If you played the NES and SNES versions you probably think of it as an explorational adventure game with some light shooting, cool weapon-collecting, and quite a bit of back-tracking. Some might even say it was all about timing and memorization.
If you played the Prime series you probably think of Metroid as a boring FPS with a lot of walking and reading. And a lot of boss fights. The problem, of course, is the transition to 3D which makes some of the concepts in the original slightly redundant, and slightly less exciting when it comes to the action parts...until the boss fights.
This looks like a nice homage to the original two as well as the Prime series, while making concessions to each to make this as interesting as possible. As a NES-era gamer that fully embraces our modern era, it's hard not to get excited about how fun this looks.
But why argue over this? It looks freaking awesome.

I took some Larger screencaps on Mother Brain.

You say this like many games went the CG route this year.w3stfa11 said:This is the reveal of E3 2009. Completely new, actually showed gameplay (not just CG) and looks great.
Well it is Team Ninja so I would actually be surprised if it wasn't hard.Mama Robotnik said:My personal megaton, this game looks wonderful.
I hope its tough, the Metroid series has gotten too easy over the last decade:
METROID - Tough
METROID II - "Jesus Christ" Tough
SUPER METROID - Above-average difficulty
METROID FUSION - Above-average difficulty
METROID PRIME - Challenging
METROID ZERO MISSION - Easy
METROID PRIME 2 - Tough
METROID PRIME 3 - Easy
I really want a challenge. Metroid Prime 3 was good, fun, but tremendously easy compared to its predecessors.

_Alkaline_ said:I'm really wondering where this game takes place. If it contains Samus in her early days, and her fighting Mother Brain from Super Metroid, maybe it's a reimagining of key Metroid moments whilst filling the spaces with entirely new scenarios?
Um. I think you're forgetting something.PantherLotus said:If you played the NES and SNES versions...

But it's not third-person. I'm fairly certain it's 2.5D.xs_mini_neo said:Probably for the inevitable "my first Metroid was Prime, so WTF is this 3rd person shit?! Metroid is a FPS, goddamit!!"
Yeah. You can find it pretty easily online.ilikeme said:This manga you're talking about!? Is it translated!?

Right here. This here is my big fear.teiresias said:As a big fan of Super Metroid (that's the game that got me into the series), and the Gameboy games and the first two Prime games (more so the first than the second, just because I'm weaksauce and found the second a tad bit frustrating, and I don't own a Wii so haven't played Prime 3 yet), I need to keep my eyes on this.
If I buy a Wii, at this point it seems like it will mainly be to play the Prime games again and this game, so it's basically a Metroid machine. I thought the Prime games really excelled in mood and giving you that isolated feeling of exploration, and I loved them for that, it was really a mood reminiscent of the earlier games, though the controls were admittedly a bit wonky - though worked for how they built the game.
I'd prefer if this game stayed in that Metroid mood, but if it's going to go Fusion Anime style on us I need to see the final game before deciding what I think. If they can keep that mood and bring in some more actiony elements than that could work, but I'm just wondering about Team Ninja's ability to make a world as complex and fulfilling to explore as the first Prime game. I really hope this isn't a horribly linear game.
After the story behind Team Ninja getting Metroid we could potentially see WF handed the 2D Metroid license.Xeke said:Man from some of the reactions in here you'd think that WayForward got the rights to a Contra sequel or something.
I just realized that there is no hint of a map in trailer. :x I'm worried.Crunched said:Right here. This here is my big fear.
Team Ninja's games are all very linear. Even with Nintendo working with them, I can see this game turning out to be very guided and straightforward. It may be polished as hell, but the trailer puts a big emphasis on action in place of mood and atmosphere.
Pushing action more could be great; I just hope nothing is lost in the transition.
I have faith, but not without reservations.
