Team Ninja & Nintendo - NEW METROID on Wii!

When would it ever been on anything besides the Wii
OK, good point, but one could still hypothetically wish that Team Ninja had taken on a Halo project instead of Metroid....

{ducks and runs}

We won't explore Samus as a character, we'll shoot shit and it will be interspersed with poorly-voiced CG cutscenes and over the top dialogue.

Oh yes. OH GOD YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!

Look at those useless assholes in the background, just standing around doing nothing while Samus does all the work.

Someone get a gif of Ridley smashing her against the walls. I thought that was an awesome Brawl reference.
In the next shot it looks as if Samus is targetting the Gfeds with missiles, maybe they want her to die

I think the game looks brilliant, but parts of the trailer that are confusing. Based on the inclusion of Adam, one could deduce that this game is a prequel and takes place before Samus became a bounty hunter; but it also shows Samus fighting Mother Brain rex from Super Metroid. I think the trailer is just interspersed with flashbacks. Samus' VA sounds young, but that could be because that scene takes place in the past or they picked a bad actress.

I just hope it focuses on exploration as much as it does "combo making, space ninja action".
Well, I don't see a combo counter anywhere, so I don't think it'll be anything like that. I'd assume the close combat moves are mainly finishing moves, ways to shake off enemies attacking you, scripted ways to damage bosses (think God of War), and things of that sort. I bet the focus is still mainly on shooting.

I need to see more before I can this completely. It's hard to tell what sort of game it is. If it's 2.5D action with occasional 3D moments, then this is the game I've been waiting for since Super Metroid.

If it's a 3D Devil May Cry style shooter/brawler, then this is finally the last nail in the coffin of the series. Metroid is dead.

I'm excited for this, but I'd rather have an original IP from Team Ninja and Nintendo (even though I'm sure this will play like a completely different franchise to a large extent).

And when I see this:

Or an expansion of the metroid prime ad.

Its maybe an episodic game. Just like Umbrella Chornicles but without the onrails.
Not sure about it, but im rooting for that.

People who are arguing about not being a real Metroid in feel.... Please, we had 5 excellent, even incredible, and faithfull Metroid experiences in a little amount of time. From Fusion, to the Primes and Zero Mission.

Then Sakamoto wants to do a spin-off were he tells us the universe of Metroid, the backstory, what we never see. He has created this universe for many years, and they gave him the chance now to show it.
This game doesnt mean that original Metroids are going to dissapear. This is only a diverse of the series, a cinematic experience to all the fans that want to know more about Samus as a bounty hunters, were she lives, etc...

There are fans that doesnt like this, thats ok, but dont spoil the party for the rest of us. You've had you classic metroids (I also had those classic, as I love ALL the metroids minus hunters), but now is time for a little change before going back to the (awesome) metroid classic formula.
If you dont like this game, its like a little rest for the saga. If you like it its just more icing in the cake.

So to all the people who wanted to know what does Samus do directly after the See you in Next mission screen, this is the game for them.

One more thing. If Samus existed in real life and had the chozo suit, she will clearly do in the main adventures those kick ass moves.
First off, this thread is my opportunity to complain a little bit, and it won´t ruin your party. Allow me to sulk into the corner as you make out with the vacuous, obnoxious, hot girl on the couch. Secondly, your post actually helps me articulate my point.

In what way are the Metroid Prime games faithful? They retained a sense of the same formula and nostalgia, sure, but they remain huge departures from what the 2D games actually are and were never satisfying enough to fans like me who preferred the (note: I am not saying that the Prime trilogy is anything short of great) sidescrolling style. Given Retro´s direction, it was never possible to do otherwise. But that was fine. We still received Fusion and Zero Mission. That was 8 and 5 years ago, respectively, however. And since ZM we´ve gotten two Prime games. So, in my mind, it should be time to return to the roots, but instead this is an even greater departure. As of now there´s little indication that the same brand of exploration will be used. Instead we´ve only been shown BALLSTOTHEWALLHOTACTION. Which I love. But it has nothing to do with Metroid. Save that for other franchises.

And you´ve made the point that Sakamoto wants to show more of the franchise´s universe and make it more cinematic, but you ignore the fact that such a direction is not AT ALL mutually exclusive from what the original formula was.

The reality is that Metroid is a very popular franchise at the moment, has a very appealing style (dark, brooding, sci-fi) for the current videogame market, and so transforming it into a cinematic, action-packed, DMC-type game simply made a lot of sense. The press releases and interviews can dress it however they´d like, but it´s not difficult for us to imagine why this game really exists.

That said, I´m sure I´ll enjoy it. It doesn´t look at all like Metroid (fundamentally), but that´s OK. I´ll just have to continue hoping for another 2D sidescroller, though I´m afraid this game´s existence might just put that off another few years.

I'm thinking maybe the game is set after Fusion, and as Samus goes through whatever ordeal befalls her in the aftermath of that game, she has playable flashbacks.

And I never said anything is wrong with that, although the Metroid title is a bit of a psychological barrier to enjoying that sort of game. Only thing I'm complaining about is people thinking we'll have the backstory of the Metroid universe fleshed out in some grand fashion, it will just be poor cutscenes that taint the history of the franchise.

Its hard to stomach a game like this when its a massive contrast to the whole aura and atmosphere of a well-loved series that's all. I'd prefer if it were a new IP.

was excited until I saw the trailer. This honestly looks like a shittier version of ninja gaiden without the blood and gore.

Not to mention that this is a team ninja game without Itagaki.

I hope they leave co-op out of this game, it will r(e5)uin it all the way.

