Sony's 1st and 2nd party studios have expanded a lot since last gen

if I where sony or any of big 3 I would buy nvidia instead of game developers. how big is nvidia? I was thinking if any of big 3 buy nvidia they are in a win win situation, nvidia is profitable and GPU for their console will be free
Nvidia is worth about half as much as Sony and Nintendo, they couldn't afford to do it. Microsoft would never do it even though they could afford it, makes no sense for a software company to buy them.

Also, the only reason nvidia is profitable(depending on the year) is because people pay them for the services they provide. If they give out "free" chips for a game console then the company won't be profitable.

I think Sony's decision to strengthen their first and second party portfolio of developers was one of the best they made this gen.Hopefully they will expand their studios in the next gen adding more quality developers under their umbrella like ThatGameCompany for example.

Still, from a personal perspective the majority of the games developed by those studios left me unimpressed. Not that they were bad games or anything it's just that most of them were shooters which is not really my favourite genre.

I would have liked to see SCEJ expand as well, aquiring more developers and creating more teams but realistically, i don't see it happenning unless somehow the next xbox starts selling competitive well in Japan.Only then Sony will be forced to give more attention to their Japanese studios.

Sony did the right thing with gaining more 1st party quality and quantity. Hopefully they invest heavily in Japan oriented gaming next gen. And why not forming new studios instead of acquirements?

If that's the case, would the monopoly people even allow them too?
As long as ATI/AMD would be around to counter Intel/Nvidia, I can't see the problem. That said, I don't know if Intel really care much about the GPU market besides those integrated GPUs they develop themselves.

to big for sony and nintendo but why the hell didn't intel buy them already.they could dominate both CPU and GPU market
Kind of like saying why doesn't Microsoft just buy Nintendo and dominate the gaming world. Probably would have to deal with political issues and nvidia has enough cash to avoid a hostile takeover so they have to willingly sell. Sometimes companies don't know when it might be in their best interest to sell(see yahoo turning down MS a few years ago)

you mean like European parliament and us federal court? I don't think they can interfere

Well, since Microsoft shot themselves in the foot by rushing to be the first out of the gate with 360, and its high failure rate will ensure it sees less customers next gen, after Sony once again retakes America(s) Insomniac and even someone as huge as Epic won't be out of their reach. The Vita should reveal Sony's new strategy or what is actually a return to its former self, the ingredients and signs are there.
LOL! I see what you did there.

it's always a good thing to strengthen 1st/2nd parties if they produce quality games that people actually buy, which has been a hit/miss this gen for the ps3. hope that will be better for ps4. it's one of ps' brands best strengths.

Buy a good (J)RPG studio in japan, Sony!
One RPG studio!!!!!

well From Software might not be bad choice. Having Dark Souls type of game as an exclusive would be good move. It seems to have it's following audience at this point, and I doubt that many people trade in those games. It did really well in Japan, anyone knows how it sold in west?

I think FS is too big (aka expensive) of a studio for Sony to acquire.

Namco shipped 1.500.000 copies of DS worldwide (NA 620.000,EU 470.000,JP 370.000) but i don't know how many copies were actually sold in each region. But i know that it reached 6th place in October for NA best selling games.

Sony is like Sega and Konami in a sense that they have so many great franchises that they don't update to make their catalog more diverse.

These would make excellent PSN titles IMO

Parappa the Rapper
Jumping Flash
Vib Ribbon
Crime Crackers

These would be great full blown retail games

Medievil
Ghost Hunter
Alundra

I think the Japanese development style and work pace will need to improve before Sony puts out any kind of home-grown investment comparable to the awesome work they've done worldwide.

I think that Sony did the right thing by building up their first party instead of relying on third parties, even if I'm not a fan of their output. There was no way for them to keep any of the "big" third parties exclusive to their systems with how much the budgets have been increasing.

I don't play online, and can't say I'm really interested in modern FPS games, to be honest. I enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever, but that's about it. I lean more towards old FPS games like Duke 3D, Rise of the Triad, Blood and that kind of thing, and that style of FPS games is pretty much dead nowadays besides Serious Sam 3, which I haven't had the chance to play yet.
Hard Reset is ok. The biggest problem with the game is the modern/Call of Duty esque level design and the piss easy secrets. The invisible walls over the fences and other objects really got on my nerves and the 2 weapons with multiple modes thing is a bit clumsy.
Otherwise the game is quite decent even if it's pretty short (around 6 hours).

