Which Console is "Saved" More at E3: Vita or WiiU?

Well it sold more than 3DS and 3DS XL combined in Japan last week while 3DS was still getting quality software. (23,500 3DS, 24,000 vita). That's what I call "great".

Weren't sales down for everything except Vita though? Not to shit on the Vita but it's not a good sign if the time it got on top in sales was because everything else sold poorly.

Sony is still not very healthy as a whole company. They will focus on getting the most out of the PS4 and "win" this "consolewar" as good and as fast as possible. The Vita will probably not even be mentioned. That's what I expect.
The Vita already had some time, for now, there is a huge momentum for the PS4, hence they will try to use that for their own benefit.

For the Wii U on the other hand, there's still some major releases in the pipeline.

Would you like to know why it's not "great?" Go back and check how much both PSP and DS were selling during the same time periods and then check how much 3DS and Vita as selling now.

Neither Sony or Nintendo would define their sales as "great."

That market's gone and it's (probably) not coming back. Just the way things are now.

consoles don't get saved in epic explosions of awesome, they get turned around gradually (well, actually, most don't)
there's no real reason for sony to try to save the vita nor is there a sensible strategy for them to do so
e3 isn't a big deal for any company and hasn't been for years

Well considering E3 is when many people chose the PS4 over Xbox One, it seems pretty important. Of course momentum of a console can't change instantly, but the announcements are important in order to build that momentum.

Yeah

The market has changed. It doesn't mean that these platforms all the sudden cease to exist.

They adapt and claim as much of the pie as they can. I think Sony is making the right calls with the Vita given the circumstances. Its profitable and PS4 is cooking.

Up YoY from practically rock bottom is not really worth partying about. Kind of like how Wii U sales increasing by 300% or whatever post-price cut was barely newsworthy.

There's a difference though. Wii U sales increases didn't last long, while the Vita has been picking up steam continually and consistently in Japan.

Cant believe Vita is still getting so much doom and gloom here on GAF

WOW

Uh... have you looked at sales?

Less than 10,000 sold this past month. Meanwhile, PS4 lighting houses on fire in case of demand.

Which platform do you think Sony should support?

Wii U has far more potential to get high quality title announcements than the Vita does. Honestly though both platforms have been a train wreck for both companies. I do find it pretty amusing though that both Sony and Nintendo have a successful platform (PS4, 3DS) and have a platform that's struggling (Vita, Wii U).

I think ultimately both companies will do the same thing, ride out the storm until their successors.

The PS4 is cooking, so investors may think it makes more sense to put more resources behind it than the Vita. Stop production of the Vita so they can make PS4s quicker. No more Vita. Vita discontinued. Shortly thereafter software ceases. Then it's game over.

The Wii U sales boost lasted until the holiday (did anyone expect it to outsell its first holiday with that lineup?), but YoY it's currently also up in the U.S.

Not to mention that any Nintendo competitor will sell better in Japan than the year before when Animal Crossing was still one of the best-selling games that year.

e3 isn't a big deal for any company and hasn't been for years

That is just patently false.

E3 is where the big, splashy, eye-catching announcements happen.

Everyone loved Sony's big coming out party for the PS4 last year and that didn't happen in a random press release. It happened during a big event with all eyes on them. That is the kind of attention and spectacle that only E3 gets you.

The biggest things happen on the biggest stage.

I really don't see either of them being saved. Wii U still has some sales potential, it just won't have enough big games coming out consistently enough for it to ever reach it.

The Vita is dead in the West. There is no saving it, and the only support it will get will be a few Japanese localizations and indies until Sony finally pulls the plug.

Vita supports itself amongst its current audience. It grows in Japan.

Heck the software sales even seemed to have shifted Hideo Baba (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwSwiBt4fXc) who swore up and down that bringing over the Vita tales games was a waste of time.

Either Sony IS supporting Vita or the SALES are enough to justify the support. Either way the system is here to stay

well it hasn't happened yet...I really doubt there's a future for the Vita. the only territory where it isn't completely irrelevant is Japan and that's because it's only halfway irrelevant there.

