Windows 8 / RT |OT|

Yes of course, I'm just making it all up. Never mind.
Yeah, I'm literally saying that you're either making up the "sluggish performance" and "battery issues" and "mousepad problems", or they're all in your head.

As for the the rest of your "problems", like I said a 30 second lightweight install of any one of dozens of different little programs would completely remove metro, hotspots, boot to desktop, and bring back the start menu.

https://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu
http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/download.asp
http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/files/latest/download

And when I say it literally takes 30 seconds, it's not a hyperbolic statement unlike some that you've made about Windows 8.

But hey, at the end of the day if going back to Windows 7 removed all those performance and battery issues that were completely invented by your mind then more power to you.

A friend of mine is asking all sorts of questions regarding Windows 8 but as I'm not running it, I can't really answer him :p He wants to upgrade to Windows 8, Microsoft has that fancy upgrade site where you can get it at a favourable price after running the "Upgrade assistant". The upgrade version he's buying, is that a full fledged Windows 8 he can install on even clean machines or is that an upgrade only that requires some sort of Windows 7 verification? Never really messed around with upgrades.

The cheap Windows 8 upgrade offer (which ends in February) upgrades an existing Windows license (XP, Vista, 7) to a Windows 8 license. For a new Windows license he'd have to get the system builder version, which is more expensive. Having upgraded a license it's however possible to do a clean install of Windows 8 (without having to first install the older version).

Okay, so does that turn his Windows 7 Ultimate key into a permanent Windows 8 key or is it purely a verification?

I guess I will be keeping Windows 8. The indexer issue is somehow resolved. It no longer restarts indexing every time I boot the PC.

I'm just trying out Windows 8 for the first time. I'm trying to install the Oblivion GOTY edition off of a DVD and it won't open the Oblivion Launcher, or the Setup program. I've played with the compatibility settings and that isn't working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd post a screencap, but I don't even know how to do that.:p

I still haven't found any good pc monitoring stuff, I want a live tile that shows the storage left on my drives and a battery life live tile.

Tile a file is cool, downloaded. I'd downloaded ProductKeys some time ago, but then just decided to keep my product keys in a OneNote notebook as I'd already been doing that.

There is actually no current key involved in the $15 upgrade offer, just fill out the form and it should email you a promo code that you then use in the upgrade assistant to make the purchase of a new license at $15. Then it lets you download a full windows ISO that you can install however you want.

I don't have the option to switch it into Windows 2000 compatibility or Windows 98SE. Maybe I just need to buy a newer printing of the game, but I'm hoping to find a workaround.

edit: Got it working. I tried everything except for Vista compatibility settings, and that was what got it going.

There are still AHCI driver issues with Windows 8 that can cause sluggish problems (long pauses w/ disk access). I have a computer that does this. You can google it if you are so inclined.

I don't see how battery life being worse in 8 than 7 is anything shocking, it is probably driver related.

These sorts of things usually eventually get fixed or get to the point they don't matter (antiquated hardware). It happened with every Windows release, no need calling anyone that disses your favorite OS a liar over issues that are possible.

The boot time with an SSD is fucking incredible. I'm at the lock screen as soon as my monitor turns on.

Also, is there a way to disable the lock screen/password entry?

Thanks.

Is there a way to boot straight into the Start screen without having to enter your password other than using a local account?

Is there any way to disable the clock and the network status on the logon screen, it screws up the GTA V logo of the beachweather wallpaper ? I'd also change registry settings and stuff like that so it doesn't have to be an official way.

Ha, I didn't think anybody would notice. I actually noticed that soon after I posted the screenshot but just couldn't be bothered to fix it and take a new screenshot. Good job I'm not submitting it any time soon.
Your mistake was underestimating my ability to notice things. Maybe next time you'll estimate me.

How did you set up? I think my times are much much worse because of some dependency on the hard drive. I think the master boot record. I think it takes me almost a full minute to get to the lock screen with the bios and OS selection screen taking up time. The logo loading part also seems to take a little longer than expected.

That seems too long, even if you have an HDD. Check the first page of http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=493301 for help with setting up an SSD.

A very small portion of consumers upgrade to the new version of Windows by purchasing Windows and upgrading their current machine. People upgrade to the next version of Windows when they purchase a new PC.

That said, I do think those prices are pretty high.

Those prices seem fairly typical. Pro was always massively expensive. I did kind of expect them to soften on the prices, not sure how this coincides with Blue.

Also, can you upgrade a 32 bit Windows install to 64 bit windows 8?

That's normal pricing for Windows. I did upgrade my daughter hand me down 4 years old laptop since I have the $15.00 promo code and I was surprise how good Windows 8 run on that old Sony Vaio (it has core 2 duo).

Running Windows 8 on a 5 year old Sony Vaio FZ with a Core 2 duo. I upgraded the RAM and HDD to an SSD. The OS flies on it.

Hopefully the next generation of Atom Processors approach Core 2 Duo performance.
