Team Ninja & Nintendo - NEW METROID on Wii!

1z1s1g4.jpg

I took some Larger screencaps on Mother Brain.

It's silly for anybody on either side of this issue to attempt to define what "Metroid" either is or is supposed to be. Metroid is a concept, a world, a universe.

If you played the NES and SNES versions you probably think of it as an explorational adventure game with some light shooting, cool weapon-collecting, and quite a bit of back-tracking. Some might even say it was all about timing and memorization.

If you played the Prime series you probably think of Metroid as a boring FPS with a lot of walking and reading. And a lot of boss fights. The problem, of course, is the transition to 3D which makes some of the concepts in the original slightly redundant, and slightly less exciting when it comes to the action parts...until the boss fights.

This looks like a nice homage to the original two as well as the Prime series, while making concessions to each to make this as interesting as possible. As a NES-era gamer that fully embraces our modern era, it's hard not to get excited about how fun this looks.

But why argue over this? It looks freaking awesome.

This and S&P2 are my two most anticipated Wii games. I think it looks really good, some of the best graphics on Wii and the gameplay (what little we've seen) looks great as well. I'm guessing this is what Metroid Dread was going to be and by some miracle Nintendo decided to put it on Wii instead of DS. Now if only they could take what they've done to Metroid, Mario and Excite Bike and do it to their other properties - Donkey Kong, Zelda, etc.

We get a mix of third-person, 2D and first-person. I wonder how and why the perspective changes.

Probably for the inevitable "my first Metroid was Prime, so WTF is this 3rd person shit?! Metroid is a FPS, goddamit!!"

Man from some of the reactions in here you'd think that WayForward got the rights to a Contra sequel or something.

They will always be people that argue. I think this is fucking fantastic.
I'm a fan of Sakamoto's in depth Metroid Universe when he talks about it, or in the mangas that he did. Im just screaming like a girl right now seeing this.

All hail to the Mother Brain!

If they flesh out Samus' backstory and have a good deal of exploration on top of the combat, this could be another excellent, fresh take on the series. I can't wait to hear more.

You have a Metroid Zero Mission manga avatar so I will say that its telling some of its teen story from the same manga.
You can even see teen Samus with his haircut when she worked with the Galactic Federation.

I'm really wondering where this game takes place. If it contains Samus in her early days, and her fighting Mother Brain from Super Metroid, maybe it's a reimagining of key Metroid moments whilst filling the spaces with entirely new scenarios?

My personal megaton, this game looks wonderful.

I hope its tough, the Metroid series has gotten too easy over the last decade:

METROID - Tough
METROID II - "Jesus Christ" Tough
SUPER METROID - Above-average difficulty
METROID FUSION - Above-average difficulty
METROID PRIME - Challenging
METROID ZERO MISSION - Easy
METROID PRIME 2 - Tough
METROID PRIME 3 - Easy

I really want a challenge. Metroid Prime 3 was good, fun, but tremendously easy compared to its predecessors.

This is the reveal of E3 2009. Completely new, actually showed gameplay (not just CG) and looks great.
You say this like many games went the CG route this year.

Well it is Team Ninja so I would actually be surprised if it wasn't hard.

Wow, it looks like Ninja Gaiden + Metroid :lol

It's a far cry from the lonely, minimalist world of the old Metroid games, but it look like damn fun actually!

If this is what it takes to move Metroid into the mainstream and make it a big seller, then I'm all for it! The series deserves success. I think this idea has a lot of potential as long as they don't make it too Ninja Gaiden/God of War and retain the Metroid feel.

I don't care if that was a concept video or not , it looks fucking awesome!

It also seems that there already exists a huge divisive group of gamers on this title- ones who wanted a new 2d metroid dissapointed that this 5 minute mostly cg trailer didn't feature a single sprite , ones who loved all 3 metroid prime games(snore) who are curious why this isn't the same thing for the 4th time and finally you have the group I fall into- people sick of the same old shit that are happy to see an awesome developer try something new with a formerly awesome franchise.

Now don't get me wrong, prime in most ways really did feel like a 3d metroid but this created a huge problem- proof that what works in a side scrolling 2d game just doesn't always make an interesting 3d product. It took retro until their 3rd game to make everything click and even then their effort still wasn't up the scratch of super metroid or fusion.

