We'll see if this 1.18 patch actually goes live today. Judging from the state it was in with last night's PTR, I'd say they should've let people do some testing weeks before today. There are way too many issues, bugs, and regressions in the PTR for it to be ready for release IMO.

When the turret was being damaged he even got his own colored outline iirc

Will the original version get Widescreen support or is that simply impossible?

Impossible? Probably not since remastered actually runs on the original engine. Will it get widescreen? Highly unlikely. I think they will leave stuff like that for the remastered version, after all they will want people to buy it.

Man it's good to play the original campaigns again. Probably the best RTS campaigns ever. The missions are great and the cinematics and story have flair, conciseness, clarity and grit that's missing in modern Blizzard games.

They did such a good job bringing modern features to the original games that I'm not sure I'll be getting the remastered version later. I appreciate that they kept the spirit of the original graphics intact (unlike many remasters), but to me they still lose some flair in the translation. The original graphics while not as crisp, look better to me. The sprites don't really suit a super high resolution translation either.

I'm just replaying the campaigns and... I can't say the missions are great. Conceptually, they're solid for most part though somewhat limited (types: destroy all/target, escort, defend, "dungeon"; no tricks in original campaigns though Brood War has some). But the execution suffers in some ways. First, destroy enemy missions usually demand destruction of everything, which makes no sense (destroying production buildings should be enough). Second, the AI is pretty poor, which makes most missions rather easy, at least if you take your time. I don't mind being allowed to play at my own pace but i figure some challenge would be nice still.

That said, these are better than what Warcraft 2 offers, that one had even more limited mission types.

Still fun to play though "destroy everything" missions are pretty tedious.

The story and characters are fun as ever, of course.
One funny thing though, Kerrigan is actually pointless in the original campaign. The manual implies that the Zerg need human psionic talent to use against the Protoss but not once is this actually a plot point in the campaign. (Most likely the result of Infested Kerrigan being somewhat late addition, to allow a "human" perspective to the Zerg campaign.)

I mean that weird error...where the game engine couldn't let you build another single thing until some people died. It would happen when you have thousands of turretts and the Protoss had tons of Carriers... I think it said "Max Units Reached" .. it basically stopped entire game until people attacked.


Gonna go look for correct name or jpg of it...

The sprite limit issue for Valkyries has been fixed but it is unclear if it is for Valkyries only or if they just upped the sprite limit across the board. I'd imagine it will apply to everything...

Wait, really? This is the first I've heard anyone mention this.

Upping or removing the sprite limit would be a HUGE change for UMS maps.

If I can play 1v7comp on big maps (Pitbull Hunters was my favorite) and not have the game shutdown basically because of the sprite limit, I would rebuy the game.



Also, I was a big time player of SC on battlenet and local lan parties, but I'm not nearly as in the know or extreme as probably some of the Gaffers -- but, about half the comp players "being duds" was a bug right? Like it would start building and then never expand past like a barracks or anything. Has this been addressed as well?
 
My entire childhood was a lie.

But seriously those things spin around constantly, how the fuck is the guy even conscious? Maybe the animators didn't even know.

Patch notes for 1.18 note the Valkyrie firing bug is fixed. The only way i can think it is fixed is by upping the sprite limit. Unless the Valk just git an exception.

I remember hitting the limit a few times in those bunker wars games. I'd have to avoid building dragoons because they wouldn't be able to shoot with so many units on the map.

lol, that is so true. Might as well just be sending 12 marines straight to their death! At least they can shoot ground targets!

Players discovered lots of bugs with the PTR so they pushed it back one week.

Shit wasn't even close to ready. It's mind-boggling that anyone over at Blizzard Classic Games was okay with releasing that to the public completely for free as a sort of re-launch of Brood War.

It's not just bugs. They have flat-out broken tons of maps with the changes they've made, and tons of features are missing from Battle.net as well. And let's not even talk about the new Bnet design.

I hope it's pushed back longer than a week. 1.18 is not near ready. Take your time and get it right.
 
Can't wait to play Broodwar again and use Dark Archons to mind control an SCV and Drone to have three armies instead of one.
I absolutely loved doing that in Brood War! Make my own little army of Terran, Protoss and Zerg all at once!

I was really upset when SCII took that ability out.

this is so stupid. why they listen to the morons...

Hopefully they'll release it with the Remaster anyway, seems like it wasn't working properly in the PTR and they cut their losses just to get the patch out the door.

I really don't see the appeal of keeping the set key binds, yes it's a mechanical skill to use the entire keyboard, but at the expense of your health? seems like every other BW player have been to the hospital for carpal tunnel or whatever.
