It's because there likely isn't a source. A lot of it appears to be speculation wrapped up in the aura of legitimacy.

Can you tell us if the polish the game has gone through has resulted in the game better than its original vision ? Is the game Better than what they envisioned it to be at launch ?

You know, he never painted a good picture of Sony, it was actually a desaster if the stuff about SSM is right.
The message behind it was clear, people leave all the time, once in a while a project fails or people leave for personal reasons.
And he explained that Sony had alof of structuring to do after they made alot of false decisions with the PS3.
You might renember the arcticle from Kotaku about Sony Japan...
It pretty much fit's the picture...
So we've got people leaving for personal reasons, creative differences and of course a new structure for the company.
This is nothing unusual...

Given that emotions are a little charged right now, I don't really want to weigh in too heavily and offer what may come across as an official NeoGAF position on this right now, but I really wanted to single out that this is not a good justification for offering hearsay. Without speaking specifically about mortimer, I think it should be pretty obvious that any legit or pseudo insiders have at least some responsibility to exercise discretion in what they pass along.

Plus some of his insider info are quite a far leap into the future, which makes it impossible to verify anytime soon.
In all fairness, you see Pete's name a lot as a "GAF Insider" on N4G article links and the tweet could just be a response to a wider range of backlash and not solely about this particular incident.
That being said, if he hasn't apologized already he certainly should.
EDIT: Also, I only have so much sympathy for someone who puts them self out there giving information (true or not) in highly contentious fanboy waters. I currently have the tiniest piece of what could be technically considered insider information about a totally unrelated topic but I'm sure as hell not putting anything out there because my skin is way too thin.
Dodgy, agenda oriented, or bad "insiders" in general are no different than astro turfers.

I hope that this situation makes people start treating developers with a little more respect and not like machines that pump out games. I'm sure mort wasn't intending to disrespect anyone (it seemed he wanted to clear up rumors, ironically), but his willingness to make HUGE assumptions about a person's abilities and professional skills deserved to be called out for what it is.
I see this happening a lot lately. The Dark Souls 2 downgrade thread in particular reached disgusting levels of disrespect, with some posters calling the game's developers lazy, etc. Hopefully Col's honesty provides us with a better perspective on all of this.

I agree, I didn't really mean that as an excuse, it's more of a point to say it's likely he's got no more real info on much of this than many here, so he should be more clear that's he speculating rather than letting people take his posts more seriously than they should be taken. The fact that people think he has "sources" on a lot of this though is sort of their own fault though; I'm sometimes amazed at the lack of skepticism I see sometimes on things like this.

Wow. Best of luck to you Col and your family. Thanks for clearing the air. I think sometimes people on Gaf can get carried away with rumors and conjecture and it can get to the point where things need to be set straight.
We all need to realize that just because we're on an internet forum, that does not give us the right to say anything we want about anyone we want. Statements should be backed up with fact, not by utilization of an "insider" title appointed by a forum or site.

I am really disappointed at how he handled the situation, he should have apoligised here on these forums to Col regardless of his fate as an insider on NeoGaf.
