How painless is switching over the Authenticator to a new phone?
Very easy, as long as you remember to remove the old one from your account before you get rid of it if you're doing that. If you don't have the old phone you won't be able to log in and you'll have to go through Blizzard's customer services.

Just thought I'd share this:

Wallpapers are fun :D

Three different versions of that wallpaper can be found here:

Excellent, thank you.

why are you guys whispering?

Just got my gelaskin for iphone 4 in the mail. I don't see why anyone would wait for a white iphone 4 when you could just get a black one now and put one of these beauties on. (I'm just exaggerating, the white iphone does look kinda cool)

Considering it fixes the antenna problem and only cost 14.95, you all need to get one NOW if you're one of the people who say they like to use the phone naked. Took me a long time to decide, there was so much great artwork available. Really happy with my choice.

Really makes you appreciate the form factor of the 4 as well, the flat edges make these gelaskins so much better when applied than I think the 3gs/3g versions ever could be.

I regrettably had to take the picture with a 3GS, the 4 camera has so much more color! :(

Glad you like that skin, but it looks hideous to me.

Naked 4 life.

No worries :) to each his own.

I don't quite feel the pics do it justice, it really looks stunning in person IMHO.

The wallpaper is a bit of a letdown however, but the back more than makes up for it.

You have to add an Asian keyboard first. Japanese ten seems to work. Then the editable dictionary will show up. I don't believe apple wants you to use it, so it is hidden.

No need to tell me. I spent $80 on a Vaja case for my 3G and everyone said I was crazy. And now I love the way the phone looks so much that I don't want any case.

Just want to make sure. "usage" is very nonspecific. If it were 16 hours with the screen on or making calls, I wouldn't ask.

But it's been with relatively minimal talking. Things like Pandora used with the screen off (locked).

~20% of it was drained overnight, mostly by an alarm clock app I installed that requires it to be left on and the screen locked in order for it to work. All 7 of those hours counting towards "usage" even though I'm not using it per se.

Maybe when the batt hits 10% today and I charge it up, I'll reset the usage info, not use that alarm app and see how it goes.

I've been using the phone to post here today. I'm streaming NPR in the background. Since the post I made (that you quoted) the phone is down to 15%.

So NPR streaming + GAF + 3G = 8% in ~20 minutes or so.

That's why I ask. :)

really late reply, but one thing you may want to consider is lowering the brightness. I get easily twice or more battery life when i lower the brightness down from max. I find the minimum unusable in most situations but 25% to 50% brightness is usually enough for anywhere but direct sunlight.

It may sound like a stupid suggestion, but if all you're doing at times is streaming audio through 3g, why not just use edge? After jailbreak is released you can even put it into sbsettings to turn off 3g. Edge should be more than enough for audio streaming.

I've never had my brightness all the way up. I think it'd burn my eyes. I usually have mine at half or less.

but yea, I'm getting great battery life. typically after 24 hours, I'll have about 35% battery left. that's a day of running with bluetooth audio headsets, maybe 30 minutes worth of call time or more, web browsing view wifi and 3G, Pandora, etc.

battery life is smokin. and unlike Android, no micromanagement necessary.

and I will jizz the day the jailbreak is released. I miss MyWi and SBSettings like nobody's business.

the iphone 4 really blows other phones away with just the way it looks. The damn thing is so light too. I was considering getting a bumper case but I don't think it'd feel anywhere near as comfortable when I'm holding it so I doubt I'll do that.

Also just looked at some of the vaja cases and that doesnt sound crazy at all, they look pretty nice.

I hear ya man, I couldn't agree more. battery life blows the other iphones out of the water. That alone is enough to justify dealing with the strip/grip of death.

Can you actually expand on the android micromanagement you seem to know about? One thing I remember when the evo was first released is people were mentioning they only got a few hours of use before the battery went completely kaput. Does this change much with power management? I'm surprised this isn't a huge point of contention when people claim the evo 4g is like the next coming of christ compared to iphone 4.