Team ninja IS basically making metroid into a ninja gaiden type game and this should be looked at as awesome news- it'll make the combat exciting instead of annoying( I think I only liked the 3rd prime because you got the super death beam from the get go) and hey for those saying it won't live up to the metroid name- fuck off, it's a trailer , for all you know it'll have more exploration then the last few entries in the series. Like perhaps you still explore an entire planet but this time they use a mechanic similar to that new halo game where you unlock glimpses into samus' past. Idono, fuck no one knows really , the game is a year + out right now.

All I do know for sure is that this is about the only thing from all 3 press conferences that I got even a little excited about.

It seems it starts with the Metroid Zero manga, before Metroid Zero Mission (young haircut Samus working for the Galactic Federation, Adam Malkovich still alive...) and it ends after Fusion (some gamplay screens with the new samus suit with the fusion canon, the two samuses at the end...)
They may be playable flashbacks done with a principal Metroid after Fusion game, or that we are seeing something like Samus Chronicles and it finish with the last new chapter, just as the Umbrella Chronicle games.

But it's not third-person. I'm fairly certain it's 2.5D.

Like, this part is clearly 2.5D (sorry for the shit quality):

Most of the enemies are on the same plane, and she rolls along that plane. But she's also shooting enemies in the background, which is interesting.

And even after she does a couple of those cinematic throws, the camera and her positioning return to a clearly 2D point of view:

Which leads me to believe that these moves are simply context-sensitive actions, like certain actions in the God of War games. I think the first-person bits are like this as well.

It also seems like several of the boss fights in that video take place in round rooms, like the bosses in, say, Sonic Rush. Both the purple blob thing and Ridley appear to be in circular rooms.

But, you say, what about the parts where she's running into and away from the screen? Well, I'm pretty certain those parts only happen in specific rooms. If you notice, in both instances, there's a door directly behind or in front of her, which makes it seem like it's pretty much a straight line either way, so I figure it's still pretty much 2D gameplay and you can only move forward and backward, just with the camera positioned behind her. You can also see another one of these areas in the bit where she spins and slams the flying thing.

Yeah. You can find it pretty easily online.

I think it would look better if you didn't freeze it when GTFO appears.

You know what? Fuck it.

I'm buying this day one.

Post above mine: I think you may be right. I notice how the camera snaps back into position looking at that trailer more closely.

No. Please shut up

Wait, in the scene with Mother Brain she doesn't have the Gravity Suit. :\

Also, going with what someone else said, this "Project M" might be more than just one game.

As a big fan of Super Metroid (that's the game that got me into the series), and the Gameboy games and the first two Prime games (more so the first than the second, just because I'm weaksauce and found the second a tad bit frustrating, and I don't own a Wii so haven't played Prime 3 yet), I need to keep my eyes on this.

If I buy a Wii, at this point it seems like it will mainly be to play the Prime games again and this game, so it's basically a Metroid machine. I thought the Prime games really excelled in mood and giving you that isolated feeling of exploration, and I loved them for that, it was really a mood reminiscent of the earlier games, though the controls were admittedly a bit wonky - though worked for how they built the game.

I'd prefer if this game stayed in that Metroid mood, but if it's going to go Fusion Anime style on us I need to see the final game before deciding what I think. If they can keep that mood and bring in some more actiony elements than that could work, but I'm just wondering about Team Ninja's ability to make a world as complex and fulfilling to explore as the first Prime game. I really hope this isn't a horribly linear game.

Right here. This here is my big fear.

Team Ninja's games are all very linear. Even with Nintendo working with them, I can see this game turning out to be very guided and straightforward. It may be polished as hell, but the trailer puts a big emphasis on action in place of mood and atmosphere.

Pushing action more could be great; I just hope nothing is lost in the transition.

I have faith, but not without reservations.

After the story behind Team Ninja getting Metroid we could potentially see WF handed the 2D Metroid license.

I just realized that there is no hint of a map in trailer. :x I'm worried.

Has anybody actually asked the question if Nintendo will commit to releasing this Tecmo game in the west?

If they showed it at E3, that's a no brainer.

If this is a Fatal Frame 4 reference, seemingly there was more at work behind the scenes that most realize.

This would require sacrificing newborns to pagan gods so that they may strike down Nintendo management.

I must have watched that video 100 times today. I am completely fucking sold on this game.

And screw the haters. Peopled bitched and moaned when Metroid went 3D and look how that turned out? Another fresh reboot is exactly what this series needs and I can't wait. Nintendo deserves major props for this decision.
