Sunset Overdrive: 900p/30fps

God i hope the next gen Xbox and PS5 are pretty much identical in terms of power, i don't think i could handle another console gen as tedious as this one in terms of console warz.

Moved on from the bit wars of the 90's to the resolution frame rate wars of the 21st century. Next generation only a handful of devs will be able to afford to create production quality that maxes the systems out and we can move on the the exclusive wars were it's finally the games that matter most(hopefully).

Oh lord give me strength.
You think they chose to keep this game at 900/30 purposefully? As if it somehow fits with this game?
A game of this art style will always look better at 1080/60and the only reason it's NOT is because they obviously don't have the ability to do so.

I don't understand this post, the answer to your questions are:

Yes.
Yes.
Actually all games would look and play better at 1080p/60fps.
Yes, because the Xbox one don't have infinite resources.

Insomniac, love to create games with LOTS and LOTS of action on screen, tons of explosions, particle effects etc... They said a few years ago that there moving to only making 30fps games so they can add more stuff to what players see on screen and make it look visually better too, this should not be a surprise.
It might be 900p cause maybe at that resolution it works well with the Xbox's 32mb Esram.

Bad information, GTAV is getting a pretty impressive visual upgrade for the next gen consoles and pc. If it is 60fps then there really wont be an excuse for this. This is one of the better comparison videos take a look for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtZ5oBWpO90

Edit: On topic I don't care what res SO is if its fun I am getting it.

Hey thanks for the info. Didnt know they were upgrading it. May need to pick it up if thats the case.

I guess this is where I'm not understanding they'd have to sacrifice anything to make it work.
This game looks GREAT but honestly looking at SS there should be no reason to make this run at that kind of resolution and frame rate.

Oh lordy, SS's world is very static. Outside of some parts of enemy outposts the world is indestructible. I'm much rather have the interaction games like Watch Dogs and Sunset Overdrive offer. Because the prettiness of Seattle in Infamous:SS was achieved with its own sacrifices.

Thats a 'good' console war though, talking about and comparing exclusive games.
In 20 years there will be people saying "i'm not buying that game because it only runs at 9k res instead of 10k res" lol.

Interesting that devs are revealing their games res early recently.

I wonder what changed.

Last year I think they were, in some ways, protecting the hype of the new consoles. Everyone was expecting 1080 / 60 and very few games were able to live up to that expectation. At this point, expectations have been tempered and it is not as much of a condemnation on the current gen to announce 900 / 30.

Not surprised. Open world game. Always expected 30 FPS.

The game's art style will definitely help in terms of 900p. Very hard for me to tell the difference between 900p and 1080p anyway.

Oh I didn't know that. The videos they've shown so far don't show hundreds on screen at the same time. If it's like dead rising kind of numbers or more then the 900p makes sense.
DR3 doesnt have 100s enemies. More like 1000s.

The SO E3 gameplay ended with them killing 34 enemies with one shot.

I can't say I'm particularly bothered as long as it's good which it looks like it will be a absolutely blast.
I'm glad they have clarified it as I would have liked to know but I'm not upset by the news.

Bring on October.

I like when people in the thread equate minimal expected standards as console war bullshit.

Our TVs are 1080P and have been for almost a decade. Its the minimum resolution that should be acceptable. Open world games and games with very far draw distances? 1:1 pixel mapping is imperative.

30FPS is just OK... but 30 locked with some sort of motion blur should be the absolute minimal in this day and age. 60 is obviously exponentially better, but very few will complain about 30 if a game sucks you in otherwise.

If 1080p is a must because its the standard then 60fps should also be a must because our televisions have been 60Hz for ages now.

A lot of 60fps claims for GTA 5 in this thread... Is there a source for this announcement?

I would be infinitely surprised if it is over 30.

You know I don't care about resolution but even I have to admit this 900p 30fps is bullshit. If other developers can hit 1080p then there is no excuse not to hit it. That said meh I'll still probably get it. Game looks fun as hell.

Because all games look the same and are equally demanding.

More Motion blur doesn't work or solve anything, people should stop begging for worse looking games.

You can't make up for 30fps by tossing on excessive motion blur, where did this idiotic notion even come from.

Firstly. many people don't see 60fps as being better looking. Take last gen, and think up a list of games that are commonly cited as being amongst the most visually impressive. Now how many of those were 60fps? People aren't begging for worse looking games. If we could have 60fps without anything else being affected, then I'm pretty certain everyone would be in favour. What tends to happen when the devs go for 60fps instead, is people claim the games are simply 'ugly', as Forza 5 and Call of Duty frequently show us. If most people actually did think 60fps looked better, there would be far more games released at that framerate.