The jailbreak is going to be so amazingly awesome, I can't wait. I'm looking forward to real backgrounder multitasking with that freacking 512mb ram....*drool*

^ oh, and I never turn off BT or wifi. :D

re: the 512MB...I try not to think about it, because when I do I start feeling like apple conned us iPad buyers. there's no reason why devices launching so close to each other in date couldn't have both had 512MB of ram. iPad really could use it.

Vaja cases are really nice, but they totally cover your phone and for a not so pretty phone like the iPhone 3G or 3GS that could be an improvement in looks, but the 4 is so sexy that covering it should be a crime against good taste.

Just got my little $2 headphone jack adapter in the mail, finally I can plug my iPhone 4 into my car's MP3 input while wearing the bumper. Feels like iPhone 1 all over again :lol

That sounds ridiculous, I didn't know the bumper hearkened back to the days of ye olde metal iphone. I remember buying like 3 little mini headphone extensions and cutting off the shielded edges with a leatherman. Hilarious I had to do that for a popular phone. It's rather jarring using an unshielded headphone adapter, looks wrong.

:(

Are you sure this fixes the antenna issue? I've been holding off upgrading my 3G since how I normally hold drops the signal on the 4. I've had a gelaskin on my 3G since I got it and like how they look. If that works I'm in for a new phone as Android phones are just not there yet.

Honestly I feel that the it's easier to hold the phone with the bumper than without it. When it's naked I feel like I'm gonna drop it.

That's great about the BT and wifi, I remember BT killing my 3g back in the day. The wifi is one of my favorite improvements, such low power that it runs when the screen is turned off.

I actually have had a 2G that i got for $300 when 3G's came out, got a free 3G a year later by chance, used a 3GS sometimes but never had one, and now an iphone 4. Just now comparing the 3GS and the 4, i see what you're saying, it does feel the tiniest bit heftier than the 3GS, but the solidity of it compared to the 3GS like you mentioned and the smaller total volume has made it feel lighter somehow which is rather amusing.

I felt weird about the increased ram as well, being a fellow ipad owner, but I've come to terms with it. in my experience 256MB has seemed to be more than enough on my ipad when you do one thing at a time, and using sbsettings to monitor the ram available you can make smart decisions about whether to background another app. I wonder if the only reason they upped the ram to 512 was because of iMovie? You would think if they put 512 was because of multitasking preparation that they would have no excuse to put only 256MB in the ipad since they said since day 1 that multitasking was coming in the fall.

I've noticed no major problems with the ram situation on ipad, so I don't expect any in the future. One way to think about it in the context of a standard computer: one reason to have more than 2GB of ram would be because games use so much RAM when they are running, but you could just not multitask when playing that one game, in much the same way that on ipad for a particularly demanding app/game just force yourself to only run that one game.

One last thing that deserves note about ram is that safari in ipad is complete trash in the way the cache is handled. This is the one thing that I think could benefit from additional RAM, safari with multiple tabs open shouldn't clear like every other tab when you open a new one. iCab mobile handles this quite well in fact, it's tabbed browsing doesnt kill other pages very quickly or at all I think, and you notice because after you have 10-20 tabs open the app with crash. This would bother me but after I get more than 10 tabs open I think I'm just stressing it farther than I should anyway so I'm not bothered by it crashing after that point. Reload icab and all the tabs are still there but not loaded, I just wish there was a button "de-cache all other tabs" or something like that, then I'd be ultra happy with it.

absolutely. I can confirm 100% that I can't death grip the phone now. All it takes is a (particularly well made) sticker! :-D

(my house is low signal ATT to the point that I used to be able to death grip easily)

I can see that. I imagine it may be much easier to hold with the bumper on, but one alternative solution would be to get a gelaskin, I can now successfully hold the phone in the most powerful death grip I can muster and the signal doesn't drop even with 0-1 bars.

Death grip the phone naked and see if it feels like it's gonna drop, my opinion is that it doesn't feel like it's going anywhere and that will give you an idea of what it's like with a gelaskin on since you can't barely even feel the gelaskin and it doesn't affect the signal.

yeah, but I don't death grip it in my normal use so there's no point. The bumper really is the perfect solution for me, drop protection, better grip and still have the majority of the phone exposed.

