Yeah dude, I'm keeping up with whats going on with the "Gemtlemen" (god that name is stupid and forced) and it's nowhere near that bad. Yes, they are MLP fans, but the majority of them either never drew a single pornographic fan art or were straight up against it in MLP. Plus, the anti-gemtlemen were either already drawing pornographic fan art of SU, or would favorite the art of others who did. I make sure I pay close attention when this stuff goes down.Ok what seems to be going on it, now that SU is blowing up, a lot of the people who ruined MLP for kids, AKA the gross Bronies that think that show is "for them" started to come after the SU fanbase. They were calling themselves "Gemtlemen" or some stupid shit and trying to do to SU what they did to MLP. The SU fanbase revolted and revolted HARD, because when you search My Little Pony in Google you get a bunch of fuckin porn, and they don't want that to happen to Steven Universe. They're essentially trying to protect the show's audience, "everyone" (but mainly kids) from having it turn from something safe and enjoyable into a disgusting pornographic wreck.
The writers for the show responded to the "Gemtlemen" thing a bit ago, on twitter and such. I'm not so sure this was really some kind of "brony invasion" and more images of every brony cliche bubbling up in the fanbase at the prospect of a group trying to create a special name for adult, male, fans of the show.
Thing is, Steven Universe already has a rapidly growing universal audience. The show is written to be accessible to younger viewers, while cleverly dealing with subject matter a lot of live action dramas fail at. It would be redundant to try and make a banner for adult viewers to gather under, and the creators have said as much. Remarking that it's actually damaging - because it insinuates that shows like SU, Gravity Falls, etc, are fundamentally only for children because they are animated, and adults must declare a special exception to watch them. That's the cliche animation has been burdened with in the US for decades.
A few folks have remarked that Steven Universe is doing a lot to help rescue American produced animation for TV from the "comedy ghetto" - the stereotype that the only cartoons suitable for adults are pure sitcoms or satire like The Simpsons, Family Guy, or The Venture Bros. SU has a lot of comedy, but it's also a genuine, non-ironic family drama and science fiction show.
Actually, that skirmish over gemtlemen is mostly over tumblr. Tons of feminist on tumblr have been actually implying that it's their show, and anyone making pornographic fan art (some even straight up saying any men who watch it) are ruining the show like they ruined MLP. That's when the tweeter replies began happening and when some of the writers and storyboard artist said they don't care about the fanart porn of SU. Some saying it's ok, another admitted (and shown) that she would draw Ed, Edd 'n' Eddie porn. I did not like that image she drew.
