I have a question about older games, how does Valve decide what is allowed on their service? And how do publishers decide what to put on there? Why are there games on GoG like Planescape: Torment that aren't on Steam?

I'd guess they haven't negotiated this game (and other Black Isle Studios games) with Interplay? The only Interplay/BIS games that are on Steam are Fallout 1 & 2 and that might have to do with Bethesda acquiring the IP from Interplay.

They're approached by publishers, I doubt Valve actively goes out and seeks back catalogues of the people they deal with. GoG actually probably does go after older games because it's part of their business to do rereleases and ensure they still work on modern machines.

I'm debating the Doom & Quake pack myself, although the only games on it I don't have on disc (somewhere) are Doom 3 and its expansion. Not to mention you need the discs for Quake I-III to get the soundtracks, I don't know. I'll probably pass and wait for a better Doom 3 deal.

Damn I just got home and saw the Skyrim pre-order price. I was already leaning towards waiting for a goty edition but this seals it.

Do you think the last New Vegas dlc will go on sale for more, or should I just pick it up now?

NZ Steam.. that's why.

It usually only happens to games I don't care about, most new PC games are still 40-50 USD. Why did it have to be Skyrim. :(

The Fallouts and other Bethesda games have never been that much. wtf is going on Bethesda. >:(

Paypal/gifting ftw

I'm sure I'll find it cheaper elsewhere. Steam is my preferred option, but thankfully not the only one.

Passing on any $60 PC game and waiting for a sale. I will however give all my money to Tripwire to support their low price of Red Orchestra 2.

It's probably Steamworks anyway, so it'll end up on your Steam account regardless of how you get it.

Why wouldn't the price be in that regions currency?

I don't understand your question (EDIT: Ok now i understand) , but i will ramble on anyway.

90USD is more expensive than retail here in Aus. With the exception of EA, 2K and COD games, Namco Bandai is largely responsible for all these pricing gouging here in Australia.

98% of games on Steam are the same as the US store. The sooner Bethesda and THQ changes their Aussie publisher the better. Scamco needs to go backrupt and heads need to roll.

I still remember the glorious eve when Bioshock 2 was released. I was tossing up whether or not to get it, and it was listed at $90USD for AU. Then the Steam servers all crashed and when they came back it was listed at $49.99 for roughly 2 minutes before someone realised the mistake and fixed it. I got it just in time.

And that's my "Steam: fuck yeah" moment.

No idea why. Everything is listed as USD, and that usually makes games super cheap due to the current exchange rate, but 90 USD is getting near normal retail price here. I won't have it!

EA Origin lists their games in NZD, so I don't know what Steam's excuse is.

so why does Steam say USD?

Exactly. By putting it down in USD it should be treated as a import, why is there regional pricing on imports? I dont know. We pay a 2% foreign conversion fee by our banks when paying in USD, so therefore it should be an import at US prices.

Steam is a joke sometimes. I have often seen the argument, "Steam doesnt set the prices, publishers do" this is correct. But Valve/Steam are at fault for allowing regional pricing in the first place. There should be a zero tollerance like with Greenman Gaming and other DD sites.

All Interactive are doing Rage & Skyrim, not Namco.

Steam only sells in USD/GBP/EURO

So a lot of countries like Aus are stuck with a store that shows USD.

Buying in USD atm is fine by us Australians, just, regional pricing. :(

Think if we were back in $0.5USD per AUD. Games would be costing ~180AUD. Ouch. :p

(not that that is a valid scenario, but be interesting to see how fast those regional prices go down IF The Aus dollar fell in value, mu guess is, not very fast)

That's pretty crazy to me, it seems like it'd be relatively easy to 'fix' that.
Heh. If they started to sell games with regional currency, things would be pretty different 'round here.

I wonder what's the excuse.

Thing is the AUD is 1.10 USD right now, so we actually do want to pay in USD. Problem is these publishers jack up the prices in our store by $30. It's so ridiculous.

If everything was 'fixed' and sold in Aussie dollars, we would be worse off. Everything would be 90AU lol

My argument is buying off Steam should be treated as an import since we are paying in foreign money. Therefore it should be exempt from regional pricing.

I want to pre-order Skyrim on Steam a lot, but $60 is a lot for a game that should be $50 and will probably be on sale for $40 at some point within a month or two of its release.

Was hoping Morrowind would be cheaper during the hey-it's-time-to-preorder-Skyrim sale. Oh well, always the holiday sale.

From the QuakeCon site
In addition to the QuakeCon 2011 pack, we’ve got daily deals, too. Today you can get the DOOM & QUAKE pack for $29.99 (or $19.99 if you pre-order RAGE). Deals later this weekend include:

Friday — Elder Scrolls sale
Saturday — Brink 50% off
Sunday — Fallout sale

So much for surprise sales.

Skyrim is worth $60 to me if Oblivion and FO3 are anything to go by.

Oblivion was and is completely broken without mods. Waiting for patches and mods before purchasing. Bethesda's games are classic examples of early purchasers guaranteed to get the shaft.