Sure. But let's just say I dropped $550 on the PS4, PS+ and two games. Am I going to run out and buy a Vita too? Probably not. But a few months, a year or two from now, I might. Especially if LTE continues to grow in popularity, and US carriers continue to increase, or lower the cost of data caps.

Is this guaranteed to happen? No. I just think the Vita has a much better chance of a revival than the Wii U, which IMO is a failed platform with no chance of coming back. The Vita as a dedicated platform in and of itself may be doomed, but sort of evolving into this PS4 extension -- I can see that happening. Especially if it gets PS Now and whatnot.

I feel like Sony could do something to raise awareness of the Vita in their presentation, but they dont seem to care about it.
Wii U... i expect some good games at this year E3, but they wont do anything to "save" the system

Out of Vita vs Wii U, Vita easily takes it hands down. It has tons more Third Party support Sony just announced 3 Sony made games for the system and each niche japanese game seems to selling well because they keep announcing them for the West. Unlike Wii U where we have heard no good news globally from software sales.

Both will have to price cut though, Wii U being the console and Vita being those Memory Cards.

it'll outlive us all!

No, but seriously, it probably will cease production by the end of next year.

Memory cards just got a price cut. They're going to give another price cut? My God, that would be hilarious!

Slightly off-topic question: Since the conversation is currently on the Vita and 3DS, are we even sure if Nintendo is going to have another dedicated handheld device?

The 3DS is the only relevant handheld device and it's not selling anywhere near NIntendo's previous handhelds. This is happening even with the lack of direct competition (PSP sold 80m) and the smartphone market is clearly impacting dedicated handhelds.

By the time Nintendo announces the successor to the 3DS, where do you think the smartphone market will be when it comes to games?

I guess Wii U because it's a Nintendo system and their games still command attention from the mainstream, but the system is dead as far as I know.

The Vita doesn't have many recognizable franchises and dedicated handhelds are starting to become irrevelant in the West, so I don't know what would begin to sell it.

Unfortunate in both cases and kind of sad.

Doubt it

It has really good software support well into 2015 and beyond.

Do your research. Its the best Niche device you can own

Niche being the key word. So it will never be a major success. Sony is hard up for cash so they may stop production if they think they can make more profit elsewhere (i.e. PS4)

yes. they confirmed as much in their investor's briefing.

E3 is more for AAA stuff, so theoretically speaking, the Wii U should have a decent amount of announcements. We'll see Nintendo's big AAA titles.

The Vita's strength has been more in indie development. Sure, we'll (hopefully) see some Gravity Rush 2, but I just don't see Sony giving the Vita much time at E3.

Vita will be there at E3, but it won't be much outside of some indie games coming to it, crossplay mentions, and remote play. I'd wager we'll get more info at TGS. The Wii U will get more press because of what Nin is bringing to the platform this year. E3 will be their big push, with another push for the system at TGS.

I'm going with the Wii U.

None will be saved. Wii U will have the games already announced or hinted that do nothing to people who are not already a Nintendo enthusiast and already bought a Wii U or is going to buy anyway.

Vita will have less conference time even than PS3. They will say "lots of games will be coming', but all indies and ports. They will also announce something that will make people mildly interested, but that will be forgotten by the time it is stealthly released late 2015.

The Wii U. While they may never right the ship, it is still the one that stands to gain the most momentum. The handheld market is being destroyed by mobile and that is not going to change.

While I have and love both. The Wii U have a more promising and 'successful' future ahead especially if we compare to Vita.

Sony doesn't need to do and won't do any hard sell for the Vita at E3. They will give it 10-15mn, show Gravity Rush 2, a new 1st party game and a video with ton of japanese/indies/ports games. Vita will follow its life calmly and modestly in the shadow of PS4 success.

On the other side, Nintendo needs to make a major impact. They really need to make the business and the audience understand they still believe in their console and support it.

E3 is way more important in my opinion for WiiU's career than for Vita's

These are both Dead.

Not sorta dead but dead dead. Neither of them will have any sort of reversal of fortunes, and I find the meager gap between them meaningless for the most part.

The PSP still hasn't ceased production. Think about that for a second.

The PSP sold better than the 3DS likely will. Think about that for a second. Neither the WiiU nor the PSV can look at what the PSP did as a sign of the times ahead. This is a new game.

