OK, good point, but one could still hypothetically wish that Team Ninja had taken on a Halo project instead of Metroid....gaheris said:When would it ever been on anything besides the Wii

In the next shot it looks as if Samus is targetting the Gfeds with missiles, maybe they want her to dieKevinCow said:Look at those useless assholes in the background, just standing around doing nothing while Samus does all the work.
Someone get a gif of Ridley smashing her against the walls. I thought that was an awesome Brawl reference.
Well, I don't see a combo counter anywhere, so I don't think it'll be anything like that. I'd assume the close combat moves are mainly finishing moves, ways to shake off enemies attacking you, scripted ways to damage bosses (think God of War), and things of that sort. I bet the focus is still mainly on shooting.Epcott said:I just hope it focuses on exploration as much as it does "combo making, space ninja action".

RagnarokX said:I think the game looks brilliant, but parts of the trailer that are confusing. Based on the inclusion of Adam, one could deduce that this game is a prequel and takes place before Samus became a bounty hunter; but it also shows Samus fighting Mother Brain rex from Super Metroid. I think the trailer is just interspersed with flashbacks. Samus' VA sounds young, but that could be because that scene takes place in the past or they picked a bad actress.
First off, this thread is my opportunity to complain a little bit, and it won´t ruin your party. Allow me to sulk into the corner as you make out with the vacuous, obnoxious, hot girl on the couch. Secondly, your post actually helps me articulate my point.SpacePirate Ridley said:People who are arguing about not being a real Metroid in feel.... Please, we had 5 excellent, even incredible, and faithfull Metroid experiences in a little amount of time. From Fusion, to the Primes and Zero Mission.
Then Sakamoto wants to do a spin-off were he tells us the universe of Metroid, the backstory, what we never see. He has created this universe for many years, and they gave him the chance now to show it.
This game doesnt mean that original Metroids are going to dissapear. This is only a diverse of the series, a cinematic experience to all the fans that want to know more about Samus as a bounty hunters, were she lives, etc...
There are fans that doesnt like this, thats ok, but dont spoil the party for the rest of us. You've had you classic metroids (I also had those classic, as I love ALL the metroids minus hunters), but now is time for a little change before going back to the (awesome) metroid classic formula.
If you dont like this game, its like a little rest for the saga. If you like it its just more icing in the cake.
So to all the people who wanted to know what does Samus do directly after the See you in Next mission screen, this is the game for them.
One more thing. If Samus existed in real life and had the chozo suit, she will clearly do in the main adventures those kick ass moves.
I'm thinking maybe the game is set after Fusion, and as Samus goes through whatever ordeal befalls her in the aftermath of that game, she has playable flashbacks.SpacePirate Ridley said:I want to play Samus' normal boutny hunter missions in the city of the trailer. Lets kick some rufians and space mafia ass!
Its maybe an episodic game. Just like Umbrella Chornicles but without the onrails.
Not sure about it, but im rooting for that.

Read what I was replying to, plus the rest of my post. I didn´t position that question to imply that they weren´t at all. He had grouped together the Prime trilogy with Fusion and ZM, under the umbrella of "faithful", which I thought was a bit inaccurate.Gilgamesh said:By having exploration and being atmospheric...?

and the first metroid prime was pretty much a clone of super metroid. the sequels got less faithful though. still awesome games in their own right.Gilgamesh said:By having exploration and being atmospheric...?
All I got out of the rest of that paragraph was that you thought the Prime games were great, but that you don't consider them faithful because they aren't 2D sidescrollers, which is preposterous.Socreges said:Read what I was replying to, plus the rest of my post. Rancid Mildew said:I've never enjoyed a single Team Ninja game. Still, I remain optimistic since it seems very interesting. The gameplay and the way the narrative unfolds is new ground for Metroid and first party Nintendo games altogether it seems.
Beyond that, I hope this is the first of several collaborative projects. If Nintendo doesn't want to make new IPs more often, then giving out stuff like Metroid to third parties that are bound to bring a different creative slant into the development process is just as good, or maybe even better in my book. It would be awesome if a mainline Zelda was given to someone like Kojima.