Secondly. Motion blur can help if implemented well. The notion comes from stuff like films which appear smooth despite having relatively low frame rates. A lot of this is due to information that occurs in between frames being somewhat apparent in each frame's image, helping to fill in the gaps of what motion has taken place in between. There's really nothing idiotic about it.

This is gonna pretty much be the standard for all Xbone games it seems. Just is what it is. I imagine Halo 5 will be 900p or maybe even less to reach their lofty 60fps goal. Not too shabby but kind of disappointing.

Said it before, outside of a few exceptions, any non-action game should remain 1080p on the system. In terms of action games though (especially "AAA"), if it's 30 FPS then expect 900p-1080p. If it's 60 FPS then expect 720p-900p. Made that based on trends and so far none of the res/frame rate news about the late 2014 games on the Xbox One has surprised me.

Honestly the "1080/60 or it's unplayable" attitude is worse.

I did not say it is unplayable but it is worse. What do you think publishers will deliver down the road when all they hear is "it's fine"? We ended the last generation with games barely reaching 30fps because "It's fine"...

I can't believe how many people are making a big deal out of this whole 900p thing. The difference between 900p and 1080p is incredibly hard to see, and you really have to look for it. It's a total non-issue.

Isn't the difference between 900p and 1080p the same as the difference between 720p and 900p? By that logic should they not have left it at 720p?

It is however, a reality, and the very reason why we keep seeing reduced resolution on X1 games. There is no wrong in bringing facts into a discussion.

Reduced resolution? 900p is going to be the standard for graphically intensive games on XB1. As I said, this isn't new news.

900p is a lot closer to native resolution than 720p. It's very easy to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. The difference between 900p and 1080p isn't as noticeable.

Honestly the "1080/60 or it's unplayable" attitude is worse.

Bores.

The only word I can use to describe this crowd of people who immediately write of a game due to it not being 1080p/60fps.

God knows how they managed to enjoy games prior to 1080p becoming a resolution.

The "It's fine" attitude is one of the worst things that can happen to the gaming industry.

No the OMG LET'S FOCUS ON RESOLUTION AND FRAMERATE over actually enjoyable and rewarding and unique gameplay experiences is. I mean some of the best games I've ever played were 480p. I dread to think what people did before 1080p was a thing.

I am not too fussed about this development for Sunset Overdrive. I really had hoped for 60fps a the least, but I'm not going to stop myself from playing it because of this.

You know it is really funny that the weakest current gen console has the most 60fps games.

Nintendo knows 60fps matters.

Is this even true though?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii U had the highest percentage of 60fps games, simply by not having the majority of 30fps multiplats. I'm not sure if it'll finish the gen with enough 60fps titles to even balance out all the 60fps indies on the other platforms.

I see the that the 900p apologists out in full force. It's one thing to say it's acceptable and it is, this game will be a blast to play it - looks fun, but to suggest that it's hard to tell the difference between 900p and 1080p isn't true at all - especially on fixed pixel display.

You should write Bungie and argue for 900P with more effects...

Wow surprising that insomniac couldn't get 1080p, these are dudes that pit out some of the most impressive graphics last gen at 720p. I don't even think the games looks that impressive with a low lod and and crappy 2d sprite effects.

Isn't the difference between 900p and 1080p the same as the difference between 720p and 900p? By that logic should they not have left it at 720p?
No, it should double the difference and make it more visible. Do you really think you are using logic here?

So is this using the june SDK or not? Must not be.

The game looks fun still, this is the kind of game I would buy a console for. Still a little disappointing @ 900/30.

yeah, i'm fine with this

who knows what that demo was running on.

If we make it a big enough issue and raise hell on the interests, you probably will get every game to be 1080/60fps

And then people will complain that it looks last gen...
The thing is devs will do their best to make the game look and feel as good as they can get it. They try to balance the IQ and resolution/fps so that the game looks and feels good. I agree that we should always tell devs that we want the best, but we shouldn't deride them for not having enough console power to deliver the experience they wanted to give at 1080/60fps.

Yeap, Phill said Insominiac will use the bump to make the world more vivid. Its up to developers how to use the extra gain.

"Isn't true at all"? Excuse me but are you me? I was talking about me and I personally can't tell much of a difference between 900p and 1080p. If you can then that's you.

Sorry? Don't know what else to say. Some of you guys are hilarious.

You should write Bungie and argue for 900P with more effects...

I actually assumed that the game would be 900p on the Xbox One. Seems like it would have been if it didn't incorporate the June update. Should be a good looking game either way though the PS4 version will probably have different visual effects for obvious reasons.

People should really temper their expectations. This isn't going to lift games to 1080p all of a sudden.