Serious Sam 3 on the other hand is great. It's a bit more like The First Encounter than the Second Encounter. It's more serious (while still being tongue in cheek) and "realistic" than the earlier games but still crazy compared to most modern shooters.
The first 2 chapters are really dissapointing. I'm not sure if they were trying to ease you into the game or if they were trying to troll the player by making him think they "CoDified" it. The game really picks up on chapter 3 and doesn't let go after that.
The secrets are much better than Hard Reset and there's a lot of them (118).The game is also much longer than most modern shooters. It took me about 16 hours to complete.
Easily the best FPS of 2011.

.
Sony has invested a lot of money in some studios that are not worth it. GG and Zipper come to mind.
Killzone games are such a let down, gameplay wise. Such a dull games, even Resistance games are better. Ok I haven't played KZ3 but after first and second one I had enough.

Zipper is the biggest fraud in Sonys first party line up. They should give those resources to Sony Bend or Sony Cambridge (Primal, Ghosthunter, Medievil) at least they would make something good...

I agree on GG. I only played Killzone 2 from their recent games but it was just bad aside from the enemy reactions and the graphics. It was a crushing dissapointment for me since I was really looking forward to it and then it turned out to be a shitty Call of Duty clone. And Killzone 3 is supposedly even worse.
Haven't played any Zipper games aside from MAG, wich I didn't really like but I think that the idea was kind of neat.

Why are you posting about Retro (Nintendo ) studio in Sony first party thread?
Because here some people talked and asked about Nintendo's 1st party and Retro Studios ex-employees (who works on new game for PSN/Vita @Armature)
I didn't try to find right topic, my fault.

Sony should trim some of the fat. They have a lot of studios that make mediocre games with mediocre sales. No reason to hang on to these, let them go like MS. Keep PD, ND, SSM, and maybe GG. That's it.

They also need to contract From to make Demon's Souls 2. That IP is valuable right now.

GTFO. MAG is the best fps this generation. Killzone 2 was amazing. Just because you don´t like the it does not make the games bad.

Sony should buy MistWalker and give Sakaguchi an actual full studio. The man can still produce, just give him the team and a decent sized budget. I'd love to see guys like Kitase, Naora, Itou, Tanaka, Kato, etc. jump ship from SE and restructure the old FF teams. With Uematsu, Amano, Hamauzu, Nojima all freelance, they could get some awesome Japanese talent in the same house again.
You'd also have to figure a guy like Matsuno would love to work under/with Sakaguchi again.

Wasn't MistWalker under MS just basically an outsourcing house for smaller, shittier companies with The Gooch calling the shots but not having any real money to work with?

Is Infamous selling enough to justify the investment?

And what is LBP doing? The second game just came out recently and hardly anyone knows about it. The user created stuff is only popular with a small niche and never really took off. And Sony completely failed in their efforts to make sackboy a ps3 mascot. Nathan Drake is their image this gen.

I was waiting for some lunatic to reply with this, o well....
I actually think GG is good to have at least from a technical standpoint. They can help build engines for the PS platforms. I also like Killzone 2 and 3, so in my case, I would like for them to be kept.

From what I am aware Infamous 1&2 did really well. Recent Infamous PSN game is best selling first party game on PSN, if I am correct. That means something. Besides who gives a fuck about sales if there is quality.

Can't speak on LBP since that games is not my thing. But I seriously doubt that it was a flop.

I never said they should go away, contrary to that. I agree with you they are important from technical standpoint. All they need is some good story writer, good level designer, someone who can finally fix horrid controls and they are set. But since that won't happen I wish those resources were given to already mentioned studios. They can keep on working on engine and tools.

so because the game isn't selling like Uncharted or Halo, then Sony should kill the studio? you're mad. the team is obviously talented and infamous and LBP are great games. if it didn't take off, then let them try again with new IP. we know MM is making new IP and there's rumor Sucker Punch is making a new IP too.

Personally I couldn't believe high score that KZ2 got once I played it. This is speaking mostly from SP and gameplay. It's so dull and boring. I had to force my self through SP. Most of the game makes you go "huh". It's so silly and stupid. And that ending.....major "roll my eyes moment". Controls are something special....there should be a rule that bans games with floaty imprecise controls, especially FPS where controls are everything.

We haven't had a LTD on LBP2, but I'm sure it's doing OK, and will probably attract longer term sales once it is discounted more generally like the first did. I thought I heard something about the franchise attracting hundreds of thousands of new users over the Black Friday weekend (although that was probably due to a promo on the original or something). MM is profitable and expanding, I don't think there's a dearth of confidence there.

They are not, however, hinging their future on LBP, if you're worried about that franchise's popularity waning. They've moved into a supervisory role wrt LBP and are moving on to new things.
