Team Ninja & Nintendo - NEW METROID on Wii!

Project M

Nintendo (R&D1 aka SPD1) + Tecmo (Team Ninja) + Mysterious Cinematic Company!!

I don't understand why Yoshio Sakamoto's group at Nintendo is soo small. Sakamoto literally has like 4-5 Nintendo programmers that work under him. If he wants to work on 2-3 games, he generally has to grab a couple of his top designers and they have to find hired guns to program their games.

Why won't Iwata give this man more firepower. Unless it's Sakamoto's own peculiar ways or shyness that have forced him into this position.

Yoshio Sakamoto has always been a brilliant graphic designer and story writer.

One habit people have is that anytime Nintendo does a collaborative effort, for some reason Nintendo's involvement is portrayed by as simply publishing the game and all the credit is given to whatever other copyright or development team is mentioned as being involved.

Well, one can hope that this game is the one that does more to bring the Metroid series much more into the mainstream, which will make it so Sakamoto will be given more work and thus can stand to get more firepower, more clout to his name and a good deal of swagg in his step amongst the Nintendo Developer pantheon. :D

If this game finally does what neither a 2D or Prime Metroid could do, then I would welcome this game, for more reasons than one. Samus deserves it, and Sakamoto should get to make the games and tell the stories he wishes.

Some people are pointing this:
What if the game started in a blast with the ending of Super Metroid, leting you play Mother Brain, then the cutscene with the baby metroid, then the awesome beam and escaping form Zebes in marvelous 3D?
Just like Symphony of the Night did with the ending of Rondo.

That would be motherfucking levels of awesome there.

And one of the remeber me? guy friends :lol

As a fan of the series this is all very confusing. I'm equal parts anticipatory, skeptical, and befuddled. I'm really happy that they're doing it in 3rd person, but the emphasis on story and melee action makes me wary. I keep wondering when they're going to revisit the series' more open ended roots again. Every entry recently seems to be a lateral side step. Sakamoto's involvement gives me more faith than anything else though.

Yeah, I'm not feeling this game at all. The minute I saw Samus doing all that ninja shit I shook my head.

I just realized that there's an invisible chameleon enemy behind them.
Woah, what? I noticed something in the background out of the corner of my eye, but I thought it was just another purple beast. I didn't even realize it was cloaked. And I've watched this gif loop like several dozen times now. :lol

Samus has always been really athletic. This is the first game that's going to push that aspect of her really far, though.

It's different, but I think it's a fresh direction to take.

The trailer was action-y, but from 1UP's interview it sounded like the game would blend action and exploration pretty well. I don't think either side is going to be a focus.

Why shouldn't she be able to kick ass without her cannon?

Just, just leave them alone...

When the game hit the stores and they like it better for them, if we like it and not them, well, lots of fun for us.
More classic Metroids are coming in the future, so I dont understand at all the complains. We have played incredible classic metroids in a small amount of time. Just leave the classic formula a time for rest, being Prime or 2d.

And yes, if I had a Chozo suit in real live I would totally do that shit.

She does throw people around, kick, tackle, and smack people with her arm cannon in Smash Bros. I don't see her moves here as anything out of place.

With Sakomoto onboard I have no fears whatsoever. Don't get me wrong... I adore the Metroid Prime games and I'd easily take another Prime game over any Super Mario Galaxy or Metal Gear Solid, but Sakamoto is responsible for my Metroid love because of Super Metroid, which has still yet to be dethroned or even reconsidered on any level as to being my favorite game of all time and the only the game I truly consider to ever deserving a perfect score. Furthermore, I loved Fusion (even more than Prime) despite it's more linear setup, and that's because it still felt like Metroid but the faster pace and its narrative was truly something that felt fresh and immersive, and it was pulled off extremely well. In the end, I like Fusion far more than the original Metroid Prime and even Zero Mission (I'm sorry, I fucking hate the Zero Suit Samus parts of the game -- and it was too easy but Hard Mode made the game near perfect).

That interview really addressed a lot of my questions but also confuses me. At first I thought Other M would be a recap of the entire series in an episodic Ninja Gaiden-like setup, but by comparing it's setup to Metroid Fusion really blows my mind. A semi-traditional Metroid gameplay design with the action mechanics of Ninja Gaiden?! This easily makes the game shoot to the very top of my most anticipated games list. In fact, I don't care for anything else at this point.

Seeing the Speed Booster in 3D is also something I've been dying to see in a 3D Metroid Prime game but it never came to be and it looks like we got a preview of how it might be set up in the Other M trailer.

