This is the year. I can feel it, I've never thought the past few E3s that we will finally see it, but this is the year. Sony needs this game this fall, there's a big empty space in their lineup this fall and I think it's TLGs time.

So I get the idea of TLG finally coming out in some form to help bolster Sony's fall lineup, but I honestly don't understand this whole thing about it being THE BIG FALL GAME

ICO's sales were tepid, and SotC fared quite better for what it was but it wasn't exactly burning up the charts, especially compared to other Sony titles.

Sony will be counting on people to buy PS4s for third party titles. Even with TLG's well known notoriety, the amount of people who will actually go out and buy an artsy puzzle platformer about a little boy and his pet monster is nothing compared to the amount of people who will buy Assassin's Creed again.

.

I think TLG, if it's released, would have the potential to sell about as well as Bloodborne. A big niche game. It would sell a good number, but not be a mass audience kinda game (unless the story and gameplay reached TLOU style praise)

I feel like if there's anything with regards to The Last Guardian at this year's E3, it'll be a short teaser with a "MORE COMING SOON" and another few months for Tokyo Game Show or the PlayStation Experience before we see anything else.

This is it guys, i can feel it, its happening this year!!! 2015 !!! I honestly wonder if anyone kept their tlg preorder reciepts from 2009.

If it dies, I recommend a blood seance to figure out what happened. Perhaps a small donation from Y2Kev?

That said, I think think the fact that nothing has been said about it this close to E3 is a good omen. Yoshida was sure to let us know early that it wasn't making an appearance, but that was also during the Russian cancellation rumors. I'm hopeful this year will be the year, more so than usual.

I'm always curious about the sales of ICO but clearly they were given greenlight to have free reign in designing SoTC, a game which exceeded the previous game's reception and expectation despite designing under the same conditions.

Isn't that the case with ICO & SoTC on the PS2 era? You can replace TLG with those games and Assassin's Creed with GTA. There not games designed for the wide audience, never has and neither were recent games like Bloodborne and the upcoming RiME. I'm pretty shocked that we're still using the blue-ocean games to make the comparison.

and people wonder why we get the same open world games shootbang games over and over.

sigh. such is the state of the aaa today.

really? i thought trico is only because of the name and nothing else.

iko - ico
niko - codename for sotc
toriko - trico, again to follow project name tradition.

wikipedia (The last guardian) said:
The Last Guardian* 's story follows that of a boy who is trying to escape from a setting resembling the ruins of a large expansive castle.[6] The game will revolve around the developing friendship between the boy and a giant, feathered creature, resembling a griffin, named Trico (トリコ Toriko?).[7][8] The name of the creature can be taken to mean "prisoner" (虜 toriko?), "baby bird" (鳥の子 tori no ko?), or a portmanteau of "bird" (鳥 tori?) and "cat" (猫 neko?).[9]

I missed out on the dog for prisoner but that's the last reference I remembered.

In all honesty this is kind of why I've fallen out of favor with TLG. It feels like so many more interesting games have come out that have capitalized on Team Ico's similar kind of art-focused game design in the years of it's absence. As much as I love Ico and SoTC, I was only excited for TLG in the context of the gaming state at that time. Nowadays I can't muster up that excitement after the void was left filled by other developers, and if it is revealed chances are I won't even be excited for it. I'll just pick it up, enjoy a playthrough and then not touch it again for months.

So if the game doesn't appear till the end of the year anyone here taking any challenges? Public head shaving? Walking the town square naked?

Edit:

Largely they still do. What's more perplexing is they do so as a function of wait from announcement, so things shown too early especially with baked stuff suffer the most. Then people like to ignore the scale of these projects. (were they really in full production for 6 years? Were they shelved?)

Maybe it's just misuse of the word "hype." I WANT The Last Guardian to come out, and I WANT it to be good, but if it's not an amazing game I wont be surprised. It'll be more like "well it makes sense that it's not amazing, it was in development hell for six years."

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets panned by the press all the same. Though, this isn't the PS3 era anymore. When the PS3 had come out, pretty much everything Sony did was scrutinised in this way. Like Sony had killed people's families.

Eh, to be honest even though I love that sort of game and think there are some really amazing ones (Journey in particular) I still don't think anyone's been able to reach the heights of SotC.

Hi everyone, my name is Cess!

Oh man, to think it's been more than a year of this. I feel so... hollow now :(

UPDATE 4 Pre-E3 2015: This is it people E3 time.... again! I think this E3 our support group deserves some answers from Sony. The way I see it they have three options; A) Show us something new regarding its development, B) Tell us a firm date of 'when' they plan to show us something regarding its development, or C) Announce the game is cancelled. Here's hoping this E3 we get the answers we are hoping for. Happy E3 to all of the 'Crazy Person' support group!

