Why doesn't anybody care about Tearaway?

Ratchet probably suffers more from franchise fatigue and it being a remake than anything else. People just sort of gradually lost interest in the series. It had like a dozen games and the last few were met with relative disinterest. If it was a brand new game going all out I'd bet we'd seeing a lot more excitement.

Also might suffer from presumptions it's a tie-in to the movie which never really helps with perceptions of quality. I mean, it IS a tie in the to movie, I guess.

I honestly feel Sony acquiring MM was a bit of a waste of money. They make charming looking games but they all play like dogshit. Money would being best spent trying to buy back Crash or something instead.

I will give you LBP1, but latter MM games controlled well. LBP2 was much better control wise compared to LBP1 and Tearaway feels amazing to play on Vita. Controls are good-great in their games and they are a very creative studio.

I would love to have Sony own Crash too but its nice having a Sony studio making Nintendo-like games. So, MM and Studio Japan doing this is a win in my book :).

I bought it at launch for Vita. Loved it, one of my top games from 2013. For PS4 I just waited for a sale and got it from Amazon for 17€. I love the game but I can't justify spending 50€ for it in one of the strongest holiday seasons ever when I've already played it.

And that's me, I already know how great the game is. Imagine everyone else.

I really fear for Dreams. The time for the quirky, creative Media Molecule games seems to have passed.

I hope that Dreams has a strong core game part to it or might might bomb harder than Tearaway did X(.

Maybe they could ride off the PS VR hype and have Dreams be a center-piece game for the hardware to ensure its sales success.

Simply too many other games.

Actually. This game will prob be a PS plus freebie some day. Sony can afford it and it won't sell much more now.
I think many people assuming (and very loudly proclaiming) it would be a Plus game (which it never was) is widely accepted as one of the reasons the Vita version did badly.

On topic:
For what it's worth, coming from someone who loves 3D platformers and adored Tearaway on Vita (inc. Platinum), I really didn't get on with Unfolded on PS4. I only got a few hours in before putting it down and I haven't been back yet. It's gorgeous for sure, but seems to have lost a lot of the charm. The lack of camera sections/references (unless you have one) definitely hurts it too.

At first I ignored Tearaway after playing the demo on Vita. Three weeks ago I decided to give it another go.

The game is a real masterpiece! I feel kinda dumb now, for not playing it earlier. After a slow start, the game is so inventive that I could not stop smiling and saying...holy shit....what a great idea! I was really blown away how well the Vita is being used is this game. It's one of the best handheld games I have ever played and the ending almost brought a tear to my eyes. Simply amazing stuff. Just bought Unfolded and can't wait to play it.

I feel like this line of thinking is bs. We need creative somebody has to do it!

But there's a reason people stopped making 3D platformers: people stopped buying them.

Nah developers are just making shit platformers, thats why people stopped buying them. Nintendo platformers sell, you know why? because they are fun to play and good to look at. Same with the Rachet series. If Naughty Dog went back to Jak it would sell aswell.

Maybe if MM stopped making games that played like dogshit then more people would buy them.

I believe it's for same reason why nobody bought Puppeteer and Okami. Artistic games have only a limited audience. People only care about sequels and hyped-as-hell games.

Hm? Ratchet and clank has alil hype not AAA blockbuster hype but its nowhere near the level of teraway

Well, it should have more hype going for it than it does. In fact I think it could be one of the more marquee games of 2016. Visually, it looks fantastic and it seems to be a return to form that the RC franchise on the map.

Because it's boring and devoid of any charm. The game felt like the developers trying to be all arty but instead of letting me experince it on my own the game kept trying to take control from me so they could show it to me.

Plus making player unlock the ability to jump was dumb in a platformer at that point I just stopped playing it.

Tearaway controls fine and it's physics are nowhere near as bad as what is found in Little Big Planet, and definitely not dogshit. For some reason I feel that many also skipped the game due to it being Media Molecule and assuming it controled like LBP. Atleast that was the reason why I held off the game for a few months til I found out it wasn't that bad lol.

So you're saying Tearaway plays like dog shit? Can you elaborate? Is it the controls, the level design?

If the rumored Crash game and Sonic 25th Anniversary are just good, then Ratchet & Clank (next to Persona 5, if it comes out next year, or Neir 2) will be my game of the year :).

Love the series and Up Your Arsenal still stands tall as my favorite game ever made (right after Majora's Mask).

