The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

I don't get why people would just go and buy this straight away on PS3. Given Bethesda's history, why not wait for other people to report back on how it runs before deciding whether to buy it or not? Or maybe rent it first? It just seems crazy to me.

Kmart's deal on the game was quite good and only lasted a day after release. The initial impressions were that the 360 version suffered from the texture loading issue which the ps3 version did not have. So i bought the ps3 version.......before all the other analysis came out. :(

Buying games when they come out is not fun.

I fell in love with Oblivion on PC. My gaming PC died over 3 years ago. I don't buy 360 games except for the rare exclusive because its a pain to swap cables (out of inputs), I watch BluRays, I prefer the PS3 controller, and I don't pay for Live anymore. I played Fallout 3 on 360, had no clue or reason to have a clue to know about the PS3 problem, and none of the reviews mentioned the Skyrim issues... although its probably because they didn't even play the PS3 version!

I believe yes. It installs in the background, after a initial mini-installation that is done when you first put in the game.

So all you have to do is to delete the saved game data and continue playing. Would be nice to know if this actually solves your problem. My save reached 7,5 Megs this Afternoon, I have the fear that I might be the next victim.

I dont believe you want to delete your saved game data. Pretty sure you have to go into Games>Game Data Utility and then delete from there. DONT GO INTO THE SAVED GAME UTILITY
 
Can a 360 owner please report there save file size here, along with what level you are and time played. I'm just curious if the 360 save file ends up crazy huge like the PS3 version. On another site, a guy reported that his PS3 save file was just over 14 mb after 55 hours of play. He also said that he could only play about 5 minutes before the lag returned, so the whole turning it off every couple of hours was worthless.

Sorry if my words where not clear on that. Obviously, delete the big ass chunk of data (> couple of GB's) do NOT delete save games!! Sorry again.
 
any word on ps3 fix? i can't even play it and im debating about just cutting my loses and selling the ps3 version on craigslist and going out and buying the 360 verison.
 
I was one of those waiting for some feedback regarding on Skyrim just because I remembered how strange Fallout 3 looked on PS3. The hype to play this is still very big.

My main system is a PS3, I also have a 360 but it's more for it's exclusives (I know it's not common).

I went to my local gaming store (GAME) and believe or not they did not have Skyrim for PC or 360 only for PS3.

Thing is, in here, 8 in 10 console players are PS3 users so I talked to the guy in the store and he told me he is waiting for more stock to arrive. They only had copies for PC and the 360 for the people who pre-ordered. Not a single Skyrim on a shelf aside from PS3 Version.

I really want this game. I really want it on the PS3 but I may end getting on 360 (And I pray for GAFfers to add me and XBL voice chat to make my 360 feels less empty)

Is there any problems with 360? Aside from a crash or two or some bugs of course.

By the way, didn't they said (Bethesda) that they were working on a patch? Skyrim installed on the 360 HDD is going well without a problem?

The reason I went with PS3 over 360 is because my 360 sounds like a jet plane. I cannot stand it. It interrupts and pulls me out of every game. I fucking want to smash my 360 with a hammer. Installing to the drive isn't much better. The system is just loud and annoying even when it's not doing anything. I seriously hate the crap out of it because I'm picky as hell and right now I wish I wasn't. My PS3 doesn't make a peep, it beeps when I turn it on and that is all I will ever hear from her.

And really, Skyrim plays absolutely fine on the PS3 for quite a long time before any bugs show up for the most part. A lot of us were "Thumbs up! Runs great!" (you can probably go back and see how happy I was with it) and now the more you play, the worse it gets. People aren't going to wait a week to figure this out. It is Bethesdas jobs to to play the shit out of the game before they release it. They obviously didn't have a single beta tester play Skyrim on PS3 for more than 20 hours on a stock, non-dev PS3. They even had some dude stating the game will be released bug free, and here we are with a broke ass port. Untested. Pie on his face for sure IF SOME GAMING SITES WOULD SIMPLY REPORT THIS.

Yeah it's why i bought mine on ps3 i prefer my ps3 but im not even 22 hours in and its unplayable for me.

as far as 360 the only problems i have heard is the texture stuff which can be resolved by not installing the game.
 
