How's that Wimp platformer? Might it be a good iPad Mini game? Seems very polished.

Loving Micro Miners. And Dream of Pixels (though I can barely get 40 lines in classic). It's giving me the Guitar Hero effect. The gaf page I'm typing on feels like it's scrolling off the top of the page.

Trying to try ShadowGun: DeadZone but it always waits at the joining game part, forever.

Not like I'm gonna sub to join "premium servers" or whatever anyways, if that's their intent.

Edit: well it finally worked, I tried a Deathmatch and a Zone Control (or whatever) match. Awful game.

I don't think they meant it as a direct comparison, but rather every great handheld has had a great falling block puzzle game.

Yep, I meant it more in a "what's a great time suck puzzle on a portable device!" context than a "what's a wholly original creation?" context.

Yeah, it's very good, but it's pretty much a twist on Tetris where the other games you mentioned are pretty different.

Then again, the reverse tetris angle is enough of a twist that I think it can categorize as a wholly different game. Similar to how panel de pon can't really be aptly compared to bejeweled - just because they're based around the same concepts doesn't take away from the originality of their mechanics. I can't, for instance, use the same strategies in Tetris as I can in Dream of Pixels.

I disagree with the strategies thing, I've played a ton of Tetris and Dream of Pixels seems pretty damn similar to me. Definitely nowhere near as far removed as Panel de Pon is from Bejeweled. There are subtle differences, sure, but it still feels an awful lot like playing Tetris.

Again, I think it's great, but I'd describe it more as "They found a perfect way to translate Tetris to touch controls," not "They made a puzzle game with entirely new mechanics."

Fair enough. Either way, glad that there's finally something on iOS that can scratch that Tetris/Lumines itch.

Man, Freemyapps has been going crazy lately. Last week I picked up two $10 iTunes cards(two devices), and I'm already just shy of 2/3 of the way to two more already.

I got a $10 card yesterday and I'm almost 1000 today.

I bought Fairway Full yesterday with it. Goddamn this game is great.

My favorites this month (not necessarily released this month but have played the most)

Trigger Fist
Carcassonne
Angry Birds Star Wars HD
Score! Decades of Classic International Goals
Letterpress
Bejeweled HD

iOS has both Tetris (competent) and Lumines (palaple depending on if you can handle the slower pace).

I really wish there was an iPad version of Lumines. The iPhone version looks OK on iPad mini but...just wish there was something optimized for iPad. Who knows if Q Entertainment will ever work on iOS stuff again. Seems like they put out one dud after another on the platform. Hope I'm wrong though.

LOL @ Time Crisis 2nd Strike. Went ahead and took advantage of Namco's sale, and got Pac-man CE also. TC2 is so freaking funny -- it's so bad in its presentation -- I absolutely love it. Still a really fun game too. PC CE is good, and for a buck, I couldn't so say. But I've yet to find a control option that works well.

Shadowgun DeadZone is pretty impressive. Runs very smoothly on my iPhone 5 and online is great, even over 4G. I usually cannot play FPS or third person shooters on touch screen devices, but I seem to be able to play this one decently enough.

Is there only one stage available, though?

Crazy Coaster is free today.

Looks like it might be fun.

Heh, so it is. Coaster Crazy is today's free app from freeappaday despite it being a freemium game that only came out two days ago and already was and will always (unless they pull a Punch Quest) be free. It's alright. There are the typical freemium blockers in place but the moon environment says you can build whatever you want without any of that stuff getting in the way, and it doesn't seem like it will take much time to unlock.

While I think OpenFeint overstayed its welcome, I can't say I'm looking forward to legacy titles too old to be re-compiled having perpetually broken online components as a result of this.

Also a dick move by GREE to do this right before the holiday season. Have to garner that good will with developers to migrate to their new GREE Platform replacement, I suppose, riiight?

I had only recently mentioned OpenFeint being multiplatform as a reason for its continued existence. Apparently not good enough of a reason!

It was at least popular enough a platform that when Cave moved away from it in favor of Game Center after GC launched, they wound up going back in and adding OpenFeint support anyway (so all their releases currently support both simultaneously). I'm just baffled why they would go out of their way to close it so suddenly - it can't cost -that- much to operate for a few months longer if Gree is so intent on killing it.

Huge Lumines fan here, so I tried the demo of the iPhone version on my iPad Mini. It doesn't look bad blown up but it's also not going to win any awards. The song in the demo would rank as probably the worst in any other Lumines song. It's generic, bland and unremarkable. What's worse though is that the skin doesnt move. It's just a static background. What ultimately doomed the game for me were the awful controls. Q? should be ashamed of themselves for not listening to the feedback and fixing the speed of the drop or the sensitivity of the down-stroke to initiate the drop. Unfortunate, because as I said I love this series.

Hey SpellTower people. Just scored a 1050-something word. That was tough.

I have the paid version but I'm not sure if there are any differences in controls (ie., if the demo was ever updated). I deleted it though.

Apocalypse Max is a surprisingly good run and gunner. I played through it on two difficulties in a few sittings and thought it was very solid. Controls are ok and it plays nicely on the Mini.

GAMEDOG finally came out

the new version appears to have a 'hockey sniper' type game

I was game-less after having fully completed Angry Birds Star Wars (Dagobah and bonus levels) so I bought Knights of P&P.

I know I'm late to the party and I do not know if it will wear off but damn it's incredibly addictive...I'm sick and I played 3 hours straight, so damn fun!!!

Still gameless on iPad...after months of one great game after another I had great hopes for big meaty games in the Halloween-Christmas period but so far I was pretty disappointed...and I won't even nominate the games that shall be not nominated.
At least for my tastes.

Back questing in Knights of P&P, loving all the references...bring back so many memories from the past!!!

How often do new offers pop up on Freemyapps?

Just curious how many Amazon gift cards you can score in one week...

Seems slightly random to me. Maybe closing in on the holidays there's more offers? Sometimes during the rest of the year there's only 1 or 2 apps a week when I ched...

Really? Ive been doing this for 2 weeks now and have gotten over 3500 credits on each device. Like yesterday i got 750 credits off the 4 things they were offering.

I've been using on and off since its started a while back (maybe a year ago or so...forgot exactly). There seems to be stretches of times when there's a lot of apps...but there's also been dry spells too. I do admit its pretty good the past few weeks. =)

I've made $40 in iTunes credit from Free My Apps since I got my iPad in the spring, and I'm 200 points away from another $10. I also got 4-5 games when they still offered those. One night I noticed they dropped the points required for games by 90% so I got about $30 bucks worth of EA games for almost nothing.

I had to make a 2nd account since I'm in Canada but it was pretty easy to do. Free My Apps is fucking awesome.

Just started playing Puzzle and Dragons and I think I'm hooked already. Just wondering, what's the best use of the magic crystal?
