What shouldn't be carried over to next-gen?

It affects me when the resources would be better used elsewhere in my opinion. I'm sure it's profitable, but so is Angry Birds.
It's a matter of opinion.
Well Sony has to look at things as a business. Putting money into something that continues to be profitable is a great way to spend money, helps give them more money to spend resoucres on other things that aren't Home. Besides, these days so many other companies create content for Home (that Sony get a cut of) that I don't think they put that many resources into it bar the client itself, the occasional space and managing the whole thing.

Online passes and season passes are really annoying to me. The fact that they know they're going to release another $40+ worth of content just bugs me, I don't want to have to pay over $100 for a single game and I don't want to have to wait for some ultimate version that comes out a year and a half after everyone's stopped playing.

And I think online passes have hurt games more than helped. I've come to see a game I want to buy, but hold off because even though I can get it cheaper used, I still have to add an additional $10 to the price just to play it with others.

And also retail specific DLC sucks, I don't mind if it's some promotional plush toy or something like that, but an in-game item that makes the game different from where you bought it just rubs me the wrong way.

*DLC announced before the game comes out.
*Online passes
*Exclusive preorder stuff for individual retailers.
*Early Hardware failure.
*Needing Internet Connection to play games.
*Forced or mandatory multiplayer for each game.
*$60 games
*Paid multiplayer access for P2P
*Expensive Digital Distribution that cost 3 times as much as the physical copy.
*Forced motion controls.
*Paying for online play.
*600p or lower resolution
*Bad framerates
*Lack of Japanese games..
*Expensive accessories
*Games trying to be just like COD.

DLC that isn't substantive.
The "carnival ticket" currency to points system.
The barrage of ads the 360 OS has become.
Retailer exclusive pre-order bonuses (seriously, this shit has gotten ridiculous).
Lack of New IPs (this is usually better at the beginning of a generation anyway).
Weekly Firmware updates (Sony...)

EDIT: Online fucking passes.

1. Hand holding and linearity
2. Overheating consoles
3. Region Locking
4. Always online DRM
5. Lack of colour
6. Online multiplayer just for the sake of having it

Paid DLC announced before game release.

Online Passes.

In game pre-order bonuses.

Exclusive pre-order bonuses.

DRM

Regenerating health in military shooters.

Always online requirements for games that don't need it.

Pay to play online.

Horse Armor.

Online activation.

One platform holding up release of a game on other platforms.

Region locks.

Encrypted/locked save files.

Achievements in lieu of in game unlocks. (they are fine on their own, but devs have resorted to these instead of unlocking in game cheats or items like games used to for accomplishments)

Vita getting crappy ports.

No demos.

Exclusive demos.

No dedicated servers.

PC ports without suitable graphics options.

Proprietary memory cards.

Proprietary USB connectors (on portable consoles).

Charging for multiplayer access

You mean like Xbox Live, or the game itself actually charging you extra to play online??
Cuz if you are hoping for XBL to become free, theres almost a zero percent chance of that.

Unlocking better weapons/abilities with progression.

What?
No no no, isnt that half the fun of playing any action/adventure/RPG game seeing your character get stronger.

I cant live without some sort of progression, even if its getting another weapon that isnt necessarily better just new im happy.
Progression helps me know im well progressing.

I think every RPG would be so much less without characters getting new abilities....wouldnt you be bored by the 20th hour knowing your character will never get any better?

The end of loot?.....Son you crazy.

This is not true. The first PS3 was region free and it was patched into the system in 3.55 FW

Console manufacturers have to be very careful region locking systems in Australia. As soon as a system is locked here, modchips become legal to own and sell

I said that option was always there, but the means wasn't. Midway was original going to region lock Stanglehold, but later backed down after the backlash in 2007. Sony didn't actually add it to the firmware until later, but the publishers could have had the game locked if they chose to.

I also remember the claim of modchip legality in Aistralia from the Persona 4 Arena region lock thread, unless I'm remembering incorrectly that turned out not to actually be the case and it was shot down in a court trial where it was used as a defense. I don't have time to find the post right now though.

No more set in stone pricing for every new game...a bit of this has already started, but we need more 39-49 dollar games...

That's something I'd like to see. Get away from the idea of a "standard" price for all new releases and make tiered pricing the new norm next-gen.

QTEs.
Games trying too hard to be bad Hollywood films.
Shameless shovelware.
Region locks... but it's too late, Nintendo is being stupid about it. At least Sony doesn't care.
Forced motion controls.
Strong FPS domination.
Greedy DLC.

Any game mechanics currently running this gen with better graphics. Next-gen should have expanded the formula dealing with multiple gameplay elements due to the power and tech provided.

Trickle-out release schedules for things like PS1 classics, Virtual Console, Neo Geo Station, etc etc etc.

Please stop doing this.

If they put out one thousand games at the same time, 90% of them would go unnoticed. I can't really blame Nintendo for releasing them at a trickle.

But maybe they could release them faster, I don't deny that.

They take it to extremes though forcing you to buy games you don't want. Rigid models like what SNKP does could stand to mix it up a little.

Cliff hangers ending every game ever produced.

Oh and paying for P2P multiplayer.

Here's my list:

Motion controls
Paying for online play
Online purchases being tied to a console rather than an account
Sub HD graphics
