The target audience for this product, i.e., people who lived through that time and played those games when they were new, most likely already own them. Either the original PS1 discs or some PSOne Classics rerelease from PSN.

I never claimed that Nintendo created the "mini console" concept, but this effort by Sony feels definitely way closer to what Nintendo did than to what AtGames did. I'm not emotional, but to me your whole argument is disingenuous. Sony are doing this because it sold well for Nintendo. They're copying the size thing, the amount of games included and more importantly it feels like a direct answer to what Nintendo did. Nobody gives a fuck about AtGames for a reason, it's a shit product that deserves to be forgotten. More importantly to this discussion, it's irrelevant here. Sony is copying the formula that worked for Nintendo, claiming that well "Nintendo didn't invent it" is bullshit. It doesn't matter. The "mini console" sold well for Nintendo and generated some solid buzz, Sony is jumping on the bandwagon. But they're bringing absolutely 0 new things to the conversation, it doesn't have a new spin on the concept to differentiate it. Just the library. They could have played it less safe and perhaps done this less formulaically, but it is what it is.

I totally see what you're saying, and it can be construed as copying, but I totally fail to see what the problem is. I find cries of copying are extremely hyperbolic, and it's not just coming from you. This industry, and many others, are built upon the foundation of successful ideas of others. In fact, everything, everywhere is a remix. I also don't believe that purely based on the quality of a product, that it should be completely shunned and forgotten about. Like AtGames' product, it has just been revealed that the licence has been revoked and I think Sega are developing the product in-House. When the newer version releases, it can, should and will be compared to the older version. Therefore doesn't deserve and won't be forgotten, not quite yet. I find this aspect kind of disingenuous.

I never had an original genesis. Me and my flat mate in college had tons of fun with the ATgames Genesis. I got way more use out of it than I have has with the nes or SNES mini.

I think we just have different philosophies on life, and business. That's fine. You call it copying, I don't. We can agree to disagree.

I like the idea TBH, as PSone has so many games that hold a special place in my heart and have stuck with me in memory much more then recent systems. HOWEVER! I cannot in good mind preorder something for 100 bucks with only having 4 of the 20 games announced. That's highway robbery, Sony should have had the whole list when this went live everywhere. This could be a great deal, but I think alot of people have unrealistic expectations of what this system is going to come with. I'm seeing peoples lists asking for 10+ rare RPGs, while I would put money that other then FF7 (which should be there as it was THE RPG for that generation, and helped pave the way for more gamers to play them) we may get one other RPG if that. I think this will feature more of the first party and classic stuff ie Twisted Metal, Medievil, Wipeout, Ape Escape etc. Maybe Metal Gear Solid, but I would assume there are alot of moving parts with what they will be able to put on here. Sony doesn't generally do the Nintendo thing and only make like 5000 systems so these shouldn't be NES Mini levels of hard to find so I'll take the wait and see approach.

Like I said before - most modern TVs have powered USB ports available directly on the TV. This includes a USB cable - just plug it in to any powered port you've got.

It also doesn't come with an HDMI to composite video cable. And they want to charge $100 for this? I guess if your TV doesn't have HDMI ports, your screwed and have to buy your own converter. Sony is the worst. /s

Sony has the characters from Devil Dice (Xi Jumbo in Japan) as avatar selections. It would have been nice to have had a copy somewhere. I own it, plus the sequel, but its an import. Bombastic on PS2 is also part of the series.

One thing Sony has done, like Nintendo has done in the past, is make their power adapters universal with other devices. Same goes with video outputs, at least up until the PS4 where it had HDMI.

A PS2 mini won't happen for years if at all.

PS2 games have been getting a lot of remasters and remakes notably from Sony and Square Enix. They're not quite old enough to be sold in a classic bundle at an attractive price.

This is reasonable. I'm (probably) going to get the Playstation Classic, it is a product I want. However I think this is going to get stale pretty soon if we keep getting the same idea on basically the same hardware with no innovation to differentiate them. I'm not crazy in love with the Neo Geo version, but it did try something new. That's the problem with "copying" and not adding anything to the formula, eventually the formula loses steam once people get past the novelty of it. Like I said, I would have liked to see Sony do something that sets this apart from the Nintendo counterpart more than the library, but they didn't and I do get why. I just don't like it much.

Honestly I think this drip based approach that platform holders and publishers take when it comes to older games is frustrating. We're inevitably getting shafted because 20 old as fuck games on a nice looking but basic as shit unit is not worth 60-70 bucks, let alone a cool hundred that Sony is asking for. This strategy is built around novelty and novelty wears off with no variation to it.

Because people simply expect that an adapter is included, even when a USB adapter is rather universal.

And when its not there, its just one more reason to throw the gauntlet on the thing. I don't think its really fair to dismiss the device solely on that, as i am not that negative.

I just found out what the wattage of this device is: 5 watts.

Which more than likely means its going to use an ARM based platform similar to NES/SNES Mini.

If its the same hardware, then it will be an easy machine to port homebrew over, which i feel is the biggest, albeit less prominent potential advantage of this PS Classic. It could be an ideal low end machine, although their PSTV already fits that role. Since the PS Classic likely is going to run Linux, other games may be ported over though.

That being said, in terms of technical prowess, you could argue even the NES/SNES Classic's are incredibly overpriced for what they are offering technically, especially when you can get an TV Box with vastly more modern CPU, GPU, more RAM and more flash memory for half the price, except that runs Android.

I hope the PS Classic actually does run a modern SoC (As in, 64 bit's Cortex A53) instead of the rather outdated AllWinner R16 platform, but i am not holding my hopes up.

If you own the disc you don't have to pay in order to play it on your x1. If you own the disc for a game that will be on the PS Classic console you can't play it on the PS Classic console. You have to pay again.

The "Free" refers to the BC service. You can just insert the disc and play, no need for additional hardware or rebuying games.

Hmm. I might be interested... I'm assuming it will render the games the way the original system did? If so, the only thing I can ever think about with the PS1 was that weird janky effect on all the polygons, where they continuously shift and warp in subtle ways. I can't even decide if I'd want that or not, because I usually prefer accurate recreations, but those weird jumpy polygons mess with my eyes.

Depending on the other games on the list, I might pick it up. If they decided let you install games via USB from PSN or if it was hacked, I'd get it in a heartbeat. Price isn't a problem since most PS1 titles are like 5 bucks digitally nowadays so the number of games pays for it. DualShocks didn't matter on the PS1 aside from a few scant titles like Ape Escape. I preferred the non-stick pads anyway and I still have my old black one I got when I first picked up FF7.

I only say used since they're no longer being manufactured and aren't available at retail new. There are some NIB auctions on eBay for a premium if you're down for buying old stock.

And speaking of things that are no longer being made - you could also pick up a Playstation TV that can be hacked and plays PS1 games and supports dual shock controllers, with the added bonus of playing PSP and Vita games.

Not sure about PS1 titles but Vita games on the PS/Vita TV have some annoying input lag in the time I've used it. It's passable when using them on TVs but it's not a great experience, I think.

Same here - I have a NES classic and SNES classic so this would fit right into a "mini console" collection, but if I end up keeping my pre-order I probably won't even take it out of the package lol