Have high hopes that Ratchet PS4 is the best damn game in the series :).

Most gamers have poor taste, we know this. Mario, Halo, COD rehashed tear after year, they just want comfort food, like McDonalds of gaming.

I played through the PS4 version, and I must say it's one of the most overated games I've ever played. The worst part is the side quests with the blue presents where you just have to paint something random with the touch pad. That's it in order to complete them. And then you have the escort missions................. Otherwise, a very forgettable game.

Troll post? The best CoDs, Halos and Marios are leagues better than Tearaway. Like, they're not even in the same universe.

The game looks like a kids book, it's a real visual tour de force and it's great as a demo but as a full game... Not so much. Plus it's quite boring, I have to admit it. Charming but boring. I bought the Vita game but I totally ignored the PS4 game for that reason.

Tearway would be at like 2mil+ if it was on Nintendo im not even joking. Its a very good game but the audience just isn't there. Hell kid friendly games sell better on every platform.
Then why would it sell better on Nintendo consoles?

I played the demo and it's a very boring game.

I have a Vita. I don't mind artsy/indie type games or games with a simple cutesy art style, in general. Like I have Proteus and Fez on my Vita and enjoyed playing them, among others.

Tearaway just does absolutely nothing for me though. I don't know, I just look at the cover art and it registers a big zero. Don't know what else to say.

The reason I haven't purchased it is because of little big planet. That too is a highly regarded series that I played and got very little out of it.

So I'm kind of thinking that Tearaway will be the same sort of clunky or kind of boring platformer with "charm" but very little heart. I'll play it for five minutes, think "yeah this is nice" and never touch it again.

This may be totally unfair, but that is where I'm with it right now and there are too many other games on the PS4 to make me take a risk.

neurosyphilis

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
People who've seen Tearaway usually care about it, shame Sony doesn't care about it though. Game is amazing and deserves much more. It just makes me so sad that they didn't even try advertising, hyping it.... just nothing..
How does Sony not care about Tearaway ? If they didn't they wouldn't have ported it to PS4 with additional content.

The game has a lot of heart and honestly made me tear up at points. Remember one moment when I got to the first level of the final major world of the game....and I just stared at the sun with Iota, for a good four minutes knowing "....The ride is almost over, isn't it :(?"

When the game was over, I was bawling when the ending popped up.

The game's level designs until the very end aren't that focused on platforming and the game itself is like a Adventure game in many ways. But that doesn't push you away, it sucks you in more. The original Vita game is a classic and if I think about it, it stands on my top 10 games of all time list.

While the PS4 version is different and a bit more bloated, the game still has the heart of the Vita release. Right now if you have a NA PSN account, give the game a shot. Its on sale for 20 bucks on PSN and you could do a lot worse with games at 20 bucks.

How much playtime will I get out of it? Need to use this 20% coupon and not sure what to use it on.

Love LBP (only played the first one).

A lot of reasons:
-They didn't advertise it at all for the PS4 release
-Didn't aggressively market the game like they do for Destiny, Call of Duty and other AAA games

Sorry but even if they put a lot of care into the PS4 version, they did nothing with it to help sell the game.

It's the aesthetic probably. I'm not into super cute stuff myself either, but I gave Tearaway a shot based on GAF hype, and came away very impressed. Just a gorgeous and inventive game, that actually made use of all Vita's features organically. Was a great game.

Here's an old quote from myself:

After beating the game a few weeks ago, I can comfortably say that Tearaway was one of the best games of 2013 that I played. Just so great to see all the functions of the Vita taken advantage of. Gorgeous, gorgeous visuals, even having played KZ: Mercenary which I bought during the PSN sale, Tearaway is the best looking game of the platform to me. The art design is spectacular, crafting a beautiful world of paper. The IQ I must say is also goddamn immaculate.

Hardly a jaggy to be found. These compressed VIta screens really don't do the game any justice either. Hell, no media I saw anywhere did. Only when I played the game myself, did I see how impressive the visuals truly are. Jaw dropping for me honestly, couldn't believe what I was looking at.

No, it's not the most challenging game I've ever played, but honestly I think I prioritize difficulty a lot lower than most people on this board, as far as what I look for in a game. I don't play games to simply be challenged, and I can enjoy an experience like Tearaway because of that. Gotta say though, gameplay really kicked into high gear after the acquisition of a certain item. Almost felt like a Gravity-Gun-lite, really changed up the gameplay, and it truly made the combat fun in the later stages of the game.

