What a glorious month for Steam! Limbo, From Dust, Bastion, Rock of Ages, Edge, Trauma, Deus Ex: HR.

My wallet is crying. I'm also looking forward to Dead Island right after Labor Day weekend when I get back from Dragon*Con.
So true, it has been amazing recently! It's a great time to be a gamer. I'm all over Rock of Ages but I'm going to hold off as I suspect it is Steamworks. Might be a cheaper deal elsewhere in 3 weeks.

Hmm... Looked pretty interesting, chuck-full-of-humor, great game based on the videos to me until I noticed this in the description:

I pretty much have no interest in the tower-defense genre, so this is taking away a lot of my interest in it. The rest of it looks great, but unless the tower-defense components are minimal/ignoreable for the most part (which it doesn't really look to be from the screenshots), not sure if I'll get this... The wrecking stuff with a giant boulder definitely peaks my interest, but having to deal with a strategy/tower-defense component makes me reluctant... Will have to think about this one, unless it does turn out to be something that even people who aren't fans of tower defense can really enjoy.
From what I've played, offense feels like a more obstacle heavy version of Monkey Ball. Defense is just trying to screw over the other player and it seems to be completely optional. Although I'm sure the better players will do both well.

My google-fu is failing me tonight.

Is there anyway to convert my amazon credit to steam gift cards/credit? Amazon doesn't sell anything that resembles a Steam "gift card"(whether digital or physical).

There is no way to directly convert Amazon credit to Steam credit.

The closest you can do is buy a game off Amazon that registers on Steam.

Fuck me and my aversion to reading anything about the games I play.

Got about 5 hours logged into FO 3 and I was about ready to quit because it was just raping my ass hardcore.

When I woke up in the middle of the night, I had two inspired ideas: #1) I'd look and see if I could reallocate my skill points since I'd clearly messed something up and #2) I'd remembered when the game was in preview state and I saw some cool videos where the guy would target body parts with some GUI. Figured I'd go into the control options and see if that existed, or had to be earned through an upgrade. LOL

Needless to say, playing the game without using the VAT is a complete clusterfuck. It takes like 15 shots to kill something (and ammo is extremely precious). Gah. Clearly I've been playing like a moron, but come on! You make a tutorial that lasts 1 hour and you can't sprinkle in the whole - V is for combat nugget?

I am absolutely certain that they mention VATS in the tutorial chapter. Maybe you just went for mouse 1 without reading the instructions though.

I need some advice how to use Steam Offline mode. I've tried using it before and found out it didn't work and I couldn't play any of my games.

If I turned off my computer after activating Offline mode will it be in offline mode when I turn my PC back on? And how long can I use it in offline mode before I need to sync with steam again?

I remember skipping dialogue once during the tutorial (on accident). I think it took me 70 minutes to get out. Pretty much listened and exhausted every dialog tree. Talk about bad luck if true. Still, they should have made it mandatory to get past that shooting sequence.*

*It's possible they did mention VAT and I glossed over it because its sounded like gobbledygook. Should have been mandatory for the BB sequence.

Oh well, if I liked the game enough to muddle through before, I should really start enjoying it now.

If memory serves (and it's been a while) it is when
your dad gives you the BB gun and you kill the roaches

Atlus is a shit publisher and will always be a shit publisher until they start porting the Megaten series to Steam.

Wow, there are multiple off putting sentiments in there and none of them have to do with Atlus bringing - or not bringing - SMT games to PC.

You are correct. This is exactly where the tutorial covers the usage of VATS. I can't imagine trying to play the game without it.

Would it be possible using, proxy + 2nd account?
It's easier to ask somebody to gift it to you here, on the Steam Gifting Thread.

First of all, Steam checks the IP you're making the purchase from. If your IP is from the UK and you try to make a purchase on an account that says you're from the US, you can't.

Second, Valve looks up the Credit Card information used in the purchase. If the address on file on the Credit Card doesn't match the address information on the account, you can't make the purchase.

Lastly, if Valve notices that this one account is being used only by gifting stuff to other account (by using a VPN + Debit Card or Paypal combination), there's a chance that both accounts will be suspended. This exact scenario already happened on SomethingAwful forums.

Just ask somebody to gift it to you and pay them through paypal.

anyone familiar with the game Legendary? its on sale on D2D for $9 and it looks pretty good ...huge monsters, nice graphics.

also, is Gun anygood? that is also on sale for $9. doesn't look too bad.

Legendary isn't bad. Pretty run of the mill generic FPS with some supernatural shit thrown in. Takes about 8 to 10 hours to play through it.

The PC port of GUN is based on the PS2 build and is shit. Runs in 4:3 with bad graphics and controls. The game itself is pretty great though. I am probably the only person in the world who had more fun with it than RDR.

Until there are Japanese PC ports made by Atlus' Japanese studios Atlus' NA branch can't do anything to meet this unrealistic demand. They are a localisation house and they've done a pretty great job with the turd sandwich this generation has handed them.

I think it's great that they're branching out to support indie devs like Team Ace.

This one isn't quite as offensive as Origin at least. They seem to have fairly decent feature parity with Steam, unlike Origin which, by their own roadmap, will be there in two to three years.

Some of the language in the promotional video is kind of weird though. It makes it seem like there will be a tier of games that Gamefly members can play for free, kind of like what Gametap used to be.

I know one thing, that BF 3 image they keep using in the background for the promos, that ain't gonna be in that service. I too believe it'll just be a tier. I guess they figure if they're gonna mislead, go all in.