If the game really isn't playable for most people after x hours, isn't there a way to take legal action against Bethesda? Get your money back or something?

Seems like the product isn't doing what it should.

My 360 save is 7 mb at level 20 about 35 hours in, had about 6 freezes so far and the texture problem at first, but deleting it clearing cache then installing it to USB no texture problem for me, that could just be luck though so far. Running 360S 4GB model with 250hd.

Btw I had the texture problem running off disc and if you look at Bethseda boards people are complaining getting it running off the disc, just it not as likely to happen that way though.

That's what i hear from friends who are playing and blog sites, if you install on 360 it gives texture problems or something but they also say it's not that big of a deal.

no where near the ps3 shit storm thats going on i think bethesda should offer a trade in program or a refund program because i and many others have paid $65 and some $150 for a game that cannot be played after so many hours.

its fucking bullshit.
 
They did mention they were working on a patch for all versions, but nothing specific. If you go back in the thread someone from Bethesda said they knew about some random issues that they might not be able to actually fix, etc. But again, no real specifics.

The 360 texture issue got priority because at the time it looked like the PS3 was flawless and the 360 was the only thing that had a problem. Over time that proved to be untrue. Especially when those comparison videos started showing up with blurry ass PS3 textures that looked sharp on my copy.

I don't know, I'll probably just keep my fingers crossed but no real word on them working on very specific issues has me kicking and screaming for the Press to come down on them and force them to address this.

Their bugs aren’t just graphical issues or matchmaking problems. They’re cases of products fundamentally not being fit for sale. Check out thus bug list for Fallout 3. And this one for New Vegas.They're as hilarious as they are terrifying.

But Bethesda keep getting away with it because consumers keep letting them. “Bugs? Oh that’s just the way Bethesda games are” Well f*ck that. No-one else is so consistently shoddy. No-one else of their profile can be actively relied upon to put out a knackered product. I get that these games are big and complicated. I get that some bugs are funny and add character. But let’s get real here. That culture of acceptable shoddiness is what has lead us here. Let a company get away with less serious problems and they’ll (consciously or not) see that as a license to get away with bigger ones. And then we get situations like this. I’m sick of seeing fans blindly defend the company in comments sections and on forums, and then complain – again - when something like this inevitably happens. It’s your fault.

 
Pete Hines keeps saying that they are aware of the PS3 issue and to "hang in there". I realize that it was only released one week ago, but how is it possible that they didn't experience these issues during QA and playing the game prior to the release on the PS3. Seriously, how could they not have put enough PS3 play time to get to >6MB save file? Also, I didn't play FO3 or NV but I'm reading that they both had similar save file size issues. If that is true, was it patched and corrected it in those games?
 
I switched over to SSD for GT5. I wonder if that will help avoid the situation people are running into on PS3 or exacerbate it. I will keep you all posted. Currently lvl 22, 4.5mb save and ~18 hours in. No lag or issues to report yet. Fingers crossed.

I am also curious to see a side by side load time of SSD and HDD for Skyrim. The main reason it was faster in GT5 than other games was the way GT5 constantly accessed a massive database. If Skyrim is similar, I could see the same performance gains with the SSD.

Oh no... got to windhelm, 18 hrs in level 9 and had absolutely no issues, only to find its painted in low res textures. Fast travelled to another city id already been, and that was painted in low res too. This was 2 nights ago. I gave my ps3 a while to cool down. Loaded it up 15 mins ago to check on it and its still that way. Plus npcs are low res now too. And now the game has frozen. Need to hard reset the ps3. What a shame. Interested in the ssd idea. Let us know how that goes!

Because it has been awesome so far.
If shit happens, shit happens and in the mean time I have enjoyed the living shit out of the game.
I figured a patch would be coming and look, there is a patch coming.
Why people sit on the sidelines like they are doing something brilliant or something is beyond me when I would rather just be playing and if shit goes wrong I would just trade it in or play something else until the patch comes out.
Playing so far on the PS3 has given me 11+ hours of fuck all brilliance with no glitches in sight.
 
60-70 hours in, 360 version, installed on the newest 250GB Slim. Other than 2 freezes, I've had no texture problems, and no other problems.

