So why the fuck is Angry Birds so popular? There are dozens of similar games like it on the net. I just checked, and the game has sold nearly 7 million, and they even make Angry Birds plushies. What gives? Am I missing something here?

Also, Airbase Defender impressions: it's kind of like that helicopter shooting game that used to come on the old iPod Classics, except it doesn't really explain how to shoot stuff properly. OK, so I'm supposed to tilt to aim, but how do I actually shoot? Touching different places on the screen gives inconsistent results.
yeah, stupid us, made instructions screens and didnt describe the most important thing. The fire button is in the lower right corner. Touching the upper parts of the screen fires a missile.

But have a try with "classic" controls (there the fire button is described, as it doubles as rotation control). Thanks for the feedback, we'll do better with future versions.

Posted in the iPad thread but relevant here too:

If anyone was wondering what happened to the iPad Charadium, it appears to have become We Doodle. Turn off the assist thing cause it makes it look like you're trying to draw cobwebs on everything, and a bunch of the buttons in the UI take you to the DLC store. Ngmoco freemiumed it out the ass.

Also a separate iPhone version. No clue if they play against each other.

Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal is out -

99 cents introductory price.
I got this because of the introductory price (I don't think I would have paid more since I already have the original) and even though it's the same game it's still pretty fun and the new music and art style is cool.
I wish it supported Game Center instead of OpenFeint again though.

Has anyone else played the FANTASTIC 'Trainyard' yet?

It's a fairly simple concept, get the colored trains to their color-coded destinations, but holy shit does it have some AWESOME ideas. For example if you have a blue train and a yellow train, and a green destination, you can have the trains run into one another and they mix to become a green train. Or if you have only one train and five destinations, you can use scissors to cut the trains into duplicates. It is REALLY fun and the puzzles are awesome - there's 100 levels standard and I'm pretty sure there are downloadable levels too.

Here's the official PR iTunes description:

Features:
+ Innovative and challenging puzzle mechanic
+ Smooth difficulty curve
+ 100 main puzzles and over 40 bonus puzzles
+ Hundreds of ways to solve each puzzle
+ Easily share your unique solutions on Trainyard.ca
+ Engineered for low battery usage
+ A year in the making
+ Developed in my spare time(support indie games!)

Stuck on a puzzle? Visit http://trainyard.ca/solutions where there are over 70,000 player-submitted solutions.

Trainyard is a puzzle solving game unlike any that you've ever played. It's easy to learn but very tough to master. Your job is simple: get each train to a goal station. Red trains go to red stations, blue trains go to blue stations, etc. You control the trains by drawing track for them to follow. There isn't a time limit or even a score; the only thing you need to do is figure out a solution for each puzzle.

The first few puzzles are almost too easy, but as the difficulty increases you'll be thankful that you were able to practice the fundamentals of drawing track. As the game progresses, you'll have to use colour theory to combine trains of different colours, use timing to merge and split trains, and use every inch of your brain in your quest to beat the game.

Best part? It's a universal app, it's got Retina Display graphics, and it's currently on sale for $0.99!

Damn WordAssassin you beat me :D

I have to say that the earlier puzzles are very easy, but they still got that "just one more puzzle" thing going for them.

Must stop opening this thread. I always end up buying 2-3 apps.

Thank you, that was an interesting read.

No probs. iPhone devs are generally really happy to chat and it's a refreshing change from the cut and thrust of 'regular' gaming.

Ehh? What is this game? I cannot find anything in the app store.

I hate giving Gameloft credit for anything but Dungeon Hunter is as good as it gets for dungeon crawling on the iPhone.

Yikes, that sounded more negative than I intended. Yeah, Dungeon Hunter is pretty good.
iNetHack is pretty good.

I just picked up Trainyard. It took me a few minutes o get to the puzzles that can't be solved in just a couple seconds. I like where this is going. Once the color blending mechanic comes into play, I think it'll be something pretty special.

Also, Cut the rope has hit one million downloads in 10 days. dayum.gif

Crimson Gem indeed looks good! $10 would be the most expensive app I have bought yet. I am holding off for now to get through some other stuff I still haven't played from the big sale last week.
I just bought Chaos Rings the other day for $15, had I known about Crimson Gem I would have bought that over Chaos Rings no question (not that it's a bad game by any means, CG just looks more badass).