I think Sony concentrates on the PS4 from now on, so i dont believe the Vita Spot is going to be big. But we will see it as a partner device with some own games. I dont hink they have anything to raise the appeal for the west.

Wii U still have chance to gain GC levels and I think they will show some great 1st Party titles, maybe with 1-3 second/third party exclusive.

So I think E3 going to help the Wii U more than the Vita.

As much as I love my Vita, it's definitely going to be WiiU. Smash, Zelda, Bayo 2
not my game
, X, SMTXFE.

Assuming they have new info/trailers for these, Vita stands no chance in hell.

They're both probably beyond saving at this point. I imagine the Wii U will be the focus of Nintendo's conference (assuming they have one), while the Vita will be given very limited stage time, if any at all. Wii U at least has some big hitters coming with Mario Kart, Smash, Zelda, Bayonetta 2. Vita will have Borderlands 2 and indies I guess? Sony should try to show off the off tv features with the PS4 and Vita.

There will probably be more exciting Wii U announcements at E3 than Vita ones, simply because Vita thrives mostly on ports and indie titles, which generally never create as much buzz as say, a new Zelda title would. Plus Nintendo is kind of stuck with the Wii U situation, where as Sony has the insane popularity of the PS4 to focus on instead. It would be foolish to spend any more time on the Vita than is necessary.

I'm hoping that Mario Kart, Smash, and Zelda really give this system a push this summer, but I feel like not much is going to happen and it's going to continue selling dismally.

The PSP sold better than the 3DS likely will. Think about that for a second. Neither the WiiU nor the PSV can look at what the PSP did as a sign of the times ahead. This is a new game.

Way to miss the point. He's arguing that Sony would consider ceasing production of the Vita to "make PS4s quicker" since the Vita isn't selling that much. PSP sold half of what the Vita did in March, wouldn't its production be stopped first? and why is its LTD relevant in this case?

Nintendo is more likely to actually try, but I don't think either of them will really be "saved." If 3D World didn't move Wii U's, there's not much hope. Mario Kart will already have come out by then and we'll have seen if it helped or not. I don't think it will, much. They'll also show Zelda, which will probably be great, but Zelda doesn't seem to be as big a deal for the average consumer as it once was. Another price drop could help. A real one. Dropping the price of the Pro Wii U to the price of the Basic one (that was too expensive to be appealing) doesn't count.

Sony's just going to keep on ignoring the Vita. The best Vita can hope for is yet more crossbuy indie ports in the inevitable indie sizzle reel.

I have a feeling that this will be Nintendo's last effort to really push the Wii U. If anything can get those systems sold, it will be the announcement of a new Zelda combined with a price cut. I think they bite the bullet and drop it to $149.99 with a $200 Zelda bundle to be released with the game.

As for Vita, I just want to hear if Vita TV will ever stand a chance in hell of coming out here. Otherwise, I don't see them mentioning it.

the wii u's kinda doing shitty everywhere, but it means worldwide it has games that can lift it anywhere. vita's dead in the us (2k/week is sega saturn 1998 territory), maybe better in europe, and doing pretty nicely all things considered in japan. i mean, it's doing so well in japan that it's outselling the wii u between the us and japan. so whatever comes out that will 'save' the platform will probably only interest japan mostly. i get the feeling sony's done as far as dedicating extra effort and resources to the vita in the us. europe's still a wildcard, but given how they have tried different bundles and advertised games like tearaway while scea just kinda let last year happen, i think there will be a push there too.

Only way to save both is by voluntary euthanasia, live on stage, done by the CEO's.

But seriously, the vita has the advantage of being associated with the PS4 (including offplay) if sony continues that, but the Wii U actually has some heavy hitting games planned for release. Mario kart will be marketed heavily (at least I hope for their sake they do) but would sony really put resources into marketing vita by itself? They might as well just place it next to the PS4 it PS4 ads at the end with a *vita companion device sold separately* notice and save some money.

Though don't understand what people mean exactly by "saved"? it takes a while for a system to gradually do better until it stablalises at respectable sales figures. The wii u isn't instantly going to do better permanently after MK8 release. It'll spike for a few weeks, then go back down after june as usual. It's problems lie too deep for one game to fix.