I don't know how much i can keep doing this. I... I want it to be real, but.. but, my faith is fading :'(

This still cracks me up tho. That Y2Kev line lol

No doubt, I realize my comment is kind of like saying that a 3D Mario would lose any value if current gaming was still saturated with 3D platformers. It's probably still going to be great definitive experience of it's genre, but couple the last half a decade of games since then and some very coy carrot-stick approach to acknowledging it's existence kind of lost me to the degree that I'll only get excited once I'm actually able to get it.

At this point it has to be coming soon. otherwise why not cancel it after all this time? I'm team #believe in e3. If not no biggie. Can't miss something i don't have. It's win/win. I'll at the Chicago viewing for the Sony press con. Would be the perfect reveal.

One can dream...

as for me it makes tlg all the better.

ico and sotc were just way ahead of their time. even now, you wouldn't really find games that are like them. yes, there are a lot of artsy-fartsy, but no games really take that plunge the same way ico and sotc did.

even now, are there actually games where you play as this weak boy who only carries a wooden sword, 99% of the game is only made up of two characters, speaking in a language no one understands, using context to make out what the story is, with majority of your time doing nothing but solving complex and intertwined puzzles in a grand setting, all while in a giant escort mission, with clunky combat (which represented ico), and such a simple yet riveting way of storytelling, amazing soundtracks?

there's a reason why even developers admire those two games. while i never finished sotc, it just blew me away even on the ps3 after i've already finished games like uncharteds and god of war, etc.

still, to me, the storytelling aspects, game design, etc. are just head and shoulders above those that cram dialogue options, cram collect-a-thon quests in an open world. you got two games which don't have a question mark quest at every corner, yet the environments are vast and alive and otherworldly, a crazy small amount of dialogue and in some other made-up language to boot yet the exposition just comes across the screen. then you have a minimalist game design which doesn't insult the player. you're left to figure out everything besides the controls. actually, those games are on the hard side.

i really can't praise those games enough.

Preemptive damage control in the off chance this game ever comes out?

There is no AAA game that has capitalized on what made Shadow of the Colossus great - none. There is no title out there that comes close to replicating it. The indies that have tried not only have they lacked the scale and production values (even with the advances in tech) but the emotional undertones that immerse you into the world and make you care - the "feels". The emotional impact - it's just not there.

So to suggest that there is anything in the market that could offer a substitute for Ueda™ games is just imo wrong - without having to resort to receipts™. Similar games in art direction - well yeah, there are similar platformers to other platformers. Likewise for FPS, TPS etc, etc... - that's not saying much. When it comes to substance - the games are simply not close - IMO.
------------------------------------------------------

As for sales - well, I remember Uncharted being dismissed as a low seller. Quality, pedigree and great experiences go a longgggg way in winning people over. The sales-anti-hype crowd - shooo!!! shooooooo!!! :)

The bolded is a hugely subjective view point to see this from, especially when something like Journey hit me with greater emotions than any of the Team Ico games, and I'm not saying that as a slight against their games either. For me it's just a matter of Journey really being that good.

This isn't a matter of replacement as much as it is a sense that I can't hold onto six years of excitement even if it is an Ueda game. Not until I get to the point I'm actually able to play it.

Well you said it yourself - Journey is not Ico or Shadow of the Colossus - different experiences. There is no substitute, just different stuff out there....and you're ok to have the preference of one over the other.

As for excitement, well the game will be as fresh as there is. Not many people had "excitement" going in when playing say, Journey. I went mostly blind after reading about the game getting praise. Fresh experience is fresh - and much needed. People are not only expecting the feels, they are also expecting an evolution in scale and production values to go with it when it comes to TLG. That keeps me I guess, excited - because there is nothing out there that'll be close to my knowledge - nothing that's announced is - not Rime for sure (and I am hyped for that game too).

Yeah, it's a fair view point to have really, and if we get to a point that TLG manages to make a big impact on the gaming sphere then that's for the better. I'd say it could heavily use more introspective games like these to take the forefront.

They HAVE to know the effect this would have on gamers (ALL OF THEM) if they announced something. Even show the exact same one from 09 with better graphics. It would dominate the blogs, forums etc.

I think it is apropos that a user named M_Night is behind this. Much like the filmmaker, the game once showed promise and now continues to disappoint year after year.

The Last Guardian is actually one of the largest social experiments in the world. Top psychiatrists around the world paid Sony and Ueda to start the 'project' to see how long people can hold on to hope after it was announced even when everything points to its nonexistence. The experiment will only truly end once there is only one person left who has not given up hope that the 'game' will come out. That person will be identified as the last guardian and they will be transported to a top secret facility in the swiss alps where scientists will examine the patient. These researchers hope to one day understand the human psyche and how to combat feelings of despair in the world population.

It was marketing for Danganronpa 3 all along.

Well their first party output has been meager at best and the outlooks seems pretty lackluster given the comment Andrew House made.

The Last Guardian will be the last game in Sony's conference this year.

Some people in the crowd will cry, some will laugh, some will scream, some will cry/laugh/scream at the same time.