Okay, so since getting my new PC I've been using Steam a lot more than before. I have to ask does STEAM actually have server listings for non-steamworks MP games and for the non-valve games? I know this seems quite silly, but I just don't get beyond the store and pricing, what the huge plus of Steam is. I know this is an incredible basic question, but this is also coming from a guy who never bothered setting up an icon for his avatar or adding friends. I'm just trying to figure out how I can use Steam to it's full potential now that I have a gaming rig PC. To an extent this also helps me better understand why people rage when a Game is Steamworks (Civ5) or that a game won't be on Steam (BF3).

Thanks!

No, if a game is using GFWL or gamespy or EA servers, Steam won't have access to that server data. Try using the community features and making some friends if you really want to get the most out of Steam. As for raging whether a game is steamworks or not, that comes down to purchasing/drm preference. The thing you have to understand is that Steam had time to lure people in and let them build communities around it, something the other services are scrambling to do atm.

No. To be able to use server browsing of multi-player games, join friend's games, etc; a a game needs to support Steamworks. LIVE, UPlay, Origin, etc, will not show you games through Steam.

Why is it a big deal? Because many games do support Steamworks. And it's fantastic when they do. On the other side, it sucks when they don't because then you're stuck with an infinitely inferior system for no good reason. Steamworks is free to developers and great for the customer. The fact we were headed for a unified system that benefited everyone and now we're colliding back into the clusterfuck of 20 different sub-par systems/friends lists is why I get riled up on the issue.

Well, to answer your two last questions first:

1) Some people rage at Steamworks because it means the game has to be tied to Steam (which, funnily enough, also makes some people really, really happy). Some people are vehemently opposed to any kind of DRM, even the kind Steamworks employs, which is a DRM with value-added benefits like cloud saves, achievements, automatic patching, unlimited downloads, etc.

2) Some people are angry over BF3 not being on Steam because it is an artificial limitation on where they're allowed to buy their game. Steam has a lot of benefits outside of the Steamworks suite, one of which is the ease of library management. A friend had to abruptly reformat his computer recently and because of Steam, he was able to redownload Just Cause 2 painlessly. Now, as a counter example, I bought Bionic Commando rearmed from Capcom (when it was thought it would never appear on Steam). Even if I remembered the password I used for the account, I would not be able to redownload the game file. I could have made an offline back-up of the installer, but unfortunately I built a new computer and lost track of that stuff. There is convenience in having your games tied to one account. It's the same reason you don't have a dozen email addresses for different groups of people.

At least, I hope you don't do that. That'd be weird.

To answer your first question, Steam brings together a lot of convenient services you'd otherwise have to piecemeal together. There is a unified friends list, there is built in voice chat, and built in party chat rooms. For some games, you can right click on a friend's name and join the game they are in from there. I dunno, if you're not using the community features of Steam, then it is kind of hard to understand the benefit of the community features.

Steam advantages are:

1) Unified friendlist accessible ingame from any game run through Steam. Just press shift+tab (the default combination) and the Steam overlay will pop up, showing friends on the service and what they're playing
2) In game browser. I think this is AWESOME. When i'm waiting in line on those Endless Matchs in Street Fighter, or when I'm stuck in some game, I can just open the in-game browser and do other shit.

Funnily enough, 1 and 2 work for ANY software run through Steam, even games not on the service. It's that good.

3) actually good and non-intrusive DRM, even for non-steamworks games. Publishers add another layer of DRM anyway (like Securom or Serial Keys) because they're stupid.
4) Neverending downloads for software you bought. 10 years from now you'll still be able to download your games, even if you didn't log into your steam account or played such games. When shit gets taken down from the store (like Outrun and EA stuff), you an still download them if you bought them.

While using Steamworks (which is Free to every developer) is awesome, because that means Server browsing integration and friend invites (right click on any friend and join session in progress), people don't get angry when the game doesn't have Steamworks. People get angry when the game isn't available for purchase on Steam because people chose a digital distribution store as their favorite.

I don't want to manage multiple accounts on multiple DD services. Other people complain about having their CC spread across multiple services. I personally just want all of my shit in one service, that provides me with the best prices (most of the time) and the less intrusive interface.

There's people that go the other way around: They want all their games on Good old Games, because it doesn't require a Client to run at all times (Like Steam does) and there's absolutely NO DRM (afaik, I'm not a GoG user) on those games. They probably also don't care about a built-in friends list.

I run Steam at all times, even when I'm not playing games. So if you're selling a game, might as well provide it on the service I use all the fucking time. Not on some POS Wannabe Software, like Origin or the D2D stuff.

Ah the in-game browser, such a great tool. Especially when I have to look something up in-game w/o alt+tabbing or if I'm waiting in a lobby. This is the kind of thing I'd expect to see on some bullet point list for why I should pay for an online service and yet I have access to it for free.

Thanks I appreciate it, it does help explain things a bit better, but I do see groups for games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 which isnt Steamworks. Is it a game is Steamworks and nothing else or can it use multiple services? I mean Civ5 is Steamworks, but seems to use Gamespy and I could never find servers listed on Steam for it.

Funny, I've never thought to use the in game browser for that. Heck, I never realized you could even use it for that purpose.

You can make Steam groups for anything. And because there's a Steam group for BF:BC2 and because it's sold on Steam, you could see everyone who's actually playing the game (that's in the group). But that's it. Unless they're on your BC2 specific friends list (in-game), you're not going to be able to join their actual game. You'll only know that they're currently running it through Steam.

Can't help you on Civ V. I have it installed, but haven't gotten into it yet. Not sure how multi-player works. Maybe you can't find servers because you can't join a friend's game after it's started?