In what way are the Metroid Prime games faithful? They retained a sense of the same formula and nostalgia, sure, but they remain huge departures from what the 2D games actually are and were never satisfying enough to fans like me who preferred the (note: I am not saying that the Prime trilogy is anything short of great) sidescrolling style. Given Retro´s direction, it was never possible to do otherwise. But that was fine. We still received Fusion and Zero Mission. That was 8 and 5 years ago, respectively, however. And since ZM we´ve gotten two Prime games. So, in my mind, it should be time to return to the roots, but instead this is an even greater departure. As of now there´s little indication that the same brand of exploration will be used. Instead we´ve only been shown BALLSTOTHEWALLHOTACTION. Which I love. But it has nothing to do with Metroid. Save that for other franchises.
And you´ve made the point that Sakamoto wants to show more of the franchise´s universe and make it more cinematic, but you ignore the fact that such a direction is not AT ALL mutually exclusive from what the original formula was.
The reality is that Metroid is a very popular franchise at the moment, has a very appealing style (dark, brooding, sci-fi) for the current videogame market, and so transforming it into a cinematic, action-packed, DMC-type game simply made a lot of sense. The press releases and interviews can dress it however they´d like, but it´s not difficult for us to imagine why this game really exists.
That said, I´m sure I´ll enjoy it. It doesn´t look at all like Metroid (fundamentally), but that´s OK. I´ll just have to continue hoping for another 2D sidescroller, though I´m afraid this game´s existence might just put that off another few years.

onemic said:Since when has team ninja ever made a game that has not had an absolutely terrible story or any sense of exploration/adventure elements? From the sounds of the trailer they already seem to have gotten the bad voice acting down. Not to mention this isn't the good team ninja of old as itagaki is gone. They may as well no longer be called team ninja any more.
That's the hope I'm clinging to.Shiggie said:You guys think Miyamoto will let that happen? Remember what he did with retro?
Is he not the rival character from Hunters? The one that follows Samus at the end of Corruption? I haven't played Hunters, but I've seen pictures...pakbeka.. said::lol
the "remember me?" guy is the same one that was dead before Kraid's lair in Super Metroid, mystery solved
How was I not clear? Of course, they were faithful in many ways. If we take apart the entire game and look at it as individual pieces instead of an overall product, there were many areas in which they retained the franchises feel, at least superficially. The obvious difference, which no one should need to spell out, is that it was a 3D game from the first-person perspective. So they are effectively very different games and played very differently. Listen, I was excited for Metroid Prime. I was a huge defender before it came out. Yet, I never did finish it (I think I nearly reached the last boss). It was extremely well made and designed, but I just didn´t enjoy it that much. Likewise with Prime 2 and 3.Gilgamesh said:All I got out of the rest of that paragraph was that you thought the Prime games were great, but that you don't consider them faithful because they aren't 2D sidescrollers, which is preposterous.
Has this ever been said by Nintendo or Retro? It´s possible, of course. You know, I'm pretty sure the only reason we even got ZM and Fusion in the first place was because of the Prime reimagining
I had the same thought. I really hope so. Hopefully the development team responsible for Fusion and ZM aren´t all tied up with Team Ninja.I could very well see a ds/dsiware/wiiware 2d release happening to cross promote with this.

IGN: What can you tell us about Metroid Other M other than what we saw in the trailer?
Reggie: What I can tell you is that it's going to be fabulous. I've seen it working. I personally didn't have a controller in my hands, but it looks great. And it really is going to do a fabulous job giving you more backstory on Samus, taking you more into the mythology of what Metroid is all about. It's going to be great.
IGN: So this is going all the way back to her teens?
Reggie: We're not going to tell you exactly where it fits in the Metroid mythology. We're going to share that a little bit later. But it definitely fills in some of the gaps.