And in the Metroid Prime Hunters intro, she kicked a space pirate ass the same way. The same with the metroid zero mission manga.

If she existed, she would do that. But the gameplay of the 2d and prime games didnt let it. That doesnt mean she can not do it.

If you could shoot ice beams and rockets from 50 yards away would you run up to enemies to kung-fu them?

Maybe because she sometimes is bored and wants some action?

And to answer your question, if I had a chozo suit, I would totally kung-fu them if I wanted.

Notice most of those fights she has with the bigger enemies seem to be focused on weak points. You need to get in close, fuck em up the old fashion way, and shoot them in their mouth/eye/hole whatever.

Bugs are just fun to throw around, much like hos.

Really, some people think they have the right to say what a character can do and can't.

Let Sakamoto do what he wants, is the co-creator of the saga and the character for fuck's sake.

And with this im out to sleep.

No, we haven't. Prime and MZM are the only ones that generally tap into the classic hands-off style of presentation and exploration, and even they have some notable caveats. There is so much untapped potential left in the formula laid down by the first three games that it's embarrassing. It's like the series is ashamed of embracing the conventions it helped pioneer, even though doing so would set it apart from other contemporary adventure games 1000 times more than any of the avenues they've pursued following Super Metroid. No one is going to arguethe fact that they've all been technically polished, but the Metroid games released in this decade have strained bonds to the classic games. What fan service goes into the details is counterbalanced by the less faithful overarching structure of the games.

To be honest, by this logic, they should just drop a planet destroying bomb on anything that's hostile. If samus has a suit that can destroy ANYTHING the way she does, surely an entire ship can completely fuck over some shit.

It's a fucking video game. Who gives a shit?
Pretty much.

Well if they gave her a mega death gun then we'd win no prob, it's a fucking video game. It's supposed to be FUN.

At least all the ass kicking she does in SSB makes sense now.

Keep this in mind.. in Super Metroid, you could aim up and down and swing off platforms and run at super speed and all this stuff... she could do some pretty crazy stuff that her contemporaries couldn't. It was really the "ninja shit" of it's day.

Edit: If I had a magical super-technology robot suit then yeah sure I'd kung fu them.

Day 2: Yep, still excited as hell.

Is someone still creating that Super Metroid thread? I'm planning to purchase it on Virtual Console tonight and attempt the speed run in the morning.

If I could also kung-fu them, why not? I'd certainly do it for shits.

Did anyone else get really excited for a second when they started to talk about Remember Me Guy in the interview? :lol

Obviously Samus is confident and doesn't mind getting a little dirty, I don't know about the rest of the guys here but I like 'em dirty, she's not afraid to get up close and personal. Shes got moxy that girl.

Most of the grapple moves end in her shooting them. She's basically just setting up for a kill shot.

I was just thinking, they really need to get the Metroid Metal guys to do the soundtrack for this or at least a song.
Hell yes. I vote for the Ridley theme. Their version is fantastic.

I love how over-the-top and crazy this game is. Totally different feeling than the Prime games.

I thought the trailer was hilarious.

It's not like she is decapitating them with a chop to the face, she is getting close to use her gun.

There are reason to get up close though.

What if you can't kill them in time or they are agile enough that you can't shoot them from a distance.

Or there are multiple enemies.

Or they are dangerous from long range (i.e they can shoot back)

Or if your weapon isn't effective from long range (maybe they have extremely thick scales etc)

or they can cloak (i.e the enemy that looks cloaked in that gif)

Most important thing is that this is a video game based around fun not realism so who gives a shit.

Alright now people are just nitpicking.
"I don't wanna do ninja shit. I just wanna stand around and shoot stuff."

Watch this game have some epic confrontation between Samus and SA-X(or something similar)

as far as i'm concerned, she should be doing this shit - she is a bounty hunter

Why would you hit a headcrab with a crowbar if you have a shotgun

exactly.

have none of these people played Super Smash Bros. games? no one complained about her getting physical in those games... now suddenly it's a problem?

while i'm talking about Smash Bros. does anyone else sort of get that vibe from this game? it's like the sub-space emmisary missions with samus, but put into high gear. i still get giddy just thinking about the ridley and samus fight in SSE. god that was awesome.

Well, I pretty much hate the art of everything so far, especially coming post Prime games.

Eh. It could be good, it could be fun, but I'm miles from convinced. I don't have faith Team Ninja can pull off a good Metroid game, nor can do the franchise justice under a different genre or spin.

but it's not just Team Ninja...:lol wats the use. I can't to see more of this game.

Seriously, it's not like we haven't seen her combat prowess before. We just get to see more of it, with added badass-ness.
