Mostly it being a letdown to fans of the Origins' resemblance to golden age RPGs and the overall poor quality in writing, plot, choices and consequences, combat, graphics, level and world design, etc. I would go into detail but other gaffers have done it better than me and i think it's something that shows after a few hours, no matter your expectations and how you feel about DA:O.

I don't think it's worth the 10 bucks or your time. There's a lot of better games out there for that price.

That price for DA2 over a D2D is hilarious. It makes you wonder why they bothered with the whole "pull it from Steam" fiasco, it's obviously not worth so much to them anymore.

I think it was more Valve taking it off the store because EA refused to let customers buy the DLC from the Steam store (in-game and Origin only). It wasn't necessarily an "eff you" to Valve so that Origin could get more customers.

If you have a backlog and contention with other titles, most likely better ones. Spend your money else where or save it. It will only get cheaper and its not like you need to show them your support anyways.

To be honest people should already have that nearly 4 year old game, Witcher 2 would be a better comparisons being out nearly the same time.

Dragon Age 2 is like the Transformers of films, good fun.

I haven't noticed anyone talking about it on GAF for a while, but is anyone going to pick up Dead Island? I'm thinking of grabbing it but I might wait to see if there are any 4 packs going around.

Looks like a lot of fun! Only the lame version of Left4Dead2 ever got released in Australia so it looks like a good substitute, plus drop-in co-op where, from the sounds of things, you get to keep developing a persistent character from the singleplayer. And you can ice your buddies for fun. And it's only $49.99 here, so no regional gouging.
 
i pre ordered Dead Island off green man a few days ago for $34.

also finally got around to pre ordering Battlefield 3 off d2d for $45.

awesome.

hope Dead Island is decent. worth a chance at that price, imo.
 
I thought I was over zombies but the co-op in Dead Island sounds like it could be a real winner. And yeah, at that price it doesn't have to be much better than mediocre.

There's nothing really redeeming about the game. As I said, you might enjoy messing with it, especially if you're looking for more rpg in that style. However as soon as you compare it to the first game it's like night and day.

The story is really bad, and a poor example of Bioware's past work. None of your choices matter at all, the story does timeskips which cuts out any feeling of becoming this grand hero because nothing really consequential changes in between, all of the quests are bland and the enviroments you go are really just the same 5 or 6 locations, and there's like 4 dungeon designs and all of the dungeons end up being those locations reversed, and with paths blocked off. Even the god damn maps are exactly alike on the map screen. It's fucking lazy.

The characters are highly unlikable and flat, with the exception being Varric standing out above all others, simply out of the fact he's the one who will stick with you for any reason, and the fact that David Gaider wrote him specifically. However, certain characters from the previous game either don't show up, are retconned, or you barely see. You see Zevran for maybe 10 minutes. You see Leliana only as part of a fucking DLC sidequest, even though she's in the actual ending of the game which is just a video, (so if you didn't have the dlc she would pretty much appear from nowhere leading up to it). Anders is a big culprit for this, as he was written in this game by some freaking Twilight fan who doesn't even like playing videogames, making Anders the most unlikable whiny cunt imaginable. Then when you think the story is going to continue, it just up and ends, and no choices you make leading up to it matter and they essentially write your character and everything you did in the end off with a video saying what happened to you after the end of the game.

The music is nothing special, the art style of the Darkspawn look like the Putty Patrol from power rangers, the animations are over the top absurd, the levels themselves while having quality in little details are overall bland and samey. The armor has a little more variation but the interface is subpar for the PC (it takes up way too much real estate) and it has a new "rating" feature to tell you if gear is good enough, but completely breaks if you level too high by the end of the game and becomes useless. Furthermore it wasn't useful in the first place if you have a modicum of RPG experience because you already know that a mage needs willpower and magic, not strength and cunning.

Really the only improvement is the Talent trees are implemented somewhat better and there's more interesting abilities and the animations themselves are sped up so it doesn't feel like it's taking a long time, but it's clear they were trying to make it more "visceral" but it falls on it's face. The game was bragged endlessly by the devs on how HARD it was, but I played till most of the way through act 2 of the game on hard and it was about what Nightmare was on DA:O. Nightmare wasn't harder, it was just tedious as hell, much like all the higher difficulties in Bioware games. That's when I realized I'd have more fun just OH-KOing everything and turned it down to the easiest setting so I didn't have to spend so much time in combat.