I just started playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and I'm actually pleasantly surprised with the controls. Everything seems pretty responsive. While I'm sure I used to pull of insane combos back in the PSOne days on the game, you can still get some great scores using the virtual dpad and buttons.

Awesome I've been wanting to try this for a long time. Didn't get it for DS because I just don't use my DS much anymore. Looks like a perfect fit for iOS though.

Yeah I never played it during my DS days but will definitely give it a look.

Chaos Rings is really like a lite RPG imo (no towns, abundance of people to talk to, complex leveling, inventory management, equipment choices, side quests, overworld to explore), while Crimson Gem Saga is definitely more a real RPG. Chaos Rings is fun, but it's missing a lot of the things I tend to enjoy in RPGs, like selecting equipment and quests and a leveling system that allows you to create a unique character.

I agree, it's a game that's neither entertaining or refreshing but rather a cute take on a common game design. It's success is largely due to the fact that the top lists are so influential. There are endless amounts of better games on the platform; people simply don't look for anything. It's cute, everyone else likes it and gameplay is as simple as swiping the screen until you win. Hizah!

That, and it gets updated very often with lots of new levels, birds, things to do et cetera. For free - it's like a new game every new section, and everytime it gets updated the oldies come back in to play the new levels and newbies jump in. Not that many other apps are so generous with free updates, other than Fruit Ninja.

Lots of apps are generous with free updates, but they don't all sell millions :P

Canabalt, Trees of Doom, Super Mega Worm, Flight Control (did actually sell millions, but anyway), Plunderland, Helsing's Fire, We Rule, Pocket Frogs, Spider, Skull Pogo, Labyrinth, etc. etc. blah blah blah)

Free updates are a sign of nice developers, not good sales. But it's a great way to build a fanbase, for sure.

Was gonna post about this a few days ago. Great game. The first 10-15 levels are a bit slow, but once you get into splitting tracks and blending colors it becomes a ton of fun. It doesn't show up as a universal app, but when you hit the 2x button on the iPad it redraws itself beautifully to fill the screen.

Wow at all the Angry Birds hate in this thread lately. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't a great game. It has lots of fans (as the sales show), and there is more to it than "simply swiping the screen until you win". You can make generalizations about any game, but as others have mentioned there is depth in Angry Birds when it comes to some birds strengths / weaknesses against types of blocks. For example, the yellow bird is great against wood but sucks against stone and glass, but the blue birds are great against glass. You have to plan how to use the different birds and set-up your next shot. Also, skill is involved as randomly sending birds won't get you 3-stars. On top of that, timing is needed to send the birds in to their "attack" mode at the rigt time with all birds other than the red one. Finally, the game is fun, has good art / presentation, and great updates which at least the haters seem to realize.

I remember when Angry Birds was first realesed, it was getting the same kind of praise in the old thread as Cut the Rope is getting now. Hopefully Cut the Rope gets the same amout of content updates as Angry Birds so it has the same longevity. I enjoyed the lite version and plan to buy Cut the Rope when the developer comes through with the promise of more levels. Remember when Angry Birds was released, it had only 3 sets of levels. Now it has 11 or 12 sets, has secret eggs/levels, and has added new birds. Of course if Cut the Rope is on top of the charts this time next year, I'm sure if will have its share of haters then too :D

Angry Birds has an amazing amount of content imo. My wife and her friends love that damn game. I'm not really into it but then again I've never really been into action puzzlers (unless they're super easy like Cut The Rope), especially those that require lots of trial and error. But that's a total dsfdf matter, and I can certainly appreciate the amount of quality content they've packed in there.

On the topic of Peggle, has PopCap made any mention of adding in retina support for their older titles? Most interested in it for Peggle and Plants vs Zombies.

An update for The Incident is out, with a fucking hard high score mode, including Game Center support. Retina support too, not that it makes a lot of difference ;)

I would be shocked, since the PC versions don't even run at the iPhone 4's resolution

PvZ has been running at 960x640 for a while now, hasn't it?

I don't believe so.

Must some of you guys make a fuss about every game having retina support? I can't think of any game I have that lacks it that I wish had it. It really makes so little difference, I mean I just spent like 5 hours playing Game Dev Story and it doesn't even take up the whole screen! :lol