For nay sayers, remember this is in conjunction with Nintendo deveopers, collaborations with 3rd parties are for the most part successful. Nintendo and Co. will not allow a crappy metroid be released after the high standard of the metroid prime series.

As a Wii owner I have 0% interest in the corpse of Team Ninja taking on Metroid.

Sign Itagaki up and we'll talk.

I'm the biggest Metroid fan here and maybe some of you twerps remember, but when Metroid went to Retro and went FPA...every Nintendo fan ws in an unroar...but the Prime series was fantastic and I trust Nintendo with this collaboration because it's NEW, it's FRESH, it looks to be story driven with possible mixes of the past/present/future of the Metroid universe hisory, it looks to have 1ST & 3RD person perspectivs and even some 2D & 3D aspects...and it is back in Japanese hands where it started and you can tell by how it looks. These are all good things to me.

This leaves Retro open open to something else (Kid Icarus or new IP), finnishes up the Prime series and strengthens Nintendo's relationship with Tecmo all while taking a serious story-driven approach to my favorite franchise. This does not look like when Nintendo whored out Star Fox to RARE/Namco...it seems to be like a great collaborative effort like F-ZERO with AM2!

Read what I was replying to, plus the rest of my post. I didn´t position that question to imply that they weren´t at all. He had grouped together the Prime trilogy with Fusion and ZM, under the umbrella of "faithful", which I thought was a bit inaccurate.

This will be the God of War Devil May Cry Ninja Gaiden Dante's Inferno for the Wii, but better because it will have a story and adventure elements.

It's on the Wii. Throwing bugs and kicking shit into the air should be compatible with waggle.

and the first metroid prime was pretty much a clone of super metroid. the sequels got less faithful though. still awesome games in their own right.

I've never enjoyed a single Team Ninja game. Still, I remain optimistic since it seems very interesting. The gameplay and the way the narrative unfolds is new ground for Metroid and first party Nintendo games altogether it seems.

Beyond that, I hope this is the first of several collaborative projects. If Nintendo doesn't want to make new IPs more often, then giving out stuff like Metroid to third parties that are bound to bring a different creative slant into the development process is just as good, or maybe even better in my book. It would be awesome if a mainline Zelda was given to someone like Kojima.

All I got out of the rest of that paragraph was that you thought the Prime games were great, but that you don't consider them faithful because they aren't 2D sidescrollers, which is preposterous.

I agree with you on the collaborative project bit. and the different creative slant bit. But Kojima and Zelda? No. HELL NO.

You know, I'm pretty sure the only reason we even got ZM and Fusion in the first place was because of the Prime reimagining. I could very well see a ds/dsiware/wiiware 2d release happening to cross promote with this.

Since when has team ninja ever made a game that has not had an absolutely terrible story or any sense of exploration/adventure elements? From the sounds of the trailer they already seem to have gotten the bad voice acting down. Not to mention this isn't the good team ninja of old as itagaki is gone. They may as well no longer be called team ninja any more.

Since when did they say Team Ninja has creative control over the game? This is Sakamoto's baby, bud...And as far as I'm concerned, a lack of Itagaki can only be considered a good thing...

I think the issue is that we just don't know enough about the game.

We know it's a collaboration, but we don't know how much creative control either Team Ninja or Nintendo has.

Is he not the rival character from Hunters? The one that follows Samus at the end of Corruption? I haven't played Hunters, but I've seen pictures.

How was I not clear? Of course, they were faithful in many ways. If we take apart the entire game and look at it as individual pieces instead of an overall product, there were many areas in which they retained the franchises feel, at least superficially. The obvious difference, which no one should need to spell out, is that it was a 3D game from the first-person perspective. So they are effectively very different games and played very differently. Listen, I was excited for Metroid Prime. I was a huge defender before it came out. Yet, I never did finish it (I think I nearly reached the last boss). It was extremely well made and designed, but I just didn´t enjoy it that much. Likewise with Prime 2 and 3.

In short, his point was that no one should complain since we´ve received a host of faithful Metroid games over the past several years. My point was simply to distinguish between the Prime games and the 2D sidescrollers (which is easy to do) and argue that since it´s been over five years since Zero Mission, and we´ve only received Prime 2 and 3 since then, his argument isn´t at all comforting to me.

You know, I'm pretty sure the only reason we even got ZM and Fusion in the first place was because of the Prime reimagining
Has this ever been said by Nintendo or Retro? It´s possible, of course.

I had the same thought. I really hope so. Hopefully the development team responsible for Fusion and ZM aren´t all tied up with Team Ninja.

No.

And the whole
"that's Sylux's ship followin' Samus!"
theory is highly debatable.

When I saw this I thought wow

But I hope it doesn't feel like Ninja Gaiden with metroid models/skins, please. Make this a proper metroid game...

Here it comes!
IGN: What can you tell us about Metroid Other M other than what we saw in the trailer?

Reggie: What I can tell you is that it's going to be fabulous. I've seen it working. I personally didn't have a controller in my hands, but it looks great. And it really is going to do a fabulous job giving you more backstory on Samus, taking you more into the mythology of what Metroid is all about. It's going to be great.

IGN: So this is going all the way back to her teens?

Reggie: We're not going to tell you exactly where it fits in the Metroid mythology. We're going to share that a little bit later. But it definitely fills in some of the gaps.

Chan, chan, chaaaaaaaaan!

I never was one for Prime-style Metroids, so a fresh start with something new, and with Team Ninja helping out no less? That's hot. :D

Any way, if done correctly, I'm interested. I wonder if we'll even have some moments with Zero Suit Samus, too.