I'm 3 hours in and it's really boring, although cute.

If they marketed it people might know what it is. I don't know anyone who knows Tearaway

I'm 2/3 of the way through it on PS4.
The graphics/design: amazing, it was worth it just to look at some of the environments MM put together. Taking photos with the in-game camera is probably the most fun I've had in the game so far.
The actual gameplay: 90% walking around and taking on "draw this" or escort mission sidequests. 10% actual platforming. So that's been kind of a big letdown.

Maybe it'll pick up in the third chapter, but as is I think calling it as a platformer is kind of disingenuous. It's more of a... playable storybook.

I thought it was a pretty neat as an experience, but pretty dull as an actual game. Still worth at least one playthrough at a cheap price

Love LBP (only played the first one).

I remember spending 8-12 hours with the Vita version (100%-ed) and the PS4 version is longer with more levels. So add....about an extra 3-6 hours on top of that. So you can get 12-16 hours out of Tearaway Unfolded if you want to 100% the game. Otherwise it would be just 12-13 hours.

I didnt really like it much honestly, so I can understand people not being that interested, but yeah, probably also not a great fit for the audience of the PS4, would do better on Nintendo or PC.

Already played this on Vita. It's very charming and the style is great but the whole gameplay part was not really the second coming of 3D platforming like it was hyped up by some during its original Vita release.
The gameplay is better than floaty LBP but aside from the visuals theres little that stands out for me.

I would still recommend it at a cheap price to anyone who hasn't played this yet.

Played this on the Vita when it hit bargain bin prices in the UK. The presentation is cool and I liked how it utilised the Vita (in terms of controls) itself very well.

The gameplay and level design is, unfortunately, fairly dull and not very engaging. It's not something I've ever recommended to others to play.

Probably the same reason I haven't gotten into LBP. Artistically I like what they are doing but the gameplay hasn't hooked me. Give me something like Ratchet or the Puppeteer.

I played it but had to stop. The music ranged from really amazing and then got kind of annoying later on. Some of the missions were really boring, and for a 3D platform it felt a little too straight forward.

Then why would it sell better on Nintendo consoles?

I played the demo and it's a very boring game.

So I just checked what part the demo was on YT. Yeah, I don't blame you for calling it boring. Looks like the just used the intro as the demo and that was that. I call it the worst part of the game. The game introduces many new mechanics and much better platforming after the part covered by the demo.

What a bad decision by MM. That section should've been 10-15 minutes at most before moving onto new mechanics but it goes on for like an hour.

So to answer the title: It's entirely on MM and Sony. The narration style isn't appealing to the mass audience, probably would've been better off as text bubbles. And yeah, the first hour is boring, and on top of that using that section for the demo on PSN is even worse.

Is it really audience mis-match? Sony has had other upbeat, colorful franchises in their history of IP's that were successful.

I think being seen as a remaster of a game that was sent to die on the Vita originally is probably what's working against it more.

I think I remember playing a demo of this on my Vita. There was a demo right?

Anyways, I didn't like the game at all. I was actually surprised they were even bothering to bring it to PS4. I guess if people like it, then good thing they're expanding the audience... I just didn't get it, I suppose.

I care for it, though I don't own a Sony device to play it on. (Well, I have a PSTV, but playing Tearaway on that thing is next to impossible.)

I see it as a very inventive platformer with a charming art style and bursting at the seams with creativity that really could've been something huge.

My opinions on possible reasons why:

  • platformer oversaturation - Maybe people are just tired of platformers in general, and despite the resurgence of 3D platformers, not many are convinced to jump back in (or even bother to care).
  • audience mismatch - Maybe the general Sony audience just didn't feel like this was worth a look-see. Also, being a new IP, it had an uphill battle to fight. Bless Media Molecule and all they've done, but I really feel that their work has gone unappreciated for the longest time due to the audience they have to cater to, in my opinion.
  • just another spot monkey - Slipping into wrestling terminology, but a spot monkey is a person who specializes in awe-inspiring feats regardless of whether or not they succeed or fail. In this case, Media Molecule is kinda the spot-monkey of the industry (outside of Nintendo). Tearaway is kinda evident of their style of going above and beyond with the tech they have, so maybe people didn't like that?

Just my two cents. Don't expect much of what I said to make proper sense.
