change your importing options from convert to AAC to MP3

In iTunes:
Change your import settings to MP3 in the advanced/import tab in preferences.
Select tracks you want to convert.
Select 'Convert selection to MP3' in the Advanced menu. (It'll say 'Convert selection to AAC' if you've not changed your import settings.)
Discover just how fast your machine is...

You'll end up with both an AAC and an MP3 version of each track you've converted. Enable the 'Kind' column to see the difference.

Not as good as re-ripping, but faster than trying to find all those CDs you've archived

try the above method if you want to tie up your machine for a couple days :lol