I've noticed this too. I've not felt comfortable holding the naked version in my hand, the thinner depth and squared-off angles make it not nearly as ergonomic as the contoured 3G/3GS. The bumper fixes that though and makes it feel much "safer" to hold.

Hey iPhoneGaf.

I'm a Verizon customer with a day one Moto Droid (November of last year).

I've been thinking very much about switching to the iPhone 4. However, it would cost a bit to get out of my contract and start a new one, etc.

Personally I'm getting sick of Android's fragmentation, etc, etc but this isn't an Android hate thread. I love Android but I don't see it as what I want to use on a day to day basis.

Anyway, think it would be worth the cost for me to switch over? I'm really torn on this one.

Absolutely. It's not even really a fanboy remark to say that this is the best smartphone available, hands-down. The screen is awesome, the brightness apparently beats out the previous winner for brightness: the 3GS (some techie site confirmed), the app store is basically unrivaled, it sips power when you aren't playing a game because of the A4 which also creates unrivaled battery life, the back plate is easily removable/replaceable which even makes the battery possibly user-replaceable (i wouldn't know), the stability is very compelling, I believe it has the most active hacking community (jailbreak support and unofficial apps), it looks beautiful (this would appear to be the consensus of anyone with an opinion about it) and has the best reception of any iphone and probably any ATT phone.

The antenna thing is a non-issue as long as you plan on getting some protection (as well you should for any smartphone). There was also an article saying that the download/upload speed of the iphone 4 is unsurpassed by other 3g devices. Something like twice as much as a 3GS to the point that even death gripping it in an acceptable signal area gives it higher throughput still than a 3GS.

You even have better chances at having a better screen since all phones have the chance for dead pixels but the retina display means they're harder to see. I know, because I've seen one on my dad's iphone 4 but you have to be 4 inches from the screen to see it.

The only thing I can see being a problem for newcomers to ATT is the new plans are not unlimited. I am grandfathered in but I don't think I go over 2GB/month anyway.

All of that said, it would suck to have to pay an ETF to verizon, maybe try trading contracts with someone or putting your line on vacation or something? I've read you can maybe get 6 months of $10/month "i'm out of the country" service or something, that sounds like it would be a great idea to run out a lot of your contract.

shwimpy said:
So I finally got a summer job and the first thing I'm going to buy is a smartphone to replace my ghetto 3 year old slider. Thing is I'm currently on ATT and the reception is horrendous. Everywhere I go whether it be Burbank, Los Angeles, or Irvine, it's really bad. I swore to myself that I would switch to Verizon ASAP but I want the iPhone 4 so bad. Do you guys think it will make a difference (reception-wise) based on the quality of the phone?

I do believe the iphone has the best ATT reception of any ATT phone, so your best bet is to try it out, see how it works and return it if you aren't impressed. Beware though, the phone is so good at everything besides being stuck on ATT that you may justify keeping it anyway. Don't forget you can get an ATT microcell and get perfect reception wherever you put it, which really isnt a bad option seeing as how you can get a $100 rebate for signing up for unlimited microcell minutes and later canceling the unlimited plan and keeping the rebate (I believe). There's no contract (I was told) which means theres not exactly any reason not to do this.

I usually go caseless with my iPhones, but decided to pick up a bumper for my 4 for drop protection. That said, I don't know how, but before I got the bumper I ended up with a small micro scratch on lower back on the phone.

I too have never scratched the glass on any iphone I've had, and I use them unprotected for almost the entirety of their existence. However, right before I put the gelaskin on today, I noticed two small micro scratches on the back that I'm surprised somehow managed to get there. I'm almost entirely certain that the back of these phones are either not gorilla glass or aren't treated with the same anti-scratch chemical that they talk about all the time about iphones.

I finally got a chance to play around with this phone today and its really an improvement over my 3G. Just the speed and the camera make me want to upgrade. The screen is nice though it wasn't a big difference.