I'm sorry, I've seen all of the transformers films and as a transformer fan I'm pretty sure I'd have to lose about 50% of my brain to properly enjoy that dribble. I want a real transformers movie, and not by Michael Bay.
 
Awesome post, Gvaz.

It really is a very mediocre and unremarkable game.

It's got some decent production values and polish, so while it's not a clunky mess, it's also not worth playing at all unless you just want a "game" where you can go through the motions without having to think about anything for a while. I wouldn't even recommend it for $5. There's just nothing in it worth checking out, in my opinion.

okay thanks for the break down.

i already own Dragon Age 2 from when EA had one of those flash deals on facebook for $12, and i do plan on playing through it sometime soon.

maybe i'll be disappointed with it, too ...but ya never know, i might end up liking it even more than the first one. ya just never know with these things until you play it yourself.

wouldn't be the first time i enjoyed a game that most people didn't like. :P

The UI is pretty bad on PC and i hear some people get connection issues -game using Gamespy and all- but if you've got friends to play it with, for five bucks it's a no brainer. I find it very boring on single player, though.

A lot of people may not know about this, but Google has a reverse image search.

If you go to the Images tab, there is a little camera icon next to the search bar. Click it and upload an image or point it to an image URL, and it will find larger versions. The results are also usually unmistakable about who is depicted in the image.

Wow, 46.4K concurrent peoples playing Deus Ex today on Steam with the European release. I thought 30K was pretty good a couple days ago. This is the biggest non Valve game I've seen in terms of number of concurrent users playing the game at one time.

A yes and no and yes to that. I've played a myriad of adventure games lately as a result of getting a PC again that doesn't throw up as soon as anything is animated on screen. I used to love adventure games 15 - 20 years ago and was pretty much carrying around the notion of the genre being dead - a popular and pretty misguided notion at that - during the bulk of the time since then.

Anyway, I really, really enjoyed Still Life in particular. The interface is a little wonky at first and the labelling is a bit messed up, but once you've sorta poked around and figured out what the icons mean and whatnot it's no longer an issue. If you want a crime thriller that is well put together with a near non-existant amount of sociopathic solutions (I'll give this gardener a permanent skin condition so I can get to that pile of leaves!) and ludicrous puzzle scenarios (cat hair + honey) with dark themes that feel sincerely gritty instead of the forced, bolted on, look-at-me style gritty that's prevailent in most mainstream games today, it's fits that bill splendidly.

Unlike the sequel, which is one of the most headache inducingly busted games I've played in a long while. The story is stupid, the gameplay is full of pseudo "realtime adventure" elements like time restrictions and inventory limitations, and it's so full of glitches you can barely tell what's deliberate and what isn't at points. The fact that 2 is such a soul sucking disappointment wouldn't matter much if you could comfortably skip it, but the actual resolution to Still Life 1 is baked into 2 as a paranthetical sub story that plays out in tiny segments inbetween parts of its main - and almost completely standalone - plot. So that's a bummer.

In regards to Post Mortem, I haven't played that yet myself. I've read reviews that paint a really grim picture of its localisation though, with sentences that seem like they've just replaced the french words in the original sentence with english words and stuff like that. At enough of a discount I'd like to check it out, but it seems considerably more wonky than either of its successors.

So with all this in mind I hope you've a clearer picture. I'd say, personally, that Still Life is totally worth it. Whether you champion through its problem ridden sequel (which I actually did) or simply wiki your way to the plot resolution afterwards, it's still a really satisfying, detailed crime story with a lot of atmosphere and enough of a payoff in the end to feel like it's still a complete experience.
 
SO bought a counter-strike pack and it turns out it was the wrong one. I meant to grab the one with Source in it.

Bah!

Though Being a cheapsake over here since I would only pay 1.24 USD over the pack that comes with all plus source if I bought it separately.

Trying my luck with steam support.

It's been at #1 for quite a while now, even before release and it had a period when it first went on the store for preorder where it was #1 for a bit. I think the other day it was the most played game on Steam outside of the typical multiplayer games that are always there.
 
I did not realize til I saw my library list. The way they have me buying stuff is kinda hard to spot (moved out of country but using my home country to purchase etc). I am not hating and I am dealing with it, its how they protect customers. They see that my current IP is not even close to my home country and assume its a hacker (or something)..locking the account out. One support unblocks I have to buy via a special link and that period of being able to buy stuff varies from 1 week to 2 weeks.


But I don't mind I should have spotted the pack sooner.
