The Incident just got updated to 1.2 and has retina support now.

i know not every game needs it but it really makes a nice upgrade when it's done right.

This. Popcap is so slow it's comical. Even with projects that seem relatively "easy." Peggle XBLA was delayed for like a year.

It took them a year to get Peggle iPhone finished as well.

It's not like they're making Gran Turismo, you know?

Must some of you guys make a fuss about every game having retina support? I can't think of any game I have that lacks it that I wish had it. It really makes so little difference, I mean I just spent like 5 hours playing Game Dev Story and it doesn't even take up the whole screen! :lol
It won't be a problem for much longer, we're just in a transition. There won't need to be another resolution bump for a couple of years, at least.

@Astrolad, agreed. :lol

I thought the idea was that another resolution increase is unnecessary as our "retinas" would never notice the difference after the retina display?

That's the marketing idea, sure. ;)

Like i said though, I think Apple is set for at least a couple of years, maybe more. That's an eternity in the mobile industry.

That's more than a marketing idea, that's the truth. Unless the screen size gets larger, I'd never upgrade for a higher res iPhone than what I have now. You literally can't see the pixels, so there's 0 reason to add more of them. 3D screens will be next, but the base resolution will be perfect until cybernetic optical implants start going in style.

Game Dev Story stole my entire lunch break, and I couldn't be happier.

Great little game :)

It also now supports using an iPhone/iPod Touch as a controller when you're playing on the iPad, which is AWESOME and every game for the iPad that uses tilt controls should implement.

Has anyone else played the FANTASTIC 'Trainyard' yet?

It's a fairly simple concept, get the colored trains to their color-coded destinations, but holy shit does it have some AWESOME ideas. For example if you have a blue train and a yellow train, and a green destination, you can have the trains run into one another and they mix to become a green train. Or if you have only one train and five destinations, you can use scissors to cut the trains into duplicates. It is REALLY fun and the puzzles are awesome - there's 100 levels standard and I'm pretty sure there are downloadable levels too.

Here's the official PR iTunes description:

Best part? It's a universal app, it's got Retina Display graphics, and it's currently on sale for $0.99!
Just picked this up and so far it's great! Simple but challenging once you get into the later levels. Very nice for $0.99.

Just would be nice is all. Played through Peggle in it's entirety when it first was released for iOS and wouldn't mind giving it another go on the iPhone 4 with a better resolution. Same thing for PvZ.

I don't need a higher resolution either, but who knows. I'm not willing to say we'll never see another resolution bump. Anyway, my point was, apps will standardize and be standardized for some time to come. Until the iPad res bump, anyway. :lol

The Incident's new update is fucking awesome. It's already one of my most beloved apps, but the new update is way beyond fantastic. Playing on the iPad has never felt this good. The game is ten times better now. For me, at least.

Having fun with both Trainyard & Cut The Rope. Quality gaming.

Retina support does make a whole lot of differente to me. Everything looks cleaner. So yes, I do miss it on every game that doesn't support it.

Trainyard has been out for months. I guess the combination of being featured and getting a price drop really made a difference. Although it reviewed really well around it's release so I don't know how people missed it. I even mentioned it on the first page

Neuroshima Hex is $2 now. Buy it before it goes universal/multiplayer and the price goes up.

This game is addicting. I only intended to play for about 15 minutes today and ended up playing for about an hour and half.

Lots of apps are generous with free updates, but they don't all sell millions :P

Canabalt, Trees of Doom, Super Mega Worm, Flight Control (did actually sell millions, but anyway), Plunderland, Helsing's Fire, We Rule, Pocket Frogs, Spider, Skull Pogo, Labyrinth, etc. etc. blah blah blah)

Free updates are a sign of nice developers, not good sales. But it's a great way to build a fanbase, for sure.
The updates can help the rich get richer. If it's a pretty major update sites will usually put out a blurb about it which revives attention for it, and in the description they'll add in something like "HOT NEW UPDATE WITH NEW CONTENT AND BLOWJOBS" to keep the high value mentality up.

Well yeah. Peggle actually came out after all.

The Incident update lets you control the iPad version using an iPod Touch... awesome! The Touch screen shows Frank dreaming about what is going to fall next. :D

I'm assuming everyone has tried Trainyard Express? If not, DO IT.

It's a train game (a typical train game maybe?) but the presentation is divine. And it has Canadian provinces. ü

Also, that GodFinger app is oddly amusing.

Anyone know of any metroid/castlevania type of iphone games out there?
The Deep is Metroid-ish. I've owned it for a long time now but have only put an hour in to it so I can't say how good it is, but the little I played was decent.

