The English Fan Translation Thread

The group that did Ys 6 PC, Ys Origin and Xanadu Next is now working on Dinosaur Resurrection. Not sure when it'll be out, but they seem to work pretty quickly.

I just wanna bump this in case anyone found any more fan translations :)
Biggest fan translation of note to drop since the thread was last active was Rondo of Blood has seen a mostly complete translation that carries over the dubbing and script (?) from the PSP remake.

Nameless Game, Takeshi's Challenge, and both the original Glory of Heracles and its GB spin-off have all seen full translations.

We've got the implementation process for Shikigami no Shiro pretty much done. All we have to do is finish the script, and have some testers critique it, and it's theoretically good to go.

Well, that and figure out how to put the opening's text into English.
It uses a different format than the rest of the game's script(which is graphic based).

Food for thought: is translating the end credits typically a thing? I noticed the Umineko Witch Hunt team didn't. But we can, if desired.

I personally think translating the credits is important, but I know some groups don't do it. Actually, even Breath of Fire 4 kept its credits in Japanese, which was really disappointing.

I'm not above doing it, but it's going to be a lot of work.

For example, the graphic folder for Fumiko is 43 images for her entire script.

The credits have around 183 images.

But we'll see.

Also, question:

We've been using an online script for Shikigami no Shiro, to get the in-game text.
http://www.tatsuno-otoshigoro.tv/shikigami/serihu_kotaro.htm

However, a line from it-

黙れ!悪党!言い訳口上、聞く耳はもたねえよ!

does not match the in-game text, not entirely.

Does that amount to the same thing?

How is Tales of Rebirth? Does the PSP version have any extra content or is it just a straight port? I'd rather play the PS2 version unless the PSP version is somehow the superior version. (PS2 version also looks cheaper after a quick search)
Edit: And I guess it also depends on PCSX2 compatibility as well, otherwise I guess I should go with the region free version.

And has anybody heard anything about another Ys Origin patch? I thought doppia mentioned a fix patch for some of text and missing textures. And hopefully the crashing, I was fortunate enough to only get a couple crashes before the final boss with the last character.

Tales of Rebirth has a really fun battle system and really mediocre story. PS2 version>PSP version. PSP has worse music, no multiplayer and an arena.

Nice one, DR looks like it has a nice and twisted story. Now all we need to do is wait for Groupon.jp to give the Japanese version away as a promotion :p

Subscribing with great interest. Earlier this morning I was thinking about how much I've been enjoying Mother 3 and if there were any other great fan translations out there I should get a hold of.

Back on topic: Any word from the guys translating the second GameCenter CX/Retro Game Master game? The last update on their site is from August.

One of the guys posts on gbatemp. Progress hasnt really been forward, the usual issues have come up (lack of time, people jumping ship, need translators)

Question for you all:

shiki2fumikoa.jpg

Fumiko O.V., my favorite character from the Shikigami trilogy.

In Shikigami 1 and 2, for whatever reason, XS Games localized her name as Fumiko Ozette Van Stein.

In Shikigami 3, Aksys dubbed her 'Odette'.

I'm absolutely certain 'Odette' is the literal translation, but I'm of the opinion Ozette has a better flow to it.

So should we be modern localizers and stay true to the original, or be Working Designs and make a justifiable name change?

Consider: the character is half-German, half-Japanese.

I'd say stick with the original. Though I wouldn't mind having it match up with Shikigami 2 since I've watched those cutscenes millions of times.

General consensus is stick with Odette(oddly enough everyone on our team likes Ozette more :P), so I guess that's that.

That said, we've begun beta testing, and we have two so far. Room for a couple more if anyone's interested.

Looks like Silva Saga 2 for the Super Famicom got a complete translation today. I always check romhacking for a cool new rpg to play, and this is the kind of stuff I love seeing appear. Crossing my fingers that Madara 2 comes some day.

Awesome, I remember reading about this game in a Gamefan years ago... will have to take a look! I really want a complete Romancing SaGa 2 translation. Surprised we haven't gotten one already. And yes, Madara 2 as well. (anybody remember the NeoGAF poster "madara"? He was a cool guy)

Does anyone know if there are translations for any of these Super Famicom games?

- Elfaria
- Romancing Saga 1&2
- Dragon Slayer - The Legend of Heroes
- Daikaijuu Monogatari

I haven't found much.

Pretty sure none of those have any english fan translation yet. Dragon Slayer- The Legend of Heroes came out for the Turboduo in the US and is probably one of the best versions of that game. Better than the SFC version you are probably thinking of.

If anyone is interested, Aeon Genesis will be at PAX East demoing some work in progress. Quoth the Twitter: it's an "event for trivia, translated games, Q/A, demos, and announcements at 11AM on Saturday in Classic Console Freeplay".

Never heard of Tear Ring Saga, looks like Fire Emblem.

Sees it was created by the creator of Fire Emblem.

Well then! I'm interested. And it's not too expensive on Ebay either. Worth picking up?

I just picked up a copy of Tales of Phantasia off ebay to play the completed translation. Are there any other post-SNES translations that have been released since this thread started?

I actually gasped when I saw that the translation was finished.

If anyone's played the throughhim translation already and plans on playing Cless's as well I'd be interested to see what people think of them.

Choro Q 2, apparently, although the superior Choro Q 3 was translated prior to that.

Fan translation has never really made the leap beyond the 16-bit era, has it? I thought we might see a surge of DS translations given the ease of file access compared to the disc-based systems, but maybe it's too recent a machine for many hackers. I saw some interesting proof-of-concept shots of re-engineering Sigma Harmonics's text boxes for Western text a year or two ago, which I'd have liked to have seen expanded on.

Any info on The Last Ranker? Thats the one game I really wanna get into (I still assume the FF game will make it over eventually)

The Shining Force 3 translation for scenario 2&3 has pretty much been completed and works great on the Saturn emulator SSF. They even have a patch for Scenario 1 US that allows you to carry over your data to the other scenarios along with other fixes. Anyone who is even mildly interested in the Shining series owes it to themselves to check it out!

Wow, I didn't think this was ever going to happen. Good news!

This reminds me that I should really throw together a list sometime of desirable fan translation targets, just to try to track some of this stuff in one place....

I haven't played it myself (very glad to know that a patch for it exists, though), but I've heard from others who have that it's actually pretty good.

I really hope the Segagaga translation gets finished.
Quick heads up on the status of this project....

At this point, we need someone who can deal with the font width restrictions as well as access the archival format used for Dreamcast games. Until those two things happen, we can't move forward. All efforts to look at someone able to solve these fundamental problems have turned up nothing. So that's where we're at.

I didn't know there was a Mother 3 translation, its one if those moments where I think I live under a fucking rock.

Will import soon.

Speaking of Mother 3 I have never played the mother series. Now that I know there is a fan patch out is it worth playing the Mother games? Can someone explain to me the appeal?

Tales of Hearts is still going, I guess. The translator is a bit of a joker, so there hasn't been a real notice of progress in a while.

It's worth noting, however, that at the end of January he released another demo patch. I haven't tried it, but it looks like he's doing good work. These things take forever, though, especially when you're doing them in your free time.
