Update: Shadow of War does not require internet connection to play

Me: Thankfully my internet never has had any downtime

Also me:

... However, if you read trough the entire thread posted in OP, the developer answers a few questions about offline play. The game is playable offline, but you have to be online in order to purchase stuff with microtransactions, obviously.

Wait, are you saying the game doesn't have an internet requirement to start the game and play it normally?

Edit: I'm seeing some of the attempts to clarify. I can't take this at face value, given the impression of the original question/answer sequence. If the publisher can simply put out a statement saying basically "the game is fully playable offline, as per the previous game, but you'll need an active internet connection to access [loot chests]," I'll be a very happy camper. IF THAT'S TRUE, it should be incredibly easy to say. It should have been simple to say in the first place.

I understand why people get made when they think single player games is always online. If you can play the game offline, then what's the uproar for? Maybe that's why in those same forums there's no uproar over the online thing. Just the loot stuff.

I dont get this fake outrage about a game that required an internet connection....
Its 2017 everything is connected on the internet, even my weight scale got an internet connection!!!

If i play games on steam, guess what i need an internet connection to download the game. If i want to play multiplayers games i think i also need an internet connection....
What is the problem?

Do you mean to tell me NeoGAF had a freak out thread over a misconception?

I'm stunned.

Damn, I was actually looking forward to this game, but yeah, fuck this. Not buying this game (or any single-player game that requires an internet connection), no sir.

Then you miss a really good game. Pretty simple.

Even if its stupid

Always online for a game like this? Sounds weird. Must be some missunderstanding.

But if true, it's a slippery slope to just accept bullcrap like that, that really shouldn't be in the game, just because you don't see a practical problem for you right then.

The game sells lottery loot boxes.

- That's fine, I don't have to buy them. And if I do, lottery is exciting.

The game has an always online requirement

- That's ok, I'm always online.

The game will have excessive DRM.

- NP, I'm not a pirate.

The game will require you to provide a valid credit card even if you don't intend to buy anything.

- Don't see the issue, I have a credit card.

Arrows for your bow is not included, they're micro transactions now.

- So? I prefer swords anyway.

The game will require you to enter a captcha everytime you start it.

- That's fine, I'm not a bot.

Everytime you die ingame, the game will post a Game of Thrones spoiler for you.

- So? Studies have shown that spoilers enhance the experience anyway.

Please no one boycott this game, guys. If this doesn't sell well the devs will just go "oh well, this kinda game doesn't appeal to people. let's shelve it for a few gens" because they're bumbling idiots and wouldn't do any research on why their game didn't sell
If anything, write a few stern letters to the publisher, WB, and tell them this is not okay. But then, spend 60 bucks on the game anyway.

I'll reiterate, the devs are not at fault here and even if their game does fail, they're too stupid to ever figure out the reason why, so you might as well buy it

I need the original.

You won't be able to play an always online game when their servers are down or your internet is.

Meanwhile, a normal offline game i still can be played.

It's really not that fucken hard.

It as if there are people who have shit internet or don't have it at all.

Someone read the entire thread in OP. Post the other posts regarding offline play and shut this down. I'm at work on my mobile at the moment.
To be honest its easy to be confused by some of the community manager's answers because he doesn't quote the question being answered.

But I did find a CM post in that thread that referenced offline:

MonolithJared (Community Specialist) said:
You can't "earn" gold offline. It requires the player to either complete a community challenge or to purchase the gold.
Which would be a strange answer if the game didn't allow any offline play.

But considering the articles and forum posts about this topic I'd expect them to make the game's offline/online status clear enough shortly.

If people bothered reading more posts in the source thread.

i alredy did, and at the same time i looked at the Steam page and at the bottom it says we need broadband connection and not the usual "one time authentication".

lets all hope they do and that the message is that we can play it offline.

It's a breath of fresh air seeing this turn into a meme. God bless you Gaf.

Does it say that for Shadow of Mordor as well? That game had some optional multiplayer elements.

If you follow the links in the OP the CM speaks about offline play which i doubt he‘d do if it’s always online

oh yeah, youre right it does, thats very confusing, i looked at many of my games and at most they only say the one time thing(if they are single player), i also looked at Mad Max and it has no mention about this.

thats one the first things i did, even if it was very hard to because they dont have quotes and all, what really worried me was the Steam page, but since they did the same for Mordor i guess there is hope.

I'm cool with this. I've been always online for the last 10 years now so whateva. As for servers being shutdown eventually I'm only gunna play this one time like most single player games so.

I'm waiting for a sale anyway because I have too much to play during this time tho.

My connection is fine, no big deal for me. Apparently 90% of GAF have terrible connections.

It has nothing to do with terrible connections. Some of us have actually experienced weeks of being without Internet thanks to circumstances beyond our control and not being able to play a single player game in that time to expel the boredom because "it has to be always online" is fucking insane and stupid.

Shadow of War definitely doing everything it can to assert itself into the "Maybe when its 20-30 dollars" category

Online tractions require online, this isn't shocking or controversial. We don't need shit like loot boxes but this isn't a big deal.

OK, the article referenced in the OP has been updated with info from the Monolith community manager.

He says that, "at the moment the game is playable offline".

Of course that "at the moment" part isn't the best way to put something if you want to shut this always-online talk down.

oh man, that "at the moment" is not what we wanted to hear...

if the game ends up being always online, yes it will be a big deal, there is no valid reason at all, it also does not bring any benefit to us consumers.

as long as the game can be played offline normally, I don't care about having to connect to buy loot boxes that I will never buy anyways.
