Why does it seem like people want Deathloop to fail?

I've been playing Deathloop and loving the hell out of it. its a good break from the standard AAA games in that its a very open playground similar to hitman that allows you to tackle the objectives at your own pace. But looking at different sites, forums and user scores it seems like people have an interest in the game being bad or don't believe it is as good as the reviews says it is. I know people love Arkane but what about Deathloop makes it so polarizing for a game that most people haven't played yet? It really baffles me.

it's fine to not enjoy a game like Deathloop if you've played it, but you can even go back to the review thread or OT and get some examples of people calling the game "woke" which I'm sure you can read between the lines as to what that means, and why some choose to target the game and "want it to fail".

I'm looking to try it out myself.

How's the nemesis feature of the game?

Just curious if it's annoying or it's actually something that adds a lot to it.

Its cool, It doesn't get in the way if you don't like it. Plus juliana drops some good loot for your run. But the level design of the game is superb. Arkane is bar none with that.

My theory...

This place likes industry leading production values + very formulaic gameplay + cutscenes.

Deathloop scores low in all three areas for a NeoGAF type game.

Because the game is a mediocrity getting praised by hack critics just because of its agenda. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly not a bad game, just another one of those games we've seen a million times pretending to be something fresh because of a gimmick.

I think that generally people kind of like the game, up to about the halfway point, then they just get bored with the loop. I have seen a lot of people saying that they enjoyed the first 10 hours, but after that, the game gets stale. I agree with this totally. By the time I was done the game, I was well past being "done" with the experience. Game ends up feeling really shallow by the end, and you see that there's a lot less there than it seems at first.

People that praise it get accused of being woke.
People that dislike it are called prejudiced.

Deathloop is simply a game that gives both sets of shitty people a soapbox.

I thought the game was aesthetically top-notch, but the gameplay just wasn't for me.

what is the agenda hear blacks are bad ass??????????????????????????????????

It has a lot going for it. IMO it makes a great first impression but really bogs down in repetition towards the end, souring the experience. Kudos to them for trying something unique tho. Great VA as well for the two main characters. Solid 7/10 overall.

It had an insane amount of trailers regurgitating the same shit over and over (ironic). One or two was cool, but people got sick of it before even touching the game.

its a good game,i dont deny it, but not an "average 10/10 from all critics" kind of game.

The first cons I noticed after playing the game within few hours, is the AI could be better.

But I'm just not interested in it.

Yeah, I don't get it. I'm a big fan of arkane and I'm really looking forward to playing it next year when it comes to xsx

its not bait what is the agenda?
Now, I don't believe this AT ALL, but from what I have seen, I think that some people feel that Arkane is a hardcore woke company that believes that having playable white characters in 2021 goes against diversity and is inherently racist, so they refuse to cast white people as hero characters. Something like that. I think some of that comes from wacky articles like this: https://www.wired.com/story/deathloop-radical-necessity-of-2-black-leads/

Of course, to believe that it's anti-white to cast black characters is FUCKING INSANE, but people are fucking insane today.

Also, Julianna is my favorite black female character in recent memory.

That's cool to hear. Also glad I heard from a friend there's like a dozen outfits for each character. Her default outfit shown in the trailer didn't do much for me, but I saw a video of the other costumes and there was some decent choices for sexy and/or badass looks. Very cool.

Funny balance of a console exclusive for a competing console, maybe, and a lot of people gave it crap after the first PS5 gameplay reveal and they don't want to let go

Did they fix the stutter on camera pan on PS5? I've 1000+ hours in Hitman 2016+ so I really really want to play it but was waiting til thats fixed.

Do they? I don't know, I suspect the game could be fun bit there's something annoying about it, lol. Maybe any game with the word death in it has an automatic negative connotation? 🤔

It's kind of cringe, that people here are doing same thing like on twitter, on the other place and especially on the other-other place, as in

WHY IS THE MAIN CHARACTER <InsertColor>?1?1! HOW DARE YOU!

I didn't play it so I can't judge it myself, but from what I've gathered looking into most reviews (including bad scores) and after seeing playtrough of the game is that the AI is really weak, Denuvo on PC, the game seems similar to Dishonored or Hitman but it lacks the variety of the powers that elevate the gameplay beyond just shooting at ennemies and the environmental kills, multiplayer is too heavily dependent of player courtesy of not rage quitting when getting killed, the game content is basically 4 locations with 8 targets (2 in each locations) there's the agenda controversy and the absurd review scores from the press giving 10/10 in a game where the AI is brain dead and is a step back from Dishonored...

The amount of insane reviews score the game got must have left some players baffled when they bought the game and were left underwhelmed.

I think gamers are expecting perfection and the best game ever made after so many publications and outlets gave it a perfect score to my knowledge. In other words, gamers are expecting the world from this game and any iota of disappointment or imperfection will be called out.

The game was supposed to come out in May so Sony made a big marketing push then it was delayed but Sony still made another big marketing push during the summer (while they were silent about everything else). Then again in September.

It was also all over the PSN store with promos, emails and push notifications from the app. People were sick of it even after all the praise and 10/10.

Biggest marketing campaign ever for a Arkane game.

I played it and I didn't like it. I wanted something like Bioshock but it was Returnal X Hitman.

Could be people not wanting every game to become a rogue lite.
(I heard it's not really a rogue lite but it seemed like one from previews).

say what you will about it, but it's definitely not something we've seen a million times before.

Bad theory. Plenty of games that don't fit your description have been talked about on NeoGAF and there were not discussions about whether people wanted those games to fail.

I think the delays along with multiple subpar previews had the game linger in too many people's mind they just wanted it out of the way and be forgotten about.

Game is great…arkane are very talented and it triggered some folk as they will no longer get to experience these sort of titles is the summary of it

I'm looking forward to what they do with dlc/expansion as dishonoured 2/prey all had great additional content

Pretty much my thoughts on it. Isn't my type of game. Certainly don't want Arkane to fail. They are great game devs.

This, it's bitterness

Perhaps. Of course, all the snarky comments about how Sony needed a MS dev to save its year probably contributed to the bitterness if that is the case. Console war bullshit as usual. Spite begets spite.

Define agenda.