The antenna issue is a big thing though. I thought it was over blown but just holding in my hand naturally caused it to drop 4 bars. It's not an issue with how I hold it making calls, but it is in portrait mode when using apps or games. I really can't believe this made it to production. I don't know if I can give a company money for creating a product with such a large flaw.

It's true, the antenna has a bit of a design flaw, but fortunately for me and many others who obsessively use cases in order to protect their phones mostly from scratches (I hardly ever drop my phones), it's a complete non-issue when you use a case. It's fun to be angry at apple for a design flaw, and I do wish they would man up and admit their mistake and/or subsidize bumpers but I can't personally fault them when everything else about the phone is amazing and it doesn't affect you when you're being smart and using a case :-/

The camera is rather amazing, especially when you compare it directly to the quality of the previous iphones. I casually was screwing around with the camera and seeing how some pictures turned out when I noticed how nice an ordinary yellow colored piece of notebook paper looked in a photo I took of it. On a whim I took a picture of the paper with my 3G and I could barely even tell the paper was yellow! The 3GS made the paper look a little sharper but it still looked like a surprising shade of grey rather than yellow. This is simply the most amazing thing I've noticed about the iphone 4 so far.

yellow paper: 0
iphone 4: 1
3G/3GS: -20 billion

yeah I see your point. In normal use I wouldn't consider using a death grip but I also don't think I'll drop it in normal use either. If I'm walking from my car checking something on the phone however I imagine it will be rather natural for me to death grip it somewhat, case or not.

One thing I remember doing with my original iphone and later my 3G was that I had this snapping hard plastic griffin case (that my dad is actually using as an interim solution until he gets a proper case). What I would do is I would put the case on whenever I left the house or charging it or something, and whenever I wanted to actually use the phone, I preferred the case being off and would take it off. After a while I just stopped using the case entirely because I was always taking it off and putting it back on often enough to be annoying.

Anyways, that's why the gelaskin works for me. It protects it from scratches and I'll never need to take off a given case when I want to use the phone. I imagine I would even do this for the bumper, and although the bumper i'm sure is easy to take off and replace, I'm glad I don't have to even consider it. I may get a bumper in the future though, right now if I dropped it it's like like i have any shatter protection!

The grip of death is a pain. Thankfully it doesn't affect WiFi or I would have returned the phone by now. I can unintentionally set it off even with the pinkie of my right hand. For shame Apple. :(

i wasnt going to admit it until you just did but yea i like full brightness too. I would probably try to keep it low if i was worried about battery but in even a small amount of sun the screen will be barely readable. It's rather funny that these days its not the power of the phone that kills it quickly but rather just the brightness of the screen. Kinda cool but kinda hilarious too.

I've come to terms with the grip of death, I was always annoyed with how i felt like i had to delicately hold the damn phone but after i realized i wanted a case anyway everything fell into place. Now i have this glorified sticker (but really beautiful and inexpensive) all over my phone and the problem is solved. Of any problem the iphone could have, I have to say I'm glad it's this hilarious one rather than random crashes or overheating or something.

Weren't the recent imacs having some sort of yellowing problem? It's amazing that a company like apple could let something as ridiculously cheesy as that happen to their beloved underpowered overpriced computers.

Yeah I know. It was a joke.

In all seriousness, how the white would change over time (or rather, the two years I will have this phone) was something I considered and part of the reason I didn't wait for the white.

Goddamn a couple bits and pieces of plastic and wiring you can't stock like a crazy person in your store? How many times have I gone to a store to be told "of course" we're sold out of the fucking camera dongle. And ordering online takes a month or more to get to you.

And now that is repeated with the effing bumper case. I'd have bought one by now if it weren't for apple being out of stock everywhere. What the hell, apple? You're selling a "case" for like 1 billions % markup and you cant be bothered to have any ready to purchase? You're obviously a steaming pile of capitalism shit if you can't make that scam work.

/realizes the hilarity in me being angry that I can't buy this overpriced crap
