I think the better question is
Will Disney take more risks with EP8?
Seeing they have a pretty hands-off approach, it's not really.

With Rian Johnson at the helm, you'll hope.
That sounds interesting. Though it's a rumour (as you said) so I'm not expecting it to be true.Spoilers, maybe big:
Luke and Rey meditate together and "walk" through the energy of the force. Finn and Meena have a complex relationship, mostly because of their past with the First Order (she was captured by them and watched her friends die).

I enjoyed the force awakens in terms of fun, adventure and the light comedy. Fin, Rey and Kylo Ren were all fantastic. It did a lot of things right, that the prequels got entirely wrong.
The original 3 star wars movies have a very special aesthetic. The design of the ships, creatures and droids is of the highest possible calibre, fantastically original and iconic. Ralph Mcquarrie is a genius. Special effects industry was so small and specialised back then, probably all the best people in the world were working on star wars.
The prequels only got this vaguely right in terms of costumes and sets, that were quite good in places. But the ships, droids, creatures were absolutely clownish garbage. I hated every ship, every droid, the clone troopers. Everything except Darth Maul. It wasn't star wars quality.
With Force Awakens I feel this base aesthetic was re-established fairly well. The silly, plasticy prequel garbage was washed away. Everything was a bit more grown up and grimy. The original star wars feel was back, and it was important to re-establish that. Was it perfect? Far from it, but this takes me back to your original point...
Yes - it was safe, it didn't have much of anything original in it, it was just re-hasing of core stuff from the originals, and didn't put it's own mark on the universe.
We start in the desert again, then later a planet that might as well be nottingham with sherwood forest beside it. I haven't seen it in a while but I don't remember any original cool new droids, creatures or ships (except Kylo Ren's ship). Mostly just re-colourings or tweaks to base-level stuff we had before, which was welcome in a way, but they didn't augment it with new things.
In comparison, after a New Hope, we got Empire, we went to a snow planet, at-ats, snow speeders, tauntauns, wampa, then the asteroid belt chase, asteroid creature, super dense swamp planet, introduced yoda, cloud city, bobba fet, carbonite, slave one. Jedi had Jabba, rancor, pig guards, bib fortuna, sarlacc, ewoks, tree houses, at-sts, speeder bikes, b-wings, super star destroyers, capital ships.
Also I hated the star killer. There is a new force establishing itself in the universe, and they go straight to deathstar++ for the finale. Stupidly high stakes, where does the new series go from here? Blowing up a a cluster of solar systems? Couldn't they have left something like that for a later movie? And do we really need to blow up 2 or 3 things, can't it just be one planet? Seems like arbitrary, silly ramping up of stakes to the maximum, then multiplying it by three just because.
Instead, a simple star destroyer type ship parking in a planets orbit and starting to level the main cities of the planet with a giant cannon would have been much more visually interesting, and not just a red beam and a 'boom' (x3).
What worries me even more is 'Rogue One'. This looks like the they took the 'safe' of Force Awakens to whole new stagnant levels. I hope it's good. But At-AT's at the beach with palm trees??
The number one reason they chose Rian was Breaking Bad, not Looper and why they were look at Affleck. Someone who could handle the emotion and drama.
Also, Rians pitch for the story won him the job which is why he has sole credit for story/screenplay.
The prequel trilogy wasn't bad because it took risks. It was bad because it was poorly written and directed. It's possible for a movie to take risks and still be good (see The Empire Strikes Back). Honestly I'd rather have something take risks and fail than a paint by numbers sort of movie. Worst case scenario, I don't watch it again. Oh no...
Huh, I didn't know that. Neat! He's also the reason why TFA ended with Rey presenting Anikan's saber to Luke.

I hope they resist the urge to cut someone's hands off and to replace it with a robot one.
I wish Ben did IX.
10 year break between 9 and 10 seems sensible. EDIT: Wait... They are thinking about doing a ren movie?Everyone does. While Colin is writing the script, Rian already set the story in motion so I'm not too worried about a boring story. I'm betting Affleck and others will get a shot with 10-12 in a decade.
Maybe they'll give Affleck the Ren movie or Old Republic (which I heard is the next "epic", episodic story they might shoot for as a 10 year break between 9 and 10 to hold people over since the side stories aren't "big enough"). Believe me, Disney is waiting for 9 to release before they announce their 10 year SW slate.
Too much money at stake for "risk"
It's going to be safe as fuck
This mentality bothers me more than it should.Taking more risks like... the prequel trilogy? No thanks.
I feel like they took a risk casting a girl and a black guy as their protagonists.
That shouldn't be a risk by any means, but we already know it tanked Ghostbusters long before it had a chance to actually prove itself on it's own merits and it probably won't be the last. So leading with minorities was pretty ballsy.
You don't think they've already made their money back through merchandise?Yeah this.
Disney isn't going to start taking risks until they are well in the black on the amount they paid for the franchise. Just because the Ep VII made 2 billion, doesn't mean Disney made 2 billion off of it. Until they are in the black on their investment and they get to the point of diminishing returns, they are going to play it safe as fuck with the franchise.
Would Kylo speaking to ghost Anakin/Vader count as risky?

Part of me wants to see this.
Pretty sure the idea was that it would send him more to the dark side. Don't redeem Kylo. We need a good villainI want this so bad.
Please bring back Christensen and show the world Lucas was the one to blame.
Anakin setting Kylo straight would be great.
Ep 7 did an okay job of setting new stuff up but i just can't get over is the First Order. Just seems like "hey man remember The Empire? yeah...."
like, what kind of threat are they? they just going to build more super death stars to be inevitably blown up. what's the end game, is this just another Dark Lord's army that does things because evil. i know star wars was never particularly nuanced beyond good vs. bad i'd always assumed a sequel trilogy to have a bit different "conflict" to get invested in
i realize the next movie could go either way though
You do know about the anthology films right? They're doing the mainline saga films and spin-offs where they can experiment with different genres. Rogue One is more of a traditional war film for example.
These are new to me. I assumeis Kelly Marie Tran's character?Meena
Source? They've been pretty involved in many other parts of the Star Wars license so I don't know why the movie wouldn't count.Seeing they have a pretty hands-off approach, it's not really.
Maybe read my post next time. I was implying Disney has some say in EP8.![]()

I don't think you hire Rian Johnson unless you want to do something a bit different. Lawrence Kasdan hinted it'll be pretty different to TFA.
For the first weeks a movie's out, there's gonna be marks defending their brand no matter what. Pay them no mind.So the fact Force Awakens being a rehash is commonly accepted now? I remember getting roasted for daring to say that a month or so after the movie was released.

“I cannot say enough about how Bog Iger and Alan Horn have understood this thing that is now part of the Disney company,” Abrams added. “And they’re not trying to Disney-fy it, they’re not doing anything other than, I think, an incredibly smart thing, which is letting Kathleen Kennedy — who is a remarkable person and producer — run and lead Lucasfilm to a place where I think it wants to go.”