Yeah, can someone clarify? Cuz deleting the install is not the same as deleting cache (which would be deleted everytime the system resets)

Im talking ps3 version too by the way

And yeah, patch notes would be brilliant... Desperately dont want to lose my character!!
 
I'm 40 hours in on X360, haven't had any texture problems, skipping or freezes at all. Considering what Oblivion was like when it was launched I'd say they did a good job this time around. Sucks if you have the PS3 version though.

Nah, they were working on the problems before then. I can't find the tweet, but there was a comment he made in response to a gamer complaining about PS3 performance problems in which he said that they're working on it. There was one even before then where he told people to calm down as it had only been a few days since release. So yeah, they've been working on the problems/issues for more than "a few hours".
 
Yea, discounting the texture glitch I see still occurring now and again on 360, it's been mostly pretty damned polished thus far. I have memories of -always- holding 'A' when starting Oblivion on 360 as a quick 'cache' fix for many of its issues. Morrowind on Xbox...for those of us that experienced THAT, Skyrim is an entire world of difference.

I do notice some really awkward 'phasing' in of enemies, I had a mammoth literally just suddenly 'pop-in' about a mile up in the air and fall to its death in front of me at one point, which was really isolated and weird. Otherwise, no crashes or serious hitches so far.

I do wish the texture patch would arrive soon though, 90% of the time it rarely crops up(uninstalled here), but when a wall or item doesn't load properly, damn is it really disorienting.

How large is your save file? I'm curious to see if it is over 12 mb.
 
I'm glad that i went into bethesda forums before putting the disc into my ps3, those guys are royally pissed, back to Assassins Creed..
 
Didn't one of Bethsedas game work better if you didn't have a lot of saves?

I have like 25 saves maybe I should just start deleting just to be safe.
 
This game and a couple other things (plus the initial positive reation) made me buy a PS3 (I only had a Wii before and there's no way in hell my PC can run this), looks like someone made a mistake (and the said someone was me!)

The game still runs well and has some very nice and sharp textures, but then again I've only been playing for like an hour. :P The only thing that really bugs me is the shadows of people which sometimes suggest they are really Atari 2600 sprites. And yeah, the opening has lots of framerate problems and seems kind of badly put together. It's obvious they were trying to appeal people who're more into action-y games, but it really seems kind of messy, kind of like it was thrown together at the last minute. The interface seems -- odd, too, but I guess I'll get used to it. Oh, yeah, the music also seems kinda sonic wallpaper-ish but it gives just bumbling about something like a medidative quality.

I actually enjoy the odd glitches, though, wouldn't be an open World RPG without 'em. By now I've had shadows of trees moving without the trees budging themselves and wolves and deer bolting into/getting stuck in water which looks hilarious.

I really like how this seems a lot more open than Oblivion, though, without "loading" messaged everywhere. So I guess Bethesda really did take their engine one step further.

Maybe I should look into trading in the PS3 version to get the PC version. I'm not sure how well my laptop would run it, but it's gotta be better than the PS3.
 
its kind of cool that we have a million comparison videos of people counting pixels and the levels of AA and the resolution of partical effects and stuff and for once we have a game with a problem thats 100% caused by developer beings useless and not a problem causes by the RSX being a bit shit or the Cell being weird.

Since this save bug was in most recent bethesda games, even a few reports of it still in New Vegas on both 360 and ps3 so if they did finally fix it for Skyrim 360 I guess they will fix it for the ps3 version eventually.


weird that they wont say if there current patch will fix it... I guess it wont and they just want people who are on the fence to go out and buy it during the black friday sales?
 
So i am just going to cut my losses on ps3 and trade it in at GS towards the 360 version.

Is there anything i need to know going in? don't install it?
 
I was having a lot of problems with the ps3 version a couple days ago but after deleting some of my saves it started working again. It's still far from perfect but it's playable now. I'm about 35 hours in with 10+ Mb save file btw
 
I actually don't notice the texture issue that much even with the game installed and prefer the faster loading times. I uninstalled to see whether I'd notice the difference and honestly it's so rare that I don't care.
 
Disabling all auto-saves and deleting all my old saves really seems to have helped on PS3. It's not perfect, I still have to have a break after every few dungeons... which I should probably do anyway.