Oh jesus. I saw the update, now I need to grab it... :D :D :D

Monster Feed HD is an interesting game for TD fans. It's a set path tower defense, but you have active spells you can launch by touch targeting, which makes it a bit more interactive. There are 2 characters with different spells.

You also have to touch to collect money for power ups.

It's on a 99c sale today, I'd recommend at least checking out the lite version.

EA's doing the sale on the UK store now. Mirror's Edge, R-Type and others 59p.
Damn you! Now you've made me buy my 4th game in 2 days :D

Mirror's Edge is on sale in Sweden as well, so I guess the others are too.

I was pretty excited for Bit Trip Beat, but oh boy is it hard to play (imprecise controls) on my 3GS. I guess it could be much better on iPhone 4, because of the gyroscope, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone right now.

I might be in the minority but I'm playing it on an iPhone 4 and I find the controls head-bangingly frustrating, whether touch or tilt.

I really wish I hadn't picked it up but I'd heard good vibes about the console version.

Do I remember correctly that people were complaining about R-Type? Is it any good?
It is very good, but I havent been able to proceed beyond level 5 or level 6, the controls are as good as it gets, but simply not good enough for later levels

but you can bet that I got enough playtime for my $.99 from the first five levels

Peru said:

No, R-Type is pretty awesome. I prefer it over the Cave SHUMPs myself (nicer priced too), though the game involves a lot of memorization and dying at times, and is not one of the easier SHUMPs you'll play. The only complication is that with the touch controls you sometimes end up blocking your view, so if you get enemies on the behind you you need to be careful. There's also tilt and d-pad controls, but the game's supposed to be hard, so I don't mind terribly.

what sort of scores are people getting in Bookworm? What score is respectable D:?

PopCap has got to be one of the most mis-managed huge companies there is. Why they aren't on top of stuff is beyond me. Hoping for updates is like hoping to win the lottery.

Even logical stuff like them porting all their new games is too much to ask, for instance, what possible reason could they have for not releasing Bookworm Adventures 2? Maybe it wasn't that great a game, but I still liked it more than the first.

Their ETA for PvZ2 is 2011-2020. Their about as bad as Blizzard or Valve, except for an even more casual audience.

They just sorta suck when it comes to support / releasing titles, but I do enjoy a bunch of their games.

Yeah I agree, I have to rub my eyes every time I see their list of iOS games and so many of their hits aren't ported. Does anyone know anyone there? Can they ask WHY WHY WHY WHY.

Tilt is perfectly accurate on the iPhone 4.

Yup hahah it's something I've been asking for years. And yet here we are still!

The Wii version is the way to go. It's getting a PC release later on if you don't have a Wii.

Oh man, last night's update of The Incident is amazing. The ability to use my iPhone as a controller for the iPad version of the game is fucking incredible. Every game that can take advantage of this should be doing it.

I haven't had any problems with tilt controls on Bit.trip. I actually find it more precise and therefore easier than the Wii version.

I feel the EXACT same.

My new game was just released on the AppStore

Icon-1.png

The game is called Chrominance. It's based on an original gameplay idea, with some elements that should be familiar to most of the iOS gamers. In Chrominance the screen is divided in colored geometrical shapes. The goal is to mix the colors of the bubbles that appear on the screen to match the background color in the zone of the collision. The user can flick the bubbles with one or more fingers, when two of them collide they will mix their colors and generate a paint splash of the resulting color.
It's a simple concept, really easy to pick up, but hard to master in the higher game levels, where the colored zones are smaller, requiring precision and the ability to think on your feet.

There are 2 main game mode in Chrominance: Classic mode where you advance through harder levels and Time Trial mode, where you race against time to obtain the higher score possible. On the iPad there are also two Versus modes for local multiplayer.

Chrominance is a universal application, designed carefully to give the best gaming experience on both the iPad and the iPhone. The Retina support was delayed, but is currently in review from Apple, and should be available in a couple of days.

Chrominance supports OpenFeint 2.7 and Game Center, where available. There are 28 achievements to unlock and global leaderboards for the two main game modes. OpenFeint is integrated seamlessy with the game interface: all notifications are rendered with the game graphics, the friend leaderboards and high scores are rendered in the same game context, so that the user is costantly aware of what friend and score he should try to beat (OF challenges through PUSH notifications are also supported).
Since the game is a universal app, the game data is saved in a OpenFeint cloud, so that the user can keep his settings and stats even when he changes device.

Chrominance also features an original soundtrack, composed and performed by talented musicians, that's perfectly suited with the colorfull mood of the game.

You can find more informations, screenshots and video of the game on the EflatGames page:
