn't even get up a kerb. You've been able to walk for years in Hawk, why the hell did EA think it would be fine to make you do a massive fucking circle just to find the nearest ramp?

Agreed. THPS2 is still the king of the skater scene for me. I'd love to see a THPS2: HD...

Of course when you say THPS2 you mean THPS3, right?

It was great, but the gameplay was broken thanks to certain glitches. Plus, it didnt bring as much to the series as THPS2 did, in my opinion.

How the hell is 2 better than 3?

3 is 2 with better everything.

I don't remember any game breaking glitches.

The levels were better in 2, that's why. Sure, reverts were great (and the series should have stopped there) but Skate Heaven and Skate Street were (are) amazing. And School 2, of course.

I can't read lips. :(

'It's fucking fun man'. GAF's GIF of choice whenever someone mentions Hawk.

American Sk8land and Proving ground on DS > any other skateboarding games.

If you guys want good skateboarding games, head to the DS.

Anyone thats played the games will know what im talking about.

I hope Proving ground sold the best on DS.

Agreed, although I thought Sk8land's visual style was better than Proving Ground's. I digged the cell-shaded look.

Are you seriously going to tell me that the Revert wasn't incredibly important? Really? Have you gone back to THPS2 lately?

Yeah, what happened here?

On the flip hand, I can see Activision putting out a PR that GH3 beat Rock Band in sales despite the cost difference etc. Anyway the former franchise is going to so get run into the ground like Tony Hawk.

I guarantee you by the end of this year it will be RB everyone and their mother will be talking about and not GH3. The fact that's it's already the 5th most played 360 game, (Only 3 lower than GH3) a new franchise,(Compared to GH's established one) and has a much higher price point than GH3 speaks volumes.

as someone that skipped work to play the first Tony Hawk demo all day and put countless hours into every TH since...Skate is the best skateboarding game ever made. by far. gamers might argue..but i don't see how any skater would.

Sure, reverts were pretty integral to building combos. But that's exactly where THPS3 had it's fair share of problems:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u-CjJwffE0

See how the guy jumps after doing each revert? That's a glitch that bypasses a certain rule in the game code which decreases a players momentum. What this means is, if you had the time, you could spend hours on the same loop, racking up points. Normally, a player would eventually slow down and revert to manual tricks, and eventually be forced to stop their combo.

THPS2 was more balanced because you had to economize the 2/5 minutes you had with the greatest variety of tricks. THPS3 had none of that, because the highest score was always determined by whoever had the most time on their hands. It rendered the timer useless, and made the game less fun.

First time I've actually even heard of that glitch.

Nice to see that skate did well. I still want more of a california games than a skate 2 tho.

This is the big hassle I have with skate, curbs aren't so bad but stairs are bs. The rewind feature helps though.

It made too easy to get high combos and points. THPS2 was more balanced, if you wanted to get sick scores you had to be a machine playing it, not relaying into revert+manual IMHO.

I just wanted to be able to get off my board and walk three feet. Meant I had to return the game, sadly, because it was such a glaring oversight that I couldn't deal with everything else. Well, that and the PS3 framerate sucked, hard.

Only thing the revert did in Tony Hawk games was give way to the death of the skating aspect, and the rise of the never ending fourty hojillion point combos.

oh, but you can flail your thumbs, and hope you angle them right so that you can jump up on to the curb instead.

I did have one good moment in skate, though. I was being forced to follow some NPC from one area to another, and as he's crossing the roa, out of nowhere, he gets hit by an SUV. I know it wasn't scripted, because I'd gotten past that point before without losing sight of him.

That just kind of sums up my entire game experience. If it sold well, that's great for EA. I still have no interest.

A tiny ollie gets on the curb easily as long as you are coming from a lane away, no flailing needed, just shitty manuevering!

But close up - not a chance, your character will just do a pathethic attempt at an ollie, clip the curb and fall backwards, slowly, and then into a car. And steps? Not a chance. You'll have to search out that ramp 300 yards away.

Skate might very well have simulated skateboarding to perfection, but as a game it failed. IMO, of course, because everyone else loves it.

flicking sticks in order to jump is flailing, as far as I'm concerned.

I ABSOLUTLEY hated it

Oh, I liked the controls, I thought they were cool, and intuitive. Sadly, I'd have liked more than about 8 tricks, too.
